THE CLASS OF 1969 PRESENTS THE BLACK QUILL BLACKDUCK HIGH SCHOOL BLACKDUCK, MINNESOTA Foreword The annual staff of 1968-69 is proud to present the Black Quill, a record of this year's school e- vents. Due to an early publica- tion date the Black Quill is not entirely complete, but it gives an accurate description of the school's activities of 1968-69. Fable of Contents foreword. Contents, Acknowledgement Dedication Seniors Underclassmen Administration and Faculty Music Athletics Organizations In Memoriam Advertising Acknowledgment Fcr making the publication of the 1969 Black Quill passible, we, the staff, would like to thank the administration, the faculty, and the students of Blackduck High School. Our appreciation is ex- pressed to those who supported the Black Quill through advertising. Ule would also like to thank Mr. Cooper, of Cooper's Studio in Be- midji, for his cooperation and pa- tience in the taking of our pic- tures. 2 DEDICATION We are fortunate to have Mr. Gerald Sonnek as a member of our school and community. He has strived to make us more conscientious students and better citizens through his guidance, leader- ship and determination. The class of 1969 is proud to honor him at this time. High school graduation for Mr. Sonnek came in 1959 at Wells High School in Gaston, Minnesota. Mr. Sonnek graduated from St. Thomas College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social stud- ies and physical education. He spent the following year doing graduate work in education and social studies at St. Thomas College. The Virgin Islands became the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sonnek for the 1964-1965 school year. Mr. Sonnek taught social studies and physical education while his wife had a sixth grade class. Since 1965 Mr. Sonnek has taught sen- ior high social studies at Blackduck. He was named head football coach for the Brakes in the 1966 season. During the three years that he has coached the Drakes, they have lost only two games. Under his guidance the Drakes also won the Northland Lites Conference title in 1967. Mr. Sonnek is also an advisor of the senior class. Student Council and Lettermen's Club. Members have become acquainted with various Spanish foods and customs through several Spanish suppers. Christmas caroling in Spanish has given the students a broader appreciation for the language. The Senior members (front row) worked hard this year to earn money for a trip to Mexico after graduation. A dance, a car wash, a movie, a pancake supper and a play were different activities sponsored by the Seniors. The Spanish Club is, and hopes to remain, a very active part of the high school system. 77 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: Goodwin, Claden, Larson, Rudqulst, Hanson, Gordon Row 2« Safe, Page, Osufsen, Ness, Kllde, fricketad 78 Rudquist (Sec.), Larson (Pres.), Claden (Treas.) In the summer of 1964, this year's graduating class received a shock as they heard the news of the death of a close friend and classmate, Terry Keith Dufseth, son of Nr. and Mrs. Andrew Dufseth of Blackduck. His friendliness and quick sense of humor was recognized not only by his friends, but by all those with whom he came in contact. Terry was an important part of the school and was our first representative to the Student Coun- cil, where he worked for the benefit of all. Terry was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and active in Sunday School. He is greatly missed by all that knew him, especially those who knew him well. The untimely death of Gerald Dale Melstrom, the year we were juniors, greatly shocked us all. Jerry attended Blackduck school through the tenth grade, when he and his family moved to Minn- eapolis. All who knew him realized the extent of his love of life, his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to make and keep friends. His will- ingness to help and to involve himself completely in whatever he did made him a real asset to our class. Jerry had a great interest in school activ- ities and the Trinity Lutheran Church, of which he «as a member. Jerry was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Melstrom of Blackduck. He is deeply missed by all who knew him. On the night of our Jr. — Sr. r i um, wt? were deeply saddened by the death of another classmate, Clark Lewis Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thorvald Anderson of Blackduck. Clark's active participation in class and his good sense of humor made him a valuable friend and classmate. Clark was active in football, track, and held the office of Sentinel in the local F.F.A. chapter. He received a Scholarship Award through the F.F.A. Clerk was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was active in his church youth group. All that knew him feel the loss of this true Clark Lewis Anderson friend and classmate.
