WEDDING: Marriage of the year was that of Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, of Britian. and the commoner, An- tony Armstrong-Jones. The rites of the Church of England were performed in famed Westminster Abbey, in London, while the whole world looked on by television. Those close to her say the princess is • extremely happy” and appar- ently has put from her mind her ill-starred romance with Peter Townsend. However, her husband has not yet been given a title by the queen. Washin fcon Hui downed Minnes: Gophers, 17-7. the Rose Bowl, January 2, 1 STUDENT RIOTING: In Turkey, Korea, and Japan, leftist students rioted against their governments. The demonstrations failed in Tur- key. But in Japan the situation became so tense (above) that Presi- dent Eisenhower had to cancel a visit. In Korea, the demonstrations forced the resignation of President Syngman Rhee. United States President and Vice President JOHN KENNEDY LYNDON JOHNSON DISASTER: A December fire raced through the navy’s new aircraft carrier Constellation, scheduled to be commissioned in 1961, at its out- fitting dock in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The blaze took the lives of 49 workmen and sailors, caused damage estimated at $75,000,000, and set back the carrier’s completion date by at least a year. TUMULT IN CONGO: The Congo, once a Belgian colony, emerged as a new, independent nation and plunged into a year of bloodshed and turmoil. Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Kasavubu battled for power, and the United Nations dispatched an international police force in a futile attempt to restore order. The sound and the fury of the Congo obscured the fact that other African colonies peacefully attained their independence during the year. Eichmann Due To Be Hanged If Convicted INTEGRATION: After the school board of New Orleans, obeying a federal court’s orders, enrolled four Negro girls in the first grades of two public schools, white parents boycotted the schools and screamed their objections as they gathered in crowds on the streets. In other southern cities, the integration struggle took a quieter turn as Negroes staged sit-in demonstrations at store lunch counters to force abolition of segregated eating places.

This page is dedicated to the teenagers of Blackduck High. In years to come we will want to look back to the fads and fashions of our high school years, this page will be our memory token of our teenage life. We all love music. It is not just a fad. but a part of our life. Not everyone has the same music interest ofcourse, but we all share that love for music and dance, whether it is rock'n roll, western, slow, or classical. The girls' wardrobes varied from pointed toe and squash heeled shoes, sheath dresses bulky sweaters, pleated skirts, and knee ticklers, to sweatshirts, tennis shoes, leotards, and three or four braclets on the wrist. The boys' wardrobes included bulky knit sweaters, fruitboats, and slacks. Moss green and gold were the most popular colors. Our favorite menu consisted of potato chips, chip dip, ham- burgers, pizza, french fries, and pepsi. pastimes were playing cards, out door sports, reading, and collecting stuffed animals.

The jet fell in a populous section of Brook- lyn, setting fire to a church and tenements. Its wreckage is shown here. The other plane crashed in a field on Staten Island. He’d Talk Trouble Brewing Specialist Secretary of Agriculture ORVILLE L. FREEMAN SPY TRIAL: A military court in Moscow sent Fran- cis Gary Powers (right, above) to prison after a U-2 reconnaissance plane he was piloting was downed in Russia. The United States admitted it had been using U-2 planes to make secret flights over Russian territory to pinpoint missile bases and other military installations from which an attack might be launched on the Free World. FEARSOME WEAPON: The United States created and put into operation its most fearsome weapon— the nuclear-powered submarine George Washington, carrying 16 Polaris missiles it can fire even while submerged. The submarine went on patrol—on all the oceans of the world—with unstoppable power to unleash awful destruction on the homeland of any country that would dare to attack the United States.
