THE CLASS OF 19G0 PRESENTS THE BLACK QUILL BLACKDUCK HIGH SCHOOL BLACKDUCK, MINNESOTA DEDICATION To show our appreciation for his willingness to help us in any worthwhile thing we strive to do; for his integrity and dependability in helping train students to become better citizens; to one who has been in our school since 19 1, except for time out for military service; to one of our science and math teachers, our golf coach and the instructor in driver education; we, the Senior Class of I960, wish to dedicate our Black Quill to Mr. Lloyd Cox. «3KS1RS •v. ;v.‘V r kv ’v' • 55 vvi:N Sgi i«- «% V V ' V_ i 1 i 1 11 n, x V ' V - rfriiii fcM V ' ‘m , i v. a SsSSr. ■ . ■ v-fe % , , j jr, V-Ai? todurn.'Ji • . •• irrv’r tfflBr ' • ‘ Kw) KEITH H. Sue Cross and Eldon Leino were our Homecoming candidates and Sue was crowned Queen. Following that, Paula Tischler was crowned Carnival Prin- cess. In our sophomore year, Marie Lossing gained another royalty for us when she received the Homecoming Crown. Jim Hentges was the King candi- date. Sharon Waring represented us in the Carnival Queen contest. Last year, our Junior year, held much for us. Jean Cox and Dan Wild were our Homecoming candidates. Our Carnival Queen candidate was Carol Quam. We gave our Junior Class Play, The Beauty and the Beef , on Nov- ember 5 1958. We attended County Day in Bemidji on May 5, 1959 The Prom, annually given by the junior class, was a great success on May 9. Sue Cross and Duane Wolden represented us at Girls' and Boys' State, respect- ively, in June. Our rings were received September 24, 1959. They had been on order since February 11. We had our class pictures taken September 24 and re- ceived them November 12, 1959« October, 1959, presented us with another royalty----Carnival Queen Marie Lossing. Paula Tischler and Dean Juelson vied for the Homecoming titles. We ordered our announcements on October 20, 1959, and they will be here in the spring in time for the Baccalaureate service which is scheduled for May 22, i960, with Graduation following on May 24. Our class was greatly saddened when Dan Wild was stricken with polio. He took treatments until Christmas and by then was too far behind to gradu- ate with us. Mrs. Kaltenbach has taken over all of the tasks formerly done by the health teachers, and she has started many new projects and records. —- CUSTODIANS Austreng, Leonard Floura, Klug, Jones COOKS ROMANCE : Romance of the year was tne marriage of Ste- ven Rockefeller, son of New York state’s millionaire gov- ernor, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and Miss Anne Marie Ras- mussen, a student from Sogne. Norway, who worked as a maid in the Rockefeller home while going to college in New York City. STRIKE: Industry was para- lyzed as 500,000 steel workers went on strike, and when con- tract negotiations deadlocked, the courts sent the strikers back to their jobs under an 80- day Taft-Hartley law injunc- tion. Workers grumbled at the drastic action but, like these men, happily received their first pay checks in four months. They may strike again Jan. 26, when the Taft-Hartley injunction will expire. NIXON VISITS RUSSIA: Vice President Richard M. Nixon opened a United States industrial exhibit in Moscow and then went on a tour of the country. At the U. S. exhibit Nixon and Khrushchev dramatically debated the American and Russian ways of life while cameras and recorders caught the scene for viewing in America. Some communists “needled” Mr. Nixon, but on the whole his reception was friendly. CUBAN HERO: Bearded Fidel Castro won victory in his long revolution against the regime of Dictator Fulgencio Batista, of Cuba, but he found victory soured by mounting domestic difficulties. In time, there were even moves for a counter- revolution, and Castro alien- ated the goodwill of the Unit- ed States with dictatorial policies. But it' was obvious that the majority of the Cuban people still support Castro. TWO NEW STATES: Alaska became the 49th and Hawaii the 50th state of the Union, and happy celebrations were held in Hono- lulu, left, and in Juneau, right, to mark the occasion. They were the first new states in 47 years. A 49th star for Alaska was added to the American Flag in July. A 50th star, to represent the state of Hawaii, will be added next July 4. PRESIDENT TOURS: Bearing messages of good- will from the United States, President Eisen- hower traveled 20,000 miles and visited 11 coun- tries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He received roaring welcomes, especially in.India, where this i?flrlnnu of flowers was placed around his neck. PREMIER VISITS: Premier Nikita S. Khrush- chev, of Russia, came to the United States for a tour, seeing America for the first time and giving Americans their first view of their arch enemy in the cold war. Khrushchev saw much, including corn grown on the Garst farm in Iowa. 1959 IN PICTURES THE EIGHTH SEA: The seven seas of the world became eight in number when the St. Lawrence Seaway, linking the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes, was opened to traffic. Queen Eliza- beth II, of Britain, and President Eisenhower presided over dedi- cation ceremonies for the $430,000,000 seaway and the $600,000,000 power project that is part of it. The first vessel through the sea- way was the British royal yacht Brittania, shown here in transit Iran Prepares for Shah’s ‘Lucky’ Marriaae Mondav of the St. Catherine Lock during the dedication ceremony.
