WELCOME TO B.U.! DEDICATION Mr. Ruby Wray This year, the yearbook staff is proud to dedicate the 1986-1987 Beaver Tales to Mr. Ruby Wray. Mr. Wray has served as head of the Business Administration Department for nine years and recently as advisor to the yearbook. Mr. Wray has gained the respect and ad- miration of his students through his constant dem- onstration of professional- ism and hard work. Mr. Wray sets high standards and inspires his students to meet these standards. His dedication to his students is evident by the hours he keeps to make himself avail- able and the thoroughness of the attention he gives in helping his students regis- ter. Mr. Wray has touched us in many ways and will not be forgotten. “Mr. Wray is what dedication is all about; he puts forth the time and effort to help students succeed in life. There is never a moment when he is not there for you. Highlights this year include, ‘We Can Make You Laugh,” a ventriloquist, a hypnotist, and many more. BOSA also organizes many of the weekend dances including homecoming, Valentines dance, and the pajama party. The Board has sponsored several events with Work Com- mittee including The Battle of the Departments. This year’s president is Lisa LeJack and the faculty advisor is Hal Haynes. Although it got off to a rough start, many people pitched in to make it a big success. This year’s book tried to capture some of people’s most memorable moments as the yearbook is what people refer to 20 years from now to see what Blackburn was like. This year’s editors were Lisa Scheffel and Mary Koehne. Mr. Wray was the faculty advisor. Anyone who wants to can help with the preparation of the yearbook. YEARBOOK 15 ALPHA CHI This year’s Alpha Chi members were inducted into the Blackburn chapter during a beautiful candlelight ceremony this spring. Dr. Kirsch gave an inspiring lecture on the benefits of studying abroad. Following the induction there was a reception at Dr. and Mrs. Denman’s home. Students are selected for Alpha Chi due to demonstrated excellence in academics. Each year the faculty nominates students for this distinction based upon leadership, scholarship, and participation in college activities. The student’s names are then published in a national book. Missing: Chris Galardi Student Senate is a very important part of the social life at Blackburn even though they are not often seen. Their main responsi- bilities include allocating funds to all social groups and organizations on campus, discussing and recommending policy changes concerning social regulations, and serving on various boards on campus representing the views of the students. This year’s presi- dent was Rick Schott and the faculty advisor was Dr. Sam Meredith. There are five at-large reps elected each spring plus arepresen- tative from each dorm and the commuters, usually elected in the fall. 18 Class Officers are those students elected by their peers to represent their class. Not only is there a president, vice-president, and __ secretary treasurer but many classes have reps from each dorm on campus. Each class coun- cil works to raise money for their classes but also to perform charitable deeds for the Blackburn and Car- linville Communities. This year the Junior class col- lected canned foods to dis- tribute to the needy over the holiday season. The Class of 1990 organized one of the most successful Talent Shows ever. The Senior Class Officers are making plans on what to do with the money that they have raised over the years. Elections are usual- ly held in the fall and are or- ganized through the Stu- dent Activities Office. Noreen is elected Queen!! 22 BARNEY BEAVER MAKES HIS GRAND APPEARANCE 24 20 CHOIR The Blackburn Choir Singers, lead by Dr. Hatlestad, have been providing the Blackburn campus with many outstanding musical performances. Not only do they have a Christmas con- cert in the Fall but other concerts throughout the year. The high- light of the year is the Spring Break concert tour where they travel and perform. This year the group went to the Chicago area and to parts of Indiana. Choir is aclass and you do receive academic credit for it. To join you must audition. Under the guidance of Dr. Earl Sherburne the two groups have devel- oped quite a reputation in the area for their excellence. Larry, Curly, and Moe PIE THROW To help raise money for the work awards dis- tributed each year at the Honors Banquet, the Work Committee sponsored its annual Pie Throw. Many students turned out to help support Work Committee and have alaugh. Most of the Advisors, Work Committee members, and selected students took a pie in the the face. All in all, over $250.00 was raised!! 34 YGEEGN AIRMEN F OF NOTE PHONATHON 36 | BLACK A 1 TALENT SHOW BURNIAN COURT This year’s Talent Show, sponsored by the Freshmen Class, was the best in a long time. Many of the acts were of a musical nature al- though there were several ‘‘comical”’ skits. Em- ceeing the event was senior Bill Yancey. Judges for the talent show were Jim Rawlins, student; Mrs. Nancy Denman, the President's wife; and Mrs. Joyce Emmons, a Carlinville resident. To add to the festive mood, door prizes were hand- ed out between acts. Most of the door prizes were donated by local merchants and stores. The judges had a hard time selecting the winners but they finally chose: 1st place, Mary Ann Taylor and Ike Turner for their singing duet; 2nd place, Wan Han Teoh, Cindy North, and Chris Zollers for their comic musical sketch; and 3rd place, Andrew Chee for his renditions of classical gui- tar music. After the trophies were awarded the Bur- nian Court was announced. This year’s court consisted of: Mary Koehne and Ed Keane, Sus- an Kramer and Steve Doria, Lisa Moore and Brian Poust, and Val Small and Bill Yancey. The King and Queen selected by the student body were Susan Kramer and Steve Doria. Congratu- lations to everyone on this special honor! 38 39 MADRIGAL DINNER 1986 Hear ye, hear ye! This year’s Madrigal Dinner was a BIG success. The Madrigal Dinner has become a tradition at Blackburn and each Christmas the Madrigal singers entertain the friends and students of Blackburn. The dining hall is transformed into a mideval hall with coat-of-arms, jugglers, and trumpets blowing. This year’s Madrigal singers were Mark Darling, Daphne Marrable, Jim Rawlins, Dottie Strode, Jose Castillo, Kendra Hodgson, Mike Bartimus, Chris Zollers, Dan Williams, Dana Shanholtzer, Ike Turner, Harriet Engle, John Oster, K.T. Lambert, and Scott Darling. The Madrigal singers were lead by Dr. Roger Hatlestad. Besides singing traditional madrigal songs, the singers performed many traditional Christmas carols. “This dinner will be one of my favorite memories of B.U.; | had a lot of fun with all my friends,” said junior Lorie McChrystal. 40 42 44 . This department includes those jobs that deal directly with the academic areas of the campus. Jobs in this area include assistants secretaries to the faculty, as well as workers in the Learning Cen- _ ter, Writing Center, Language Lab, and the Library. Jobs in- clude athletic trainers, _ life- guards, janitorial workers, cleri- cal staff and intramural coordi- nators. It was formed in order to provide for more complete ser- vices in the Center, thereby al- lowing for more campus and community use of the sports fa- cilities. This year’s manager is Cleo Whisenton. ATHLETICS 55 STUDENT CENTER The Student Center (commonly called the Den) is the social cen- ter of the campus and is used by students, staff, and faculty. Den workers serve food and drinks from a snack bar, Supervise the game facilities and are responsible for the general upkeep of the area. This | year’s manager was Kathy Dishon. . Job assignments may include carpentry, utilities work, painting, grounds work, coordination of the mainte- nance facilities, and other general maintenance work. Heiens. o7 JANITORIAL SERVICES Kitchen Maintenance is one of the more fun depart- ments to work in. This department is responsible for the cleanliness of all dishes, pots pans, and the dining hall ma- chines. The general cleanliness of the Allison Dining Hall facilities is also a major task of ““K.M.” They also clean and maintain all of the food service equipment. The ‘‘K.M.”’ manager of this year was Daniel Gregor and his depart- ment’s advisor was Mike Canamare. 58 One of the bigger departments on campus this year was Janitorial Services. This department is responsible for cleaning the residence halls, including hallways, stairwells, parlors and bathrooms. It is also responsible for cleaning all academic buildings, including classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms. There is a special janitorial crew which is responsible for chang- ing light bulbs, washing windows, and caring for floors and car- pets in public areas. This year’s manager was Jan Petee and the department’s advisor was Randy Ober. KITCH This department supplies the campus with three meals a day, seven days a week, with the student workers preparing all of the food. Jobs include working in the salad room, bakery or grill areas. Students also work on the serving line, as cash- Pe iers, trotters and as salad bar attendants. After meals, everyone : . oes works together to clean the kitchen area and prepare for the ot AN next meal to be served. There is also a catering crew for ban- quets and other special events. This year’s manager was Debbie Witt and her advisor was Mike Canamare. N Zs _ s | : aay 59 WORK OFFICE uwtversiT? The Work Office is the headquarters of the Work Program. This is where all timecards are processed, records kept, and the General Work Managers Office is here. The Work Of- fice usually has three to two secretaries that perform many of the clerical duties of the G.M.s and the dept. managers. The General Managers this year were Diana Damelio and Brian Poust. The advisors to the Work Office and the Work Program were Pete Slavish and || Roger Fenton. Each worker is responsible for a specific area within the store. Workers order, stock, and clean their area. They also work as cashiers and sort mail. Work Committee is the eleven member administrative body of the Work Program, which has complete responsibility for work activities. This year’s Work Committee has been busy with the running of their departments plus the entire Work Pro- gram. They sponsored such events as the Battle of the Depart- ments, a dance, Campus Clean Up Day, and much more. Work Committee members are selected each spring by the old Work Committee.
