DEDICATION We would like to dedicate the 1982-1983 edition of the Blackburn College Beaver Tales to Lydia Forbes for all her years of devoted service to the Blackburn College Community. We all know what a tremendous force Mrs. Forbes is in the library where she has officially served as librarian since 1965. She specializes in reference material, archives, and audio-visual circulation. But as we all know if we have any questions about where to find something Mrs. Forbes can usually quickly give us an answer. In the twenty years before Mrs. Forbes was Officially hired by the college she served as the unofficial faculty director of the theatre department. Mrs. Forbes was the moving force behind the theatre from 1950-4970, during which time she directed almost 90 productions. These shows included Oedious Rex, Taming of the Shrew, Candide Rhinoceros, Waltz of the Toreadors, No Exit, Matchmaker, and The Philadelphia Story. Even after the Theatre department was begun as a formal discipline Mrs. Forbes continued to direct. Her last production was Le Bourgeous Gentillehomme in 1979. Thank you Mrs. Forbes for your quiet but strong influence on all of us. pe ox 3 Cc Ww) 2 Ae] 2 je} O sso | TOTES 1 Bescon Wee ee CAs fa Ss 6 Candids 3 me] c je] O 8 Candids a) re ha, Candids 9 VVGRwwisew ew eer Funny Farm 10 Candids oneness (Ave Ae tains COE Bi, % q eiep Oe ec to ig, a MO Ce ee ay ae Candids 14 42 Candids Sti aot aa WY RSee..- ok 44 Candids een Candids 15 46 Candids ne x me ] c S , F ; vi einstein Ws ai rie Lkimaud sah ¥ £ “ue dace ee get eon eae 5 ce RR 2 enw . ; 3 3 SA gh ae Z Somer ie t ‘ GRIT TE : sc eeasetibeyergeaeeee STE ES AG Lhe ease ™ ST teh dency Sy NG pp) ah annie i z £ k Beto oo oh RHA does it all for you, B.U. students! 48 Dom Lite basic counseling techniques (i.e. effective listening skills, etc.). Dr. Denman has shown great concern toward the students and the college. He formed a Planning Committee that helped to outline the purpose and goals for the college. He has expanded student representation on committees that once consisted of administration and faculty only. He has instituted six new sports into our athletic program. Dr. Denman would be a fine example for promoting physical fitness. He’s frequently seen jogging around campus and he wrestles with the students during the wrestling season. The President’s Inauguration was held on February 13, 1983 in Bothwell. This ceremony Officially installed fj) Dr. William Denman as President of the College. His §) wife, Nancy and 2 of their 3 children attended. President's Message - To a Senior from a Freshman You are envied - you have had an unusual opportunity to attend a first-rate college where people taught with their hearts. You are loved - this is a small place where | hope you have found a genuine sense of family and rewarding relationships. Dr. Mark Armstrong received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Michigan State University, while Dr. Jeanne Thomas, a newcomer to the Psychology Department, received her doctorate from West Virginia University. Several faculty members have reported outside activities in which they are involved. The University of California at Berkeley has accepted Dr. Steven Leibo’s book entitled A French Advisor to Imperial China: The Dilemna of Prosper Giquel for publication. Dr. Jim Schiffer and his wife, Susan, completed a novel entitled Borrowed Robes and are currently seeking a publisher for it. Dr. and Mrs. Schiffer presented excerpts from the novel in a Faculty Forum presentation. Dr. Schiffer describes their novel as an ‘academic mystery novel,’’ and he revealed that murders occurring in the novel are committed in a Shakespearian fashion. Dr. Richard Walker also sought a publisher for his 600 page manuscript entitled A Hierarchy of Love, a five-year project which he feels reflects his interest in both the stages and the quality of life, while it also serves as a critique of culture. An Ohio journal, Occasional Papers in Muskingum Valley Archeology, devoted an entire volume to three of Dr. Walker's papers about Shawnee Indians of the eighteenth century. Dr. Dilbagh Singh spent the fall semester of 1982 in India on sabbatical leave. In the four and one-half months he spent in India, he visited four universities. He attended and gave seminars concerning the problems of American and Indian education, and also spoke with many educators and scholars who are delving into the future of the liberal arts. Dr. Singh was also elected to the Physiology section of the editorial board of the Botanical Society of America. Mr. Sid Rawlins soent much of his time preparing for a two-year sabbatical and leave of absence in order to enter the Peace Corps. He will be doing work in Ecuador, South America. The Speech and Theatre Department entered the academic year with a completely new faculty line-up. Dr. Robert Wilcox and Dr. Kristen Marshall aspired to expand department options to include internships in forensics, debate, broadcasting and cable television. Their experimentation in ““education- al theatre’ led to mainstage productions of Much Ado About Nothing, The Miracle Worker, The School for Wives, and Guys and Dolls. These productions provided an exceptional challenge for theatre students with work assignments in the theatre department, as they worked long hours fo polish acting techniques in rehearsal and worked astound- ing overtime hours in set construction while still keeping up with their academic work. Some departments reported new special-topic course offerings. Dr. Roland Zimany introduced a special-topic course on Self-Identity, a highly specific philosophic question. The Philosophy and Religion Department offered two other new course offerings: ‘Judaism, Christianity and Islam,’ and “The Philosophy — of Science.” Dr. Jeanne Thomas suggested a new course offering for the 1983-1984 school year dealing with industrial and organizational psychology. The Physical Education Department has planned | extensive expansion for the 1983-1984 school year. The introduction of six new collegiate sports to | Blackburn has been instituted to involve more current students in athletics, as well as to draw more prospective Blackburn students.
