History — a record of words; of deeds; and of actions. The Class of 1971 will soon become a part of the history of Black River High School. Our words, and our work, are recorded in this book — to become a brief section of the past, as we move out into the world to assume our role in the future. May some highlight of your life in this past year have been caught and recorded in the 1971 Echo. Editors, Lou Ann Pomeroy Terry Stroup A man who was an educator, a coun- selor, and most important a friend. Donald Larabee was all of these things to the Class of 1971. An important part of all our young lives; we dedicate our annual to his memory. Mr. Donald E. Wow that the events of the past weeks are over, there are e few things that I would like to ex- press to you at the beginning of this school year. As you know, both Mergie and Dad were very close to this school. I be- lieve that as this year is about to start that they would want you to continue with the many dreems hhat they had for this school. Many people have said that Dad's name was synonomous with Black River. There ere many things that remain as memories of whal my father did and was trying to do for this school. The scholarship fund in both Nergie and Dad's name is one way of preserving what they both wanted for this school. The memories of some little thing that Dad said to you or sone- thing that he has done to help you with a problem, are ell tributes to him, as a teecher, administrator, and perhaps above ell, as a friend to ali of you. There are perhaps many dreems that Dad had that may never be reslized; but there are many, many more that can be cccomplished with your and your parents help. He wanted great things for this school, as do most of you sitting here todry. Now it is up to you to see that some of these dreams come ‘true this year and in the yeers to come. There is no list of these dreams to be shecked off one by one; only the things that ecch one of you went to accomplish this yeer end in the years to :ome, I would like to issue to you a challenge, that I think Dad has issued to many other assemblies such as this. That is, that you strive to do your best in not only your school work, but everything that you set out to do this yeer. Try to make this one of the greetest years that Bleck River High School has ever seen. I would also ask that you stop everyonce in a while end remember that my fether is welking there right beside you throughout whatever venture that you may stert; helping you to make it a tremendous svzcess. Our family would like et this time to express our thanks to you and to your parents for all the prayers end the thoughtfulness that has been extended to us. We reelly appreciete 211 that has been done. As you go through life retain your old friendship and develop new ones. Remember, to gain a friend you must be one! A very famous poet once stated his philosophy of life as “let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” | I can truly say this philosophy prevails among the young people and adults of Black River District and I thank you for being my “friends.” Mr. Smith, Superintendent ) What is the most rewarding part of your job? J.P. South, Principal The most rewarding part of my job is two- fold. Working with the dedicated members of the faculty whose first concern is the welfare of the students, is one thing that is rewarding. Working with the young leaders of our school is the other part of the job which is rewarding. The young people, who are the real leaders of our school, who work diligently, who think of others, who try to do what is right, who are truly interested in getting an education, keep alive my faith in the young people of America in general, and the young people of the Black River School District in particular. a at RALPH O. Ziebro Anabela Andreu was our exchange student for the 1970-71 school year. She ca me to us from Guatemala and soon became part of our lives. We all miss her and will always remember her happy smile. Jim Stroup, Ana, Terry Stroup ‘““OHIO”’ I Love You My life in Ohio is going to be the yesterday that I’ll never want to forget. The snow, the cold, the rain and the sun. All those beautiful days of happiness, they will never leave me. My life with my family, Mom and Dad, Jim and Terry, my lovely home. They were part of my sunny days, they make me happy, they make me always smile. Black River, friends and teachers; every day they help me, every day they give their friendship. Basketball games; when we won and when we lost. Every day is in my heart. Ohio, you will be part of my yesterday, and I am going to take you always with me. Mr. South and Ana GUY B. I want my boy to have all the advantages I can give him UCH as having to earn his own allowance by running errands, S cutting lawns. Such as getting good grades in school — getting them because he wants to, and because he knows what it would do to me if he didn’t. Such as being proud to be clean and neat and decent. Such as standing up and standing proud when his country’s flag goes by. Such as addressing elder friends of his parents as “sir” and ‘‘ma’am”’. Such as having to earn his own way in the world and knowing he has to prepare for it by hard work, hard study, and sacrificing some of the pleasures and ease his friends may get from too- indulgent parents. These are the advantages I want my son to have, because these are the things which will make him self-respecting and self-reliant and successful. And that is the happiness I want him to have.
