With your neverending knowledge, support, and spirit you gave us incentive to try harder and do our best. Aside from teaching, your involvement in extracurricular activities has brought us new experiences; experiences that will enhance our abilities in areas of society we are introduced with. We were given the sense of responsibility and achievement through your confidence and motivation. You've guided us with your outgoing personality in every special way to our development. It's been a great privilege to us to have you, the 1987-88 Vermont teacher of the year, as our senior advisor, teacher, coach, and friend. As we walk through the doors of Black River High School, we walk into our future and we thank you for giving us the tools for success. With our deepest appreciation and gratitude, we proudly dedicate the 1988 Banner to you. 4 nilil • ( HjL SENIORS W'i 'o v :i Kelly Adams “He that wrongs his friends, wrongs himself more, and ever hears about, a silent court of justice in his breast, himself the judge and the jury, the prisoner at the bar, ever condemned. This winter field trip had been planned since early September 1987, and was paid for by the students through an assessment of weekly dues. The dues paid for their overnight ac- commodations. The students brought original artwork, and projects for dis- play. Of particular note were two sketch- es, one by Craig Goodman of an ancient Spartan warrior, and the other by Tonya Leach of the Trojan Princess Cassandra. The reason that Bowdoin was chosen was because of its outstanding private collection of ancicnce Greek and Romana artifacts housed in the Walker Art Museum. The students toured through the Walker Art Museum, the Pcary-McMillan Arctic Museum, and the Bowdoin Campus. After seeing the exhibits at the Walker museum, the stu- dents realized the wealth of knowledge bequeathed to Western Civilization by the ancient Greeks. The displays are stunning and range from Black-figure panel amphora by the Painter of Berlin 1686, Attic to such works as the Red- figure column kratcr, related to the school of Polygnotos, Attic; the White ground lekythos from the school of the Achilles Painter, Attic to the Rcd-figurc lekythos by the Bowdoin painter, Attic; these examples date from between 550 B.C. to 420 B.C. over 2400 years ago. The Classical Association is now in its third year, and is growing. This year Monica Emmons was elected President; and Tonya Leach was elected Secrc- tary Treasurer. The Classical Associa- tion attended the March 23, 1988, Latin Day at U.V.M. for the second consec- utive year. Association members for 1987-88 were: Tonya Leach, Monica Emmons, Jack Koponen, Penny Wu, Craig Goodman, and Rich NicolofT. The fall production, a comedy by William Davidson called “Brother Goose,” provided an evening full of sparkling dialogue, laughter, and even some serious moments. Our local theatregoers had the op- portunity of seeing the living, breathing characters of Samuel L. We hosted two Home Tournaments; Oct. 17, 1987 in which we placed third overall; and January 16, 1988. Black River’s Team took more than its share of Trophies during the eight State Cham- pionship Tournaments and state championship Final, the latter at Lyndon State College on April 2, 1987. You might very well ask yourself what exactly is Forensics? Is it something from that t.v. serial “Quincy?” Well that is not the case. Forensics has been around since circa 500 b.c. It is the formal term for public speaking. Argumentative Address, and Debate. Forensics categories are very structured and ONLY THE HARDY survive. This year Black River High School was accepted into the National Forensics League, and elected its first slate of new officers on January 11th, 1988. The team was led by Senior co-captains Penny Wu and Kelly Van Guilder — both were selected to the All League Team and All-State Team. Both represent B.R. in the annual Lions Cup game this summer. The girls selected Kelly as the team’s MVP, while freshman Mary Libuda was picked as the most Improved. Senior Sandi Brown was given a special Coach- es Award for her 4 years of hard work — She was also picked to the All-League team. Another Senior, Melissa Gerry, playing in her first year was a big help to the team this year. Two other Seniorson the team — Kelly Adams and Tonya Leach — both injured in car accidents, could not play in their final year but acted as the team’s Managers. This group of Seniors, in their 4 years of the team, have contributed to an overall record of 45-14-6 and 2 State Championships. I’m sure they will also be very proud of this in the coming years. Good Job Guys! CRICKET as explained to a foreign visitor You have two sides one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in goes out and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When both sides have been in and out including the not outs THAT’S THE END OF THE GAME HOWZAT! 78 Chakarida Nukookit Chakarida “Ai” Nukookit is the daughter of Somchart and Supinya Nukookit and has one sister named Am. She was bom on Jan. 21, 1970 in Bangkok, Thailand. Ai likes the freedom, skiing, and the crazy people in the U.S., but misses her friends and family, the food, and the boys back in Thailand. Her class load includes Advanced Math, English, typing, anatomy, U.S. History, physics, and Computer Literacy. After Ai graduates she plans on going to college to study Computer Science. During her stay in the states she is living with Bob and Marianne Fletcher. The idea that teenagers are alike all over the world becomes evident when Ai stated, “This school is fun when I go to the games, but sometimes in class, it’s boring.” Carlos Sanchez Carlos Sanchez, the son of Carlos and Alberta Sanchez, was bom on Nov. 27, 1969 in Madrid, Spain. He has no brothers and only one sister, Bejo Na, who was also a foreign exchange student. Carlos likes to play tennis, basketball, and soccer. He has also learned how to ski this winter. Of skiing he has only one thing to say, “It’s awesome!” He misses his friends in Spain, the buses in Spain, and especially “the bars.” A few of the classes Carlos attends are Calculus, chemistry, English, and Computer Literacy — his “relaxing class.” Carlos enjoys many things but most of all he says, “I love girls and planes!” Carlos is currently staying in the home of Ken and Janet Gerry. Peter Oleski Peter Oleski, bom on November 9, 1969 in Hamburg of the Federal Republic of Germany, is the son of Klaus and Sybille Oleski. Peter is staying at the home of Greg and Karen Trimboli during his stay in the U.S. A couple of the things that he enjoys here in Ludlow are “having it easy in school,” and being able to watch 39 T.V. stations. Although he likes it here, Peter still misses his friends in Germany, being able to drink, and his “stuff at home.” Besides taking classes in calculus, U.S. history, English and Physics, he also takes Advanced Computing which he calls his favorite class. Peter says, “My favorite teacher is Mr. Sullivan, because he is so well organized.” He also says that he likes to watch American football, and when asked “Why?”, he just said, “It’s crazy! Just Crazy!!” Katja Rissanen Katja Rissanen was bom on Sept. 29, 1970 in Turku, Finland. She is the daughter of Kalevi and Marja-Leena Rissanen and has a younger sister, Kaisa, and an older brother, Kimmo. She is living in Ludlow with her relatives Pat and Judy Pullinen. Katja likes New York and Florida, but misses her friends, family, and sauna. During basketball season she was a member of the cheerleading squad. She was asked to say something about cheer- leading, and she replied, “It was fun, kind of stupid sometimes, though.” Even though she is a senior, Katja still has two more years of school back in Finland. After she is finished with high school, she would like to attend college in the U.S. “Who’s my favorite teacher? Togetherness Flowing Together means bring together all the way Through thick and thin, our friendships were Togetherness, as we say Like the waters of the ocean We are different rivers. held completely within. As our friendships grew throughout Flowing into one mass of swirling water. Together, for a time. With different pasts and the years. Always knowing that this day would different futures. For a moment in our lives We can share: appear As we walked down the floor, we knew our tears would grow With a never ending flow. Our Talents Our Laughter Our Selves. And now we move on. As our lives grow apart, we will always have a special person in our hearts with never ending love. by Aprille Lawrence by Melissa Gerry REMEMBER WHEN Remember when we all first met We were all too naive, too many things set. Remember in sixth grade playing kick ball, out for recess Because we were older we thought we were the best. Remember all those dreams we dreamt. Too many words spoken, not enough promises kept. Remember the times at school all of us acting so cool. Remember that test we had to take Gotta go to the nurse, time to fake. Remember always sittin’ in Village, why? Nothing else to do but watch the cars go by. Remember when each of us fell in love We all were flying high ... above. Remember that smile Knew it would be around for awhile. Remember when we said forever It meant we’d always be together. Remember when things use to be like they were Answering questions, sometimes unsure. Remember when we all left school We had our reasons, although we broke a rule. Remember when yesterday was slipping into today, onto tomorrow Wishing no days of sorrow. Remember when we do say goodbye Don’t run or hide, just laugh or smile, probably even cry. 104 — Kelly VanGuilder When we look back on toda away, We will recall the love that w And when our days are throu Though we may never For when the days and years We will be back one more ... Remember Then ; long miles and memories ? knew. h — we will remember you, these classrooms again, echo in smiles and tears ne — as we remember then John Nicholls
