The Class of 1972 Presents The BANNER MR. MORRIS E. SCHMOLL Superintendent MRS. TOFFERI It all started back at the end of our Junior year. We had gone into debt after our prom. Mrs. Tofferi, using a little foresight had the class put on a very successful carnival to bring us out of the deficit. She's an extremely de- voted BANNER advisor who keeps the class moving and earning money to finance the year- book. In the classroom she has an atmosphere of knowledge that makes a person want to learn and learn well. As Student Council advisor she's had a more active and motivated group each year. We thank you Mrs. Tofferi for the hand that has guided us through our senior year, with this, wededicateour 1972 BANNERtoyou. Dedication MR. DOWNS Mr. Downs has been an inspiration to every guy that has played on a soccer field, basket- ba 11 court, or b a s e b a 11 diamond. Pansy, that's his word for lack of h us t le . There's something in his voice , his personality, that can make you build up a desire that is hard to beat. He's always concerned with our problems, even in the classroom. Thanks Mr. Downs for showing us good times, making us hustle, and for being our friend. Because of all this die senior class of 1972 dedicates their BANNER to you. Lawson, M. West Soccer Starting off the season under rookie coach Frank Butch Plimpton the Presidents were slated as clean under- dogs. But with Rick Chambers back in the nets and a group of experienced seniors and juniors the Presidents were determined to gain a tourney birth. The Prexies led off the season home against a tough Arlington team. Steve Martel did all the damage and scored early in the first half, then when Rich Chambers was injured in the fourth period Steve filled in the nets to fend off a desperate Arlington attack. Coach Plimpton got strong defense out of Marshall Clark, Rod Cole, and Kermit Upton as the Prexies posted their first upset of the season. Fired up for Wallingford the Presidents ran up an impressive 6-0 victory over the Foxes. Next traveling to Springfield to play the Cosmos the Presidents pulled out a 4-1 victory. Ron Link scored late in the first period unassisted then Pat Pullinen scored in the second period assisted by Bob Smith. Smith then scored himself on a direct kick a minute and a half later. Ron Link closed out the scoring on a pass from Pat Pullinen. Springfield scored in the fourth period on a goal Chambers and his team mates protested. As Proctor's Phantoms traveled to Ludlow it was clear that if the Presidents could upset the Phantoms they could gain a share of the M.V.L. Fighting through four hard quarters it had looked like the game was destined for overtime. Proctor had earlier lost its chance to score when they missed a penalty kick, when Rod Cole was called for a hand ball. As manager Steve Ray was counting off the final seconds, left inside Pat Pullinen maneuvered the ball by the Proctor defense, and landed a goal in the upper right hand corner of the nets. As the final seconds ticked away, Ludlow had gotten first place in the M.V.L. The Presidents then took to the road for an away game with Mt. Anthony. The Prexies were very slow after the long trip by private cars. Mike Pallotta relieved the tension by scoring in the last few minutes of the first quarter. Pat Pullinen gave the game a boost scoring with 11 seconds left in the game. Ludlow returned home and picked up their sixth win against the Bulldogs of Burr Burton. The sun was in the goalies eyes as Ron Link shot from mid field and scored. It wasn't until the third quarter that Ron Link slid a pass to Pat Pullinen who promptly slammed it in. In the fourth quarter Steve Martel started a solo drive down field and neatly passed the ball to Ron Link for the final score. Next Ludlow ran up against arch rival Green Mt. The game was very physical with Rick Chambers beings injured in the opening minutes of play. He recovered to remain in the game. Tom Gurdak nailed down the first goal with a perfect cross coming from right wing Mike Pallotta. Pat Pullinen put on the finishing touches with a penalty kick in the third quarter. The game ended with Ludlow the victor and the score 2-1. The Presidents were down at half time against Fair Haven 1-0. The team realized they needed more effort to win in the second half. They were able to continue their win streak by scoring 6 goals in the second half. . The single goals were made by John Neal, Mike Pallotta, Tom Gurdak, Pat Pullinen, and Steve Martel chipped in with two. Ron Link picked up two assists and Pat Pullinen got one. -It was in this game that occurred the loss of goalie Rick Chambers. His ankle was broken in the fourth quarter. Rod Cole, as his replacement, did a great job for the remainder of the season. The Prexies ended their regular M.V.L, season at Otter Valley. Ludlow wrapped up a perfect 9-0 M.V.L. season. They were now number 1. Three seniors put goals in, Steve Martel, Pat Pullinen, and Ron Link. Wiggles Stuart collected two assists. It was now time for the tournaments. Ludlow received a bye into the quarter finals where they met Twin- field. They played the game at Vermont Technical College. The first goal was scored by Pat Pullinen as Ron Link led him with a pass in front of the goal. Tom Gurdak made a spectacular head to John Neal for the second goal of the game. The Presidents then advanced to the semi-finals. They encountered Sacred Heart at Norwich University. Ludlow displayed some unbelievable passing and soccer finesse at this game, Steve Martel headed a ball to Mike Pallotta for the first goal. Pat Pullinen made it 2-1 at the end of the first half on a penalty kick. Lud- low was able to keep the score that way and advanced to the S-M finals and another rematch with Proctor. On the windy field of St. Mike's the S-M finals were held. The game was scoreless for 4 regular quarters of play and two five minute overtimes. It was time now for penalty kicks with Rod Cole going to the goal. Pat Pullinen, Steve Martel, and Ron Link were to do the kicking as they alternated with the Proctor players. After several trips to each goal Ludlow was victorious 7-6. The Presidents had to return to the now snow covered field the following Saturday to play Mt. Mansfield. This would determine whether the S-M champ or the I-L champ would go on to the New England's with Lud- low's first lost went the hopes of winning the New England berth. Nine seniors left the starting lineup. Fullbacks Rod Cole, Mike Moore, Kermit Upton, Marshall Clark, and goalie Rick Chambers. Showing great defense and the ability to work in tandum the defense played their last season for Ludlow. Halfbacks, John Neal and Steve Martel ended their high school careers as well. They proved to be rugged workhorses in the middle of the field of play. Insides Pat Pullinen and Ron Link wound up their season too. Their timing and finesse proved to be too strong for many an opponent. Steve Martel, Rick Chambers, and Pat Pullinen were chosen as members of the M.V.L. All-Star team. Arlington 1-0 Springfield 4-1 Wallingford 6-0 Proctor 1-0 Mt. Anthony 2-0 Burr Burton 3-0 Green Mt. 2-0 Fair Haven 6-1 Otter Valley 3-0 Twinfield 2-0 Sacred Heart 2-1 Proctor 7-6 Mt. Mansfield 0-1 lost Thank You The soccer team would like to express their thanks to various people. Thank you fellow students for your enthusiastic support at games, your participation in pep rallies, and desire to win. Thank you townspeople and area fans for your financial help, your willingness to drive long distances to games, and eager cheering. Thank you, Mr. Firkey for organizing another banquet, get- ting the necessary money, and getting the jackets in order. Thank you. Coach Plimpton and Mr. Downs for your fine coaching, enthusiasm, and drive which carried us to the top as champions. Basketball The '71 -'72 basketball season began as one of optimism. Although only 12 boys went out for the Varsity squad, five of them were returning lettermen. Under the Rookie coach Butch Plimpton it was felt BRHS would better its past three seasons records of 3-17. A change in team leadership was needed as graduation took Joe Albano, last years leading scorer and playmaker. With Steve Martel and Mar- shall Clark to fill the co-captain spot and Pat Pullinen the Main playmaker. Black River began the sea- son. Throughout the whole season Ludlow seemed to lack the scoring punch they very desperately needed. The team was never completely out of a game; they played very well against stiff opposition. The biggest letdown to the team was two losses to the Wallingford squad. Overall the MVL could al- ways expect a tough game from the Prexies. Next year should be a new type of basketball for Ludlow fans, however. Next years team should be able to improve on the 4-16 record of this year. They proved to have the power to hit wisely and field well. They have big hopes for the 1972 season. They have six letterman returning for the '72 season. Al- though no one on the team made the all-star team, both Ron Link and Joe Albano hit over 400. Pat Pullinen hit 386. Rod Cole will be returning with a 5-2 record. Coach Witalec used the right strategy in 1971, let's hope the 1972 season can be improved. 1971 BASEBALL SEASON RECORD Ludlow 8 Otter Valley 2 Ludlow 4 Green Mt. 7 Ludlow 1 Burr Burton 12 Ludlow 16 Wallingford 5 Ludlow 8 Poultney 2 Ludlow 6 Woodstock 13 Ludlow 5 Fair Haven 4 Ludlow 2 West Rutland 4 Ludlow 1 Proctor 12 Ludlow 8 Arlington 7 Ludlow vs. Poultney Tournament Ludlow - 7 Poultney - 8 Mrs. Anita Pickielnok Office Secretary Mrs. Marie DeRosia Custodians Mrs. Pam Smith Mr. Alva Belknap Mr. Don Devereux “Everything Is Beautiful” Linda Whitaker Bob Smith Queen's Court Ludlow Jr. Miss 1972 Junior Miss — Joan Lawson Runner-Up — Shelley Creaser Participants — Shelley Ann Creaser Dale Marie Ellison Judith Lauren Farrington Sandra Lee Graves Joan Marie Lawson Cheryl Lynn Martin Glenda Mae Martin Mary Louise Pratt Alexandra Robbins Candice Lee Smith Michelle Anne West Miss Congeniality — Cheryl Martin AWARDS JUDGES TEA: Joan Lawson Shelley Creaser, runner-up POISE and APPEARANCE: Joan Lawson Shelley Creaser, runner-up PHYSICAL FITNESS: Sandra Graves Michelle West, runner-up SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT: Mary Pratt Alexandra Robbins, runner-up PERFORMING ARTS: Cheryl Martin Joan Lawson, runner-up . . .
