Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1969 volume:

B.R.H.S. is companionship. Throughout our years at B.R.H.S. companionship has been with us constantly. It has developed in us a warmth, an understanding, an inseverable bond between our- selves and our classmates. Through companion- ship we developed personality, character, and in- tegrity and have gained a greater perspective on life. B.R.H.S. is people helping people. Working and cooperating with fellow classmates and teachers has been another part of our education. Through close association with others we have learned that success is a result of combined skills and in- tellects, that cooperation lightens the task. More important, the spiritual reward of helping others is great and is influential in the development of character. B.R.H.S. is school spirit. A deep interest and active participation in all school activities and functions is an outstanding quality of our stu- dents. Whether it be a sports rally or a club activity the strong support of our student body is certain. B.R.H.S. is leadership. Affording its students the opportunity of developing strong leadership qualities is an important duty of education. Strengthening their goals and learning to accept responsibility, students prepare themselves for facing the challenges of a career. B.R.H.S. is the sum total of many things; a total which equals the best in education. B.R.H.S. Is Companionship . . . Something vital, Thriving and important- is gone. But Death - Cannot destroy Memories that will always live within us. Cannot destroy the images of those Now gone. So we live on With those Memories and images. Robbing death itself, Of its ultimate desire. JAT Mr. Palmers We are pleased and honored to have had this great man as a part of our school in our Junior year. His leaving was a great loss to Black River High School. We lost not only a great teacher, but a great friend. To Mr. Palmer we dedicate our 1969 BANNER. Mrs. Tofferi: Through the years you have guided Seniors, advised them, helped them, and won their respect. We ap- preciate not only what you have done for the class of 1969, but what you have done for our school in past years. With great honor and pleasure, we dedicate our 1969 BANNER to you. Message From the Principal With the complexities of life so vivid in today's existence, it becomes necessary, as youths, to give considera- tion to a variety of outlooks in order to find one’s niche” in life. At times, it may seem quite discouraging to cope with the experiences of adults, but a dogged determination, faith in one’s ability, and a will to succeed can overcome the more difficult obstacles. Good luck to the gradutes in the class of 1969. Hj Message From the Superintendent With the increased challenge to young people in today’s world, higher levels of education has become more and more important each year. Set your educational goals as realistically high as pos- sible and then let nothing deter you from these goals. The more educated you become, the more you will begin to realize how little you really know about the world and its problems. Education is the key which makes it possible to decide what is good and worth keeping and what must be discarded to enable you to get the most out of life. Senior Address The class of 1969 is very happy to have reached its first goal in life. As we leave high school, we are ready to accept the challenge of the modern world we will now be entering. We would like to thank the parents and teachers who have helped and tolerated us throughout high school. To the class of 1970 we give the responsibilities of seniors and hope you may carry them well. Good luck! Junior Response The class of 1970, as well as the entire student body of Black River wish to extend sincere congra- tulations and deep thanks for the leadership and guidance the class of 1969 has given us. Everyone having the pleasure of growing up with you, is sure that you as individuals will not cease to produce the good will you have at Black River. Whether the coming year finds us walking the familiar halls of Black River or memorizing room numbers in Springfield, the class of 1970 graciously accepts the responsibility passed on to us by you, and we hope, that by using your example, we can suc- cessfully carry out these responsibilities. Chambers , r Class Prophecy When we walked down the aisle at B. R.H.S. on June 18.1969, we weren't sure what was ahead for us. Later, at our graduation party we vowed to meet twenty years from that night at the same place. Here it is, June 18,1989, and most everyone is together again. There's Gail Blanchard! Seems she is still in secretarial school. Guess she figures the more educa- tion. the better. (Isn’t twenty years carrying it a bit too far?) Alma Roby, her sister Louise, and Marchelle Blanchard Lamere are reminiscing over their determin- ation not to have any more children. Each of them have more than they can handle now. Here comes Professor Chambers of the University of Cavendish where he teaches a fine course in ag- riculture. Kris Brooks is happily married to her old-time sweetheart. She has been very successful in the VW business. Norm Cole is still in the farming business. He owns a whole chain of farms throughout Vermont and is president of the Vermont Dairy Association. Norm and his wife. Sue, have a beautiful ranch-style home located in the mountains of Mount Holly. James DeGregorio is Mayor of Mount Holly. We hear that he is the sole citizen. (Is that how he got elected ?) Cassanova Devereux is filing suit against his fifth wife. Guess she interfered with his dating life too much. Ray Fitzgibbons married Kris Jarvi. She is a nurse and they have four little Fitz's. Neil Dunlap did well for himself at Vermont Tech, and now has an engineering job. working for the state. Tom Dockum married Candy Farr and they reside in beautiful downtown Cavendish. Tom became a -h chef, and with Candy's experience as a hostess they were able to build themselves a beautiful lodge named Candies. Margot Ellison and Delores Strong are still talking about those wonderful recipes they learned in Home Economics. Ed Eachus is still a happy-go-lucky guy and now is the manager of the Boston Celtics. Art Gaignard never got the money to leave Ludlow. He and Doug Parker still work on the mountain as parking attendants. Patti Godfrey is the latest winner of the Indianapolis 500. Her car the SSG never lets her down. Betty Gray joined the Peace Corps and got sent to Thailand. While there she met a real cute Thai. They married and now live in Reseda, California. Sheila Hall, being the hard worker she is, not only runs a happy household with her hubby, Hap,. but also runs the Plymouth Cheese Factory. Tim Haskell became the manager of the I. G. A., has a part time job on the ski-patrol on Okemo, and a hobby as a pilot. Busy, aren't you Tim? Irene Laakso was fired from her job as secretary because she talked too much. Now she is a radio announcer for WPTR, ”1540! Karen Janowski turned her Little Red House into a lodge. Seems she spent a long time fixing it up after the last party - twenty years ago. Gary Holden is the principal of the new B. R. H. S. Would you believe that in order to get into the school you must have a crew-cut?? We don't! Wayne Komulainen has his own basketball camp for boys and his wife Kathy Stocker, may someday be known as Florence Nightingale II. Robin Hoffman went traveling abroad and was never heard from until a few minutes ago, when we received a telegram saying she was with us in thought. Ron Lyle is now the chief custodian of the new B. R.H.S. He's worked long and hard for this position and we know he is the best janitor ever. Susan Moore graduated from Castleton and has a good job at the most modern high school in the state, that being, of course, B. R. H.S. Gary MacDonald can be seen everyday riding his motorcycle up and down the streets of Ludlow. Lynn Makela has real short hair now and we hear she does a tremendous job teaching the deaf. Dave Morrill came from Vienna, Austria to visit us. He studies at the conservatory there. Frances Lombard and Shirley Strong, have a dress shop together, and they still look alike. Bernie Snow earned some fame in the Air Force as a pilot and now is a catcher for the Boston Red Sox. He has lots of fans ... John Smith sells Sno-Cats up on East Hill. He tells us that business hasn't been too prosperous as of yet. Maybe he should go back to skiing. Barry Searl has a kennel, just for German Shepherds. He's gotten bitten so many times he has for- gotten how to do his silly little laugh. Sandi Stockman married Tim, and is living happily ever after. Chris Stowell is the general manager of IBM, Inc. of Ludlow. We also heard that Chris won the 1972 Miss Ludlow! Delores Strong is still working in the Children’s Ward at Springfield Hospital. We understand she has to wear four-inch spike heels so that they can tell her from the kids! Jill Tofferi has purchased a new scout. It stands to reason since she is a scout master. Leigh Tofferi is very happy in his position as Dean of Goddard College ... much to the dismay of his poor mother. Jerry Tucker has reformed and is now the Town Manager of Ludlow. Sandy Turco and Donny Rose are happily married and she tells us that she has six little Roses. Pat Valente is the proud owner of the only restaurant in Ludlow that serves good Polish food. Allen Owens won the award for cyclist of the year. Linda Pratt was detained at The Village, and couldn't make the reunion. Nancy Perkins is the same as ever and she seems to be very happy. That seems to be true about all our class members. And so the reunion has ended. Some kids have really surprised us, but the majority of the 1969 graduating class is just the same as we thought they'd be. To the credit of the students and the school, our teams know not only how to win magnanimously, but also how to lose gra- ciously. This in itself reflects the sportsmanship of both the competitors, the students, and spectators. Sportsmanship is vitally important in our lives, for lessons learned in high school reflect in the attitudes of adults. The athletic programs at Black River give the students a chance to participate, and to foster feelings of school spirit and school pride. A good school supports its teams even though every game is not a victory. Black River has this pride and sportsmanship. This year's Forensic Club consisted of fourteen members. We attended several meets this year, all with much success. Our first meet was held in Springfield at their new high school. This was a forensic meet and there was no debating involved. We brought home four awards. They were won by Renee DeRosia for Poetry; Debbie Parker for Prose; Mike Lawson for Radio Announcing; and Penny Durand for Prose. The second meet was held at South Burlington High School. This consisted of forensics and de- bating. This time we brought home three awards: Renee DeRosia for Poetry, Dianne Chambers for Dramatic Interpretation, and Penny Durand for Prose. Curt Heikkinen, Colleen Debish, and Barry Spaulding also went along to debate. They didn't win anything, but this was their first time out and they did an excellent job. At least they tried!! Our third meet was in Otter Valley. This was strictly debating. We did very well considering pur experience in debating was practically nil. This was attended by Barry Spaulding, Debbie Parker, Colleen Debish, and Greg Kathan. They won two debates out of six and tied Springfield for third place. The Forensic Club alsp worked on three one-act plays and attended the UVM Speech Festival on March 28 and 29. 81 Librarians FIRST ROW - F. Holden, J. Davis, D. Kirkbride, L. Wheelock, K. Bixby, N. During the course of the year they have benefited many. By attending regular meetings, they are able to learn the goals and valuable qualities of a successfuf homemaker. They promote an appre- ciation of homemaking and emphasize the importance of a good home and community life. Upton 87 Junior Rhapsody Prom in the Rain Junior Miss As we bring to a close one more stage in our lives, we stand yet on the brink of another. New opportunities, new chances of advancement are ours. Through the past four years we have been in constant preparation for this moment when we should leave the security of high school and venture in into the world as an adult. Our teachers have been preparing us, testing our readiness to face new and demanding chal- lenges. Through these years we have built a strong basis of knowledge. We are faced now with build- ing upon this foundation by developing our in- tellects, broadening our scope of interests, and main- taining an inquisitive and unpredjudiced nature. Let us save through memory the many experiences of high school, the happiness, the disappointments, and let them serve as a guide through our future endeavors. Let us not forget the warmth of com- panionship we have found, but push ahead making new and meaningful friendships. We must utilize to the fullest these qualities which have been in- stilled in us: patience, cooperation, leadership and responsibility, and open mindedness. Through using the many lessons we have learned through our education as an example and striving to achieve our best in all situations, we will become capable and dedicated citizens of tomorrow. As the Banner staff of 1969, we wish to express our deepest thanks and gratitude to the numerous people whose generous support and assistance contributed to the making of this yearbook. 1969 BANNER Staff EDITOR David Morrill ASSISTANT EDITOR -------------------------------------- - Sandi Stockman BUSINESS MANAGER.................................................Kathy Stocker FEATURE STAFF------------------------------------- Irene Laakso, Norm Cole, Tom Dockum, Editor Lyn Makela, Wayne Komulainen ADVERTISING STAFF---------------------------------Neil Dunlap, Karen Janowski, Jill Tofferi, Editor Pat Valente, Linda Pratt, Frances Lombard, Art Gaignard, Leigh Tofferi - Steve Chambers, Kris Jarvi, Sue Rutledge, John Smith, Jim DeGregorio, Nancy Perkins TYPING STAFF: Sheila Hall, Karen Janowski Kris Brooks, Editor SUBSCRIPTION STAFF Betty Gray, Editor PHOTOGRAPHY STAFF------------------------------Tim Haskell, Jim DeGregorio, Susan Moore, Editor Larry Karp, Dave Morrill, Pat Godfrey SPONSORS Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Andrews Mr. Philip Avenengo Mr. David Baker Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brooks Mr. and Mrs. Justin Davis Mr. and Mrs. Allen Devereux Mr. and Mrs. H.
