Banner 1965 BLACK RIVER HIGH SCHOOL LUDLOW, VERMONT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING Dedication MRS. MABLE: We, the class of 1965, wish to dedicate the BANNER to you. Oily with your help and encouragement could we have finished successfully the work involved in putting out our yearbook. Thank you for your super- vision and a job well done! MR. METAUOUS: For unselfishly giving so much of your time, effort, and energy last year to ensure our senior year to be a prosperous one, we dedicate the BAN- NER to you, Mr. Metalious. Superintendent’s Message Dear Seniors: Has it occurred to you that you are about to become, in the true meaning of the word, pioneers? As each pioneer had a personal goal, you, too, should select certain objectives in life and then devote yourselves to their fulfillment. As did the pioneers, you, too, must select weapons. Where they used pistols and sharp-edged axes, your prime weapons will be knowledge - knowledge that has been achieved in school, knowledge that has been gained in the growing-up processes, and knowledge that will be learned as you strive to reach your goals. The pioneer had to face the brunt of danger. His dangers included travel, hunger, thirst, Indians, weather, ridicule, and physical hardship. Your dangers are challenges - challenges to avoid the destructive forces of war; challenges to each of you to face and solve problems of automation, space travel, more leisure time, greater longevity, increased population, government control, and changes in moral and spiritual values. Upon graduation from the Black River High School, you should be prepared to face the responsibility of being depended upon by all the rest of us. In this role you must not be impatient; yet be full of action. You must possess humility; yet maintain manly pride and friendship. You must accept the world you enter; yet continually strive for its improvement. The strength, energy, and resiliency of youth must be applied to achiev- ing your goals and to shaping the world in the image of your courage, faith, hopes, and beliefs. From your ranks will come the pioneers of tomorrow. These pioneers will embark upon careers and discoveries unknown to us today. They willshapethedestiny of mankind. May their goals be your goals. May you be listed in their ranks. I want to take this opportunity to wish each of you personal success. It is my hope that your goals will be achieved and that you will become modern pioneers. We are dependent upon you. Sincerely, ( k [i Alan H. Weiss Superintendent Principal’s Message One of the most important things to which a high school graduate should give attention is how to earn a living. All too soon after one's high school days are over, it becomes necessary to provide food, shelter, clothing and support for a family. The high school year should consist of planning and preparation. Statistics tell us that more young people, out of school, are not working because they have no usable skills, and the number is increasing; and no one can say how far the trend will go. Everyone is agreed that the situation has become serious and that the answer lies in more education for youth, and for a longer period of time. More funds are constantly being made available on the national, state, and local levels for those who will qualify. It becomes a most important and pertinent question to ask where you stand on this question. How are you planning to insure your economic well-being and maintain a reason- ably satisfactory employment status in life? This is a most serious question, indeed. The best answer, yet, is to continue your education. Wayne W. McNally, Principal SENIORS FIRST ROW; D. Parker, E. Sampson, M. Thomas. B. Massey, P. Woodell, J. Parker, P. West, P. Tyrrell. P. We all hope that the past four years have not been wasted and that we have all gained a good educa- tion. Now each of us must go out into the world and face all the challenges it may offer. We hope each of us will conquer the challenges that face us. We also hope each of us has chosen a career that will bring us happiness and suc- cess, Joseph Gurdak President 1965 Junior Response Members of the Class of 1965, as seniors here at Black River High School, you have acquired the basic tools with which to move out into a new and different life. With the dignity and poise of adults, you will use these tools to meet the challenges of this world and achieve success. On behalf of the class of 1966, I would like to extend our sincere wishes for your success and happiness. As you leave, we hope we can follow in your footsteps and become seniors with the grace and dignity which you have shown. After you have gone, we hope we can carry on and maintain the respect for seniors which you upheld during the past year. We wish you the best of luck in all your future en- deavors. MOTTO: The Will To Do, The Soul To Dare, The Knowledge To Succeed SONG: This World is Ours To the tune of Exodus by Ernest Gold This world is ours; We'll make this world our own. This grand and glorious world our own. Our high school days are o'er; A New world's come to us. In the hands of God we know we can succeed. Live--we'll live. We'll make our land stand high. We'll show the world we can get by. Black River in our hearts; The past years, fresh, alive. We are not afraid. We'll make ourselves stand high. This world is ours; We'll make this world our own. This grand and glorious world our own. For our four years are done. And we'll march out as one. We will face the nations in the world and try To put our land on high. Now we must leave. We'll try to use our knowledge right. You, Black River, You are the past. We returned as sophomores, full of cheer. Completely ready for another year. Junior year was busy and tough, But when we left, we knew our stuff. We passed senior year with a heavy heart. Knowing that soon we'd have to part. In 1961 we entered Black River High School with 54 boisterous freshmen. We were looking forward to learning many great facts of knowledge and to having fun. Our freshman year was highlighted by the Freshman Reception which will never be forgotten. Arthur Ziener was elec- ted president for the year with Paul Butler, Cheryl Goodrich, and Matry Hoffman serving as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. Arthur Ziener was our only student council representative. The summer passed and we returned as confident, devilish sophomores. This year, instead of being on the receiving end, we doled out--lipstick, vinegar and onion rings to the green freshmen at the reception. Our four undaunted leaders were Mike Frye, president; Kenny Tofferi, vice-president; Cheryl Goodrich, secretary; Mari Heikkinen, treasurer. Lee Ann Lannon, Rogers Baker and Mike Frye were student council representatives. Our sophomore year ended with a festive picnic. Our junior year proved to be the most difficult of our high school career, but with deter- mination we saw it through. We chose Balfour Company for our rings, and we were all very proud of them. Our main event for the year was our Junior Prom entitled Roman Holiday. Thanks to the endeavors of our class, the outcome was sensational. Our class was prodded on by the leadership of our officers: Cheryl Goodrich, president; Paula Dockum, vice-president; Dianne Billings, secretary; and Rick Hains, treasurer. Our student council representatives were Lee Ann Lannon, Cheryl Goodrich, Pat Farrar, and Marty Hoffman. We returned for our last year at Black River as intelligent, sophisticated seniors. We were well occupied with pictures, invitations, and working on the yearbook. Our officers for the last year were Joe Gurdak, president; Leo Barrows, vice-president; Donna Parker, secretary; Rogers Baker, treasurer. We were represented in the student council by Lee Ann Lannon, Joe Gurdak, Mari Heikkinen, Marty Hoffman, and Cheryl Goodrich. The year was highlighted by parties and pumpkin raids. Before we had any realization of the fact, we had very quickly completed four years at Black River High School. So it is with sad adieu that we say farewell to our classmates and teachers. Robin Crowell gets up to do some intensive studying of Socrates. 6:32 After having changed her clothes eight times, Lee Ann Lannon calculates on her slide rule that there is still time for seventy-two more changes. 7:06 Rogers Baker and Joe Beauchain come in from an all-night raid and get their hour’s sleep. 7:59 Larry Plumb helps two old ladies across the street. 8:20 Ruth Garrow fells Craig Hall with a judo chop when he accidentally knocks some books off her desk. Rory Conway wonders if she'll last until lunch. Paula Dockum offers up a little bull. During Mrs. Mable's class, Rick Hains sits on the ostrich egg he's trying to hatch. Pam Woodell takes time out of P.A.D. class to grind out a letter to the Easter Bunny. Carol Gilbert, who secretly admires Flash Gordon, in a fit of rage, fires her ray gun at Mr. Pullinen. During advanced math class, Judy Stocker and Bev Brunelle review last night's activities. Pam Tyrrell decides to spend her lunch period in silent meditation. Reggie Matz gets rolled by some seventh grader for a Hershey bar. Betsy Flanders shows off the chrome-plated, three speed sandals that she made in home economics. Edie Sampson, Lynn Thomas, and Theresa Paul decide to send in applications for the Foreign Legion. Monitors Donna Parker, Pat Farrar, and Diann Davidson run over to the grade school, to quell a demonstration by some first graders for a longer cookie and milk break. Janet Lehto and Janice Fuller come staggering out of the Guidance office with reams of questionnaires to fill out. For a science project, Simone Paradis and Betty Massey perform major surgery on John Rowe, who wakes up with three fingers and a plastic head. Joe Gurdak and Dianne Billings are ahead by two lengths of the mass exodus of students, leaving the school building. In a drag race, Walt Weber gets sucked up by the school bus. Pat West goes east. Jeff Lawrence gets a ride home from one of the women in his harem. Diane Bowers stalls her GTO. After Leo Barrows rams Mari Heikkinen into his gasoline tank, he feels that he won't have to worry about tigers for at least three weeks. Marty Hoffman goes over the blueprints for an addition to his sandbox. Paul Butler gives his mating call. Mike Frye sniffs the rose in his lapel and thinks of beautiful things. Pauline Stevens turns her electric blanket up to nine and sighs con- tentedly.’ Cherly Goodrich and Joy Parker put the finishing touches on the Banner. One could tell by the fingerprints on the stamp that this mail was different. All depravity was to be obtained from this mail. As Beverly Brunelle lodged her fingers upon the envelope, she was seized by an unknown spell. Haunted, she raced to Judy Stocker, one of decorum. And it came to pass that Judy also was engulfed by mystery. With the rage of a mighty hurricane, she tore open that letter. Behold it was one travel folder sent by one lost friend, Mari Heikkinen. In this folder was described a place of paradise. Mari was going to induce her friends back home. All eyes were fixed south in their direction, and south was the stage. All was quiet at the Inferno. Not one flame was out of hand. Diane Bowers and Dianne Billings had seen to that. They were to keep the home fires burning. King Paul Butler and Queen Robin Crowell quietly sipped their grog. Martin Hoffman spoke not a word. In fact he hadn’t since his arrival here, six long weeks ago. He was banned from society, you know, for inventing the most powerful bomb. He had used it to destroy a replica of the Empire State Building he had built with his tinker toys. He was now employed as chief bongo man. Sara.’, was disguised as Reg Matz. Satan felt Reg a most worthy character. The bongo beat fast and there before our eyes, she appeared. Rory Conway was modeling the latest in pitch forks and horns. Between each performance, one observed Diann Davidson and Edith Sampson selling suntan lotion to those who wished to tan and not burn. With the firtue of queens and the vice of vilUans, Bev and Judy stalked in. Joy Parker took their names and filled out a file card for them. Joy was the official bookkeeper to King Paul. He had hired her himself. Paul thought she looked lonely and was still wondering how she got here. Behind Joy's desk stood Man and Pamela Tyrrell. Mari wrote travel folders to help add population to Paul's marvelous kingdom. Carol Gilbert did screen tests. Pam- ela Tyrrell was first secretary to his majesty. Her assistants were Janet Lehto. Pat West, Betsy Flanders, Pauline Stevens, and Donna Parker. Looking to our extreme right, we see a complete disturbance; but it proves only to be Betty Massey explaining to Bev and Judy what they did'to get here. It was really very easy. Betty is a psychologist. All at once the great doors of the Inferno swing open. The two most egotistic, hifalutin, osentatious characters in all Plutoland enter. It was the sc arem' boys. Bev noticed they were none other than Joe Gurdak and Rick Hams. With a mighty yell for courage. Joe aimed his gun and fired. Everyone screamed, for what he shot at them was deadly. Water is what we used to call it; but now, in Pluto, it was known as boo-juice. Leo Barrows, errand boy. went racing to get Cheryl Goodrich who was the bum surgeon. Cheryl ran a clinic and her assistants were Simone Paradis. Paula Dockum, and Ruth Garrow. It seems that the boo-juice had hit Joe and Rick's arch enemy, Joe Big Cat Beauchain. Now there was a . ill scale riot to be quieted. One could see Leo racing back for Lynn Thomas s two man army. They could do their job and do it well. The other half of the army was Janice 'Ma' Fuller. After that not it took a couple of engineers to put the Inferno back in order. These mighty men were RogetsBaker and John Rowe. Meanwhile Mike Frye was called upon to re-style Rory's hair. Lee Ann Lanaon went back to teaching the ways of evil, and Craig Hall just went. One takes it for granted that he went back to join Larry Plumb ac the A. A. Club. That s short tot Amiable Animals. As night beings a cloud of darkness over the kingdom, four more souls may be seen winging or should we say living their way to Hades. They are Pamela Woodell. Pat Farrar. Theresa Paul and Jeff Lawrence. CLASSES FIRST ROW: C. Kalinen, L. Spaulding, J. Schwolow, L. Lockwood, E. Pitts, C. Cole, J. Martel, E. McOuaide, T. Ranta, P. Janowski, J. Tuomisto, SECOND ROW: D.
