Dedication It is an honor to pay tribute to one who has become such a genuine part of Black River High School. Her interest in her stu- dents and her willingness to help them have endeared her to all who have come under her influence. Because she means so much to so many, we the Senior Class dedicate this 1964 BANNER to Mrs. Roxana Tofferi. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 1964 Dear Seniors, Your yearbook should be regarded as one of life’s important milestones. Con- tained within the pages of your Banner are recorded some of the events, happenings, pictures that are representative of your secondary school experiences. In effect, your yearbook, as does a milestone, represents both the conclusion to one phase of your life and the starting of another mile along the path of life. You are about to conclude that phase of your experiences associated with the Black River High School. During the time spent here you should not only have been learning academic facts but you should also have been developing along with others, and finally learning to take your place in society as a responsible citizen. I hope that you have learned these lessons well. After graduation each of you will be starting out to reach a new milestone along the path of life. Which ever path you choose: marriage, armed services, employment, or further education, I wish you every success. Nothing in life comes easily. You will have to strive with effort to achieve the successes you desire. Striving for success requires both a goal and the continued self-discipline to achieve your goal. In wishing each of you personal success as you set out for new milestones along the path of life, I urge you to make use of that which you have learned in school, to set your goals high, and to maintain the self-discipline needed to achieve these goals. To the Class of 1964: THE FUTURE IS YOURS. Sincerely, Alan H. Weiss Superintendent litessape r7.'ro n t ie Jjrincipaf The will to success means the will to work faith- fully and joyously with other people. The lone wolf is seldom the happy or successful worker. Most people live lives that are fashioned by the busy hands of others. To keep one’s place, to do one’s share, to preserve the peace, to add a little to the world’s joy, is to help in preparing the conditions that will lead you to happiness and the respect of others. I give you the key words to a successful future. You must have fortitude and in- tegrity in your associations with people - and as in your classrooms, you must contribute, Contribute, and CON- TRIBUTE! Principal FIRST ROW: Nancy Phelan, Virginia Gurdak, Jennifer Stowell, Roxana Tofferi, Eunice DeBarge, Sheila Mable, Dora Taylor. SECOND ROW: Eugene Ouelette, Henry Kraft, Stanley Firkey, Alan Sheldon, Robert Undeen, Paul Pullinen, George Metalious, Stewart Schmidt, Wayne McNally. Senior Acfcfmss We have now completed our high school education. We. and everyone else, sincere- ly hope that these four years here have not been wasted. We hope also that they will be beneficial to us as citizens of this hustle- bustle world of ours. Each of us is aware of the challenges that lie ahead, but it is how each of us copes with these challenges that will determine his social status. Each has chosen his own career according to his own interests, and may God bless us all with success. Richard Hislop President , junior 'Response Members of the graduating class of 1964, after four short years of your life, you have completed the requirements asked of you. Now, you are about to enter a new and challenging life - a life of responsibility and goals at which to aim. During the past three years we have grown to respect and trust you. Now that you are leaving, we will continue in your footsteps. We the class of 1965, are here to ex- tend to you our final good-by. Place. banner J)oarcf Cjfass Ludlow is now a suburb of Rutland, with a population of ninety thousand. The Interstate Highway goes through the center of town and past the new Black River Union High School, one of the largest in the state. The year is 1990, and the class of 1964 is holding its reunion in the new Starlight Hotel which towers above Main street. This hotel is owned by Russell Spurr, a very successful businessman. Richard Hislop, now General Hislop of the Air Force has been in town on leave for the past few days to make arrangements for the reunion. Mike Lehtonen, owner of the Airplane Plant in Springfield, and his secretary. Barb Lamere, have cancelled several speaking engagements out on the west coast just to work with Dick on the reunion. It is now the evening of the reunion and the classmates are gathering in the huge ballroom and renewing old friendships. Dianne Hill, X-Ray Technician at the New York General Hospital is talking with Marie Harris, head nurse at Boston General Hospital. Just joining them is Cindy Tofferi, head nurse at New York General Hospital. With her is Alice Lombard, physical therapist who has discovered a new type of therapy which is completely healing in its powers. The music for the evening is being provided by none other than John Stannard, who has his own famous band which plays around the world. Joining him this evening will be Brian Davis, that famous disc jockey of WKTV, a private radio station. Taking pictures will be Bob Snarski and his assistant Jennifer Peniuk. Snarski Studios is a very successful business here in Ludlow. Bob Snarski is a well known photographer as he has ap- pointments coming in from all over the country. Jennifer, has successfully managed to combine her photographic work with her career as a language teacher here at B.R. U.S. Mike Butler has just arrived with his reporting staff which consists of Gary McGinnis, head reporter, and his two assistants, Marcia Gray and Sandra Jackson. These two girls have managed to combine marriage with their busy careers. Two late arrivals, Jeff Danjou, district manager of the First National Stores of New England, and Joe Surething, owner of IBM on the west coast, with their secretaries, Georgia Ripley and Dolores Bruso, are busy making the rounds. Two of Ludlow's prominent businessmen, Gary Laundry and Rodney Komulainen, are busy discussing their affairs. Gary is the best lawyer of the century, while Rod is president of the bank. He always was good in math and we wonder how he does with money! The Art School, run by Jo Alyce Moore and Bernie Nowak is doing a booming business. They have just added on a new wing to the building. Brian Place, Professor at Dartmouth College, is talking with Ed O'Connor, owner of Skyway Ski Trails in Colorado. It seems that they are discussing a new ski technique. Donna Tyrrell, a leading fashion illustrator, has just arrived from New York City, along with Bob Beckett and Jim Heald who have just closed a deal in Germany about buying a new automobile plant. Their chief consultant is Richard Frye who will be arriving soon direct from Los Angeles. Pete Milnes and Bil Dzialo, oil tycoons, have just arrived and are lighting their cigars with hundred dollar bills. Steve Petty, mayor, and John Kalinen, chief of police, have just joined them. Here comes Dick Davis our State Highway Commissioner. 'Prop iecy It seems that Helen Raitanen, now a fashion expert, and Kathy Brown with Barb Farquhar, who are now professional hair stylists, have just flown in from Paris. Over there, we see Jean McCarty, physical education instructor at B.R. U.S., talking with Eileen Dever, junior high English teacher. Joining them are Tom Brown and Bob McKnight, owners of the new fashionable men's clothing store in Boston. Head salesman is Roger Bates. Roger has an outstanding sales technique and we hear the business is quite successful. Dick Surething, now head of the Alcohol and Tax Division, is coming over to talk over old times with the boys, and introduces them to one of their old classmates, Dianne Fuller, who works as Dick's secretary in Washington. Here comes that famous comedienne, Charmaine Norton. Charmaine has her own televisio show which delights people the world over. Well, the banquet has started at last.
