Announcing the 1959 Banner Foreword The challenges and events of the past four years have prepared us for the future. In this Banner we have endeavored to bring you some of these events in words and pictures. If read ing it brings you joy and memories, then our purpose has been fulfilled To you, Joseph Graves, we the class of '59 dedicate this Banner. Throughout the years you have been a true friend to each of us, and a loyal supporter of our class. This Banner is only a small part of our dedication, for in each of our hearts there will always be a space dedicated to you, Grampa Joe. Dedication Message From the Principal Dear Graduates: Graduation marks the end of your formal educa- tion at Black River High School. Education does not end with graduation: you will continue to learn and grow as you go through life. The lessons learned here have only begun: each day will bring a new lesson, a new experience, and your success in life will be largely determined by how much you profit and learn from these experiences. Each of you will take a small part of this high school with you when you leave, which will remain with you forever.. .the memory of the good times you enjoyed here; of your classmates, your friends, and your teachers. May each of you know success and happiness, and enjoy life to its fullest. Message From the Superintendent With the increased challenge to young men and women in today’s world, higher levels of education become more important each year. Set your educa- tional goals realistically high and then let nothing deter you from these goals. The more educated you become, the more you will begin to realize how lit- tle you really know about the world and its intricate mechanisms. All Seniors are off in dreams. Class Prophecy Hearth became the tenth planet as a result of a blunder by a member of the class of 1959. It was the most important one ever made, because every member of the class of 1959 was affected by it. The explosion which blew a chunk of Earth right into outer space came about as a scientist was experimenting. By some strange occurance it started to move around the sun and thus the tenth planet was formed. Shall we peek through the microscope and see what is happening? The blundering scientist, none other than Tommy Johnson, is now reorganized and back at his work. Norma Smith and Bev Belknap are busily caring for patients at Hutland Hospital, and at the same time acting as chauffeurs for the other nurses. Nursing is also Laura Buck's vocation, but Joe Valente, Multimillionaire and owner of the chain of Howard Hohnson restaurants, still calls upon her to wait on tables in an emergency. He keeps busy chasing his private secretary, Betty Olney, around his desk in between letters. Huth's Hunch expanded so much that proprietress, Jean Breault, hired Sandy Kirkham as her secretary. Now Jean handles the customers and Sandy handles the finances. Hevie sales hit the top this year, and Paula Benson is happily watching the profits roll in while A1 Wilkins, her mechanic, is busily preparing the cars for sale. Being undefeated in state play, the guys have gone on to win the Marble Valley League title and the Southern Vermont Championship in thier class. Their only two losses came at the hands of Drury High of North Adams, Massachusetts. Under their handsome and dedi- cated coach Glen Thurber, the team has developed great teamwork. The Senior class also has reason to be proud of its four Senior team members and the manager, Dave Ellison. Doug, a rugged forward, Mope, the center and a good boardsman.
