The principal is an ogre who gives out an unexcused tardy. The teacher has given a test first hour and it canit be made up. Lunch is the only bright spot, but you discover that your steady has first period lunch and you have the second period. On your way to your job, somebody runs into your car, and you find you're going to have to work the night of the big ZZ Top concert. The day ends with a fight at home and you collapse into bed an hour late and a dollar shortg homework isn't finished, conflicts aren't resolved, and who really cares, anyhow? The Great Race has run amuck. The Spartan for '76 hopes to help you regain your composure and get you back on the track and running to complete your great race in style. This year-our Coun- try's 200th birthday-we're breathlessly eager to take our place in the starting blocks, adrenalin flowing, minds ready to overcome any barrier, bodies primed for victory. We hope to give you 1976 at Bixby High, a neatly wrapped, ac- curate, wonderful memory of a very special year with very special people all running a very special race called Life. So get your imaginations racing gear out, dust off your mental track shoes, and let's get it on with this race down memory lane. On your mark! There is always room for beauty: memory for the judges, but accompanying soloists and ensembles A myriad of lovely blossoms may enclose, and leading the Pride of Bixby High as it performs at foot- Bur, whatsoe'er hath been, there still must be ball halftimes. Room for another rose. -Florence Earle Coates Finally, personality is perhaps the most important Her beauty is like that of an autumn sunset. She has a radiant glow about her. But in today's race for royalty's renown, beauty is only a part of being a queen. This generation considers qualities such as scholarship, poise, charm, personality, and talent as necessary for queenship as good looks. Scholastic ability plays a major role in the life of the high school queen. The dumb blonde has given way to the brainy beauty, and poise and charm are geared to in- telligent behavior as well as cool good looks. These ad- mired characteristics practically guarantee a girl who has them the key to a future happiness because they manifest an inward competence and security and a genuine interest in others. Talent is a blessing. The contemporary queen recognizes her talent and uses it to the fullest extent . . . not only singing in competition for a crown, but leading a church youth choir or adding a good voice to the school chorus . . . not only playing the piano or twirling a baton aspect of being a queen. The girl that has a great per- sonality has collected all the other traits - poise, charm, scholarship, talent - and has transformed them into a un- ique individual who is gracious, confident, attractive, and useful to her home. school, and community. Being honored as a school queen involves hard work - selecting materials and patterns, sewing, giving up valuable time to decorate and stuff backboards, and fighting the nerves that threaten to erupt at any time if not held tightly in check. But the problems are worth it. They must be, because there is no shortage of girls who are rac- ing for the glory that is reflected in the gold of a trophy or the blush of a rose. , H ., , -M W 3 , EQ , fe 3 - A -wj' 45,93 Ea .5 ' ' ' , H , mb' ' fa, ' . Nicolo Machiavelli Organizing is as American as apple pie and flag-waving. We couldn't even get the Pilgrims off the MAYFLOWER without a group meeting and a Compact-signing. Throughout our history democracy has been the cornerstone and organiza- tion the foundation of American life. In school it is no different. The organizations we enjoy daily are set up to train us in the basics of democracy-getting along with others, moving toward a common goal, cooperating to achieve a worthwhile project, establishing an appreciation for our own and other's skills. The training we receive in school organizations lasts a lifetime, it is fun, friendships, fellowship and faith in the American way of doing things in a nutshell. Often, in fact, it is the kick at the end of the high school race that propells us op- timistically into a future filled with opportunity. Through the completing of our organizational respon- sibilities we learn respect for time-honored methods. We learn to budget time, to pace ourselves, to be responsible for our own equipment and promises. By working closely with adult spon- sors, we achieve a rare relationship and appreciation for their efforts. In short, the Race for Togetherness that makes our school organizations great makes us better, too. 4 A... . ,. . . . . . . Lx l Z ...'......L:E ........ The staff provides new and unusual articles for the student reading. They took special polls to find out what the students thought of fooseball and professional athletes. The co-editors were M. Roberts and C. Wadsworth and the staff consisted of fourteen members. 45 Working with the people on this year's yearbook staff has made my junior year rewarding and has made me feel more a part of Bixby High School. The responsibility of being editor has taught me a lot of things, including patience and endurance. There have been many times when I wondered if it was all worth it, but as I remember the times when deadlines were met and I look forward to seeing the faces of the students when they received their book I got excited and kept working at it for you. I would like to personally thank the following people for assisting the yearbook in some way or another: Mr. Sparks for the typewriter, it is great! Coach Bayles for put- ting up with us on those all too familiar picture taking days! Mr. Hood and Mrs. Lee for assisting us with the junior high! Mr. Fultz for the use of the darkroom! Mr. Ernie Dunning and Terry Cooper for valuable pictures! The entire faculty for letting us out of class to work on yearbook when we needed it most. All these things are appreciated by us, but most of all we would like to thank the student body for without you to make it, there would be no yearbook. The staff has worked diligently to stick to the course and page by page we have succeeded. We hope that each and every page is enjoyable for you, and we hope the memories celebrated in these 200 pages recall the happiest of times for you. Organizations 47 Race For Victor Wherefore seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, . . . and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. -Hebrews The athlete has geared his mind to triumph. As he runs the great race he is always striving to succeed, to be the victor, but more important, the athlete is learning to be a good sport, to take the fumbles along with the tallies. From his experience on the field, track, court, or mat he acquires a special ability to rebound from a loss, knowledge he can use later in the race that is his life. The athlete's appeal is also important. Once he was the Greek Olympic type, crowned with a laurel wreath and honored by all men. Now he has blossomed into the Fon- zie, a cool-dude type wrapped in a letter jacket and noted for his nonchalance. Although the image has changed, the athlete remains the same insideg dedicated to victory, hungry for success, and impatient to get on with the race for whatever prize is his goal. i r . nlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllillIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllnll 4 . at 0 e I Train . . . a thing of the past, once transported people from town to town. Jumping out to a 3-1 record before Christmas, the Spartan matmen placed four men in the finals of the January Jenks tourney and came in second to Dun- can with Osborn a first place finisher. Another highlight of the year for two of the starters was an opportunity to wrestle a Japanese All-Star during a guest appearance in the United States of the Oriental squad. Bruce Winsett and Randy Osborn were both decisioned by their Japanese opponents, but both found the free-style mat experience exciting. Joanna Baillie The race for personal recognition has been run throughou our nation's 200-year history by people whose vivid dream burned so brightly that they gave everything they had to ligli the torch of public approval so vital to the success of thei visions. It was run by the Pilgrims at Plymouth, by Washington' cold, hungry soldiers at Valley Forge: by Abraham Lincoln a Gettysburgg by eager Land Rushers at Oklahoma Territory' opening. The desire to win acceptance for a pet project has take America from the bottom of the sea to the top of the highes mountaing from the rigors of the training field to the Olympi gold-medal stand, from Earth to the Moon. It has caused doctors to explore the innermost regions c the body and the mindg scientists to split the atomg lawyers ti seek the truest sense of justice, and teachers to strive for bette ways to provide quality education for students. Alice Cooper The changes that have revolutionized America since 1958-1959 have resulted in Us. And who are we? We're the coolest group to come along. We don't use names--just handles like Midnight Flyer. We get into decent things--foosball and long hair. In our Great Race to get where we're going, we've learned to stand up and say what we feel. We've learned to be ourselves, Do what we want and not care what other people think. We're not out to please anyone but ourselves and to do what seems right to us. We are condemned by those before us for wanting to make a change. We're rebels in their eyes, but who's to say That when we take their places, a change for the better won't occur? Things Change Things change and it's not the same, things change. Strange how they rearrange. But things change. I'm not the same like I was before. I'm something lessg I'm something more. They are people like you, and they have feelings. They work hard at their jobs which, all too often, don't end at 21303 even weekends are spent grading papers or averaging grades. Teachers hold a bigger, more important respon- sibility than most other professionals, for they are respon- sible for training tomorrow's leaders by helping today's students find their potential and develop and refine it. America's Bicentennial year is a salute to the progress and continuance of knowledge as well as a time to recognize the political and social leaps and bounds we've made over 200 years. The torch of learning is passed from generation to generation is handed on by the dedicated in- structors who genuinely care about individual students and about collective citizenry. When a mind is lighted by lear- ning, the glow of it dims the brightest lighthouse and fur- nishes a beacon in a world too often blinded by illiteracy. The next time you want to hit a teacher for giving too much homework, a test on Friday, or more information in an hour's lecture than your brain could assimilate in three days, STOP! Remember your future is the prize waiting at the finish line of this race. Nicholas Joseph Cugnot began experiments with steam powered vehicles. Later Henry Ford became a leader in mass production. We can't seem to go fast enough. We race even with time, but time still out-distances us. Today is already the past. Tomorrow, the future, is herel What about our future? Who are the leaders of tomorrow? The answer lies in the Jr. High students of to- day. Shaping and building their lives for tomorrow, these young men and women are using only the finest construc- tion materials and designs. Their final architectural achievement may look too far out to our eyes, but the hectic future will force them into a life-style that complements their world. They are capable of designing a promising tomorrow, and these jet-age draftsrnen of today can hardly wait to draw the blueprints for a rocket-paced tomorrow. X, ss X S Sh X XS! Then finally, victory came in the final game to a class that had never quit believing that it would come. A lot of things have come hard to this groupg they have not been able to simply enter the race and know they'd be picked to win. But they have learned to excell with what they have, and they have learned the value of winning when it's been earned by hard work. Bessie Anderson The Jr. High has come along way since last year. They have been moved to a new building and they also got a new P. E. facility equipped with a trampoline and mats. They learned to do many gymnastic tricks on the mats and some of the students got a chance to show their skills dur- ing half-time at one of the basketball games. Along with the new buildings they also got many new teachers and a new assistant principal: David Hardy. Their sports season could be counted a success for the most part. They participated in basketball, wrestling, and football. The eighth grade girls only lost one game, while the seventh grade won all their football games. The wrestlers sent three to Iowa for a wrestling festival. The Jr. High has a more important role, they are preparing themselves for their future in not only High School, but in life. fi?,Y'-X ,ff-fmvx X ffm M 1 fhf , if ivy WXAV FN fx E VV 55 cf 7 -f ,:Z 4 ' -1- - J E05 'J W 4 ,ZA 2 llSNlvvua11 X I 3 -' f ' ff ,H f fx fs ,WK A k ,, The airplane, now called a. jet, has made many changes since the bi-plane.
