The Spartans had as a first year head coach, J. C. Stubbs, who came in and took the reins. Bixby met some fine com- petition and tallied a 4 and 6 record. After the 20-6 Holland Hall victory, the Spartans, even at two wins, two losses, faced no. four ranked Haskell, no. six ranked Jenks, and state semitinalist Skiatook. Although Bixby's conference was tough, the Spartans honored four all conference players: Linebacker Mark Minick, Halfback - Gary Gibson, Tight End - Bobby Morris, and Defensive Guard - Pete Kulp. Under Coach Pete Burd, the girls sailed to a record season of 21-1 at the end of the regular season. Though not too tall, the girls had excellent quickness as well as a spirited desire to play. Throughout most of the season the team was ranked in the state's top ten. Collinsville handed the girls their first defeat but six games later the Spartanettes returned the favor. Forwards Kim Henderson and Lisa Cole and guards Gail Compton and Annie McClain were named to the all- conference team. Bixby disposed of two old rivals, Jenks and Berryhill, to win the district tournament. Then the Spartanettes focused their attention on the Regional tourney. ABOVE RIGHT: Kim Henderson fights for position. BELOW LEFT: Coach Burd talks to the players during time out. BELOW RIGHT: Teresa McClain works her way down court. P' l This year the Spartans match the Spar- tanettes with a 21-1 record at the end of the regular season. Head coach Pete Burd and assis- tant Joe Sasser helped guide the team through an exciting season that saw them win the Berryhill and Bixby tourneys as well as capture the Tulsa Seven Conference title. With the regular season over, the Spartans won the district tournament trophy. The Spartans then advanced to the winner's bracket of the regional tournament. An experienced team with a lot of talent, the Spartans won most of their games by impressive margins. At the ebb of the regular season, the team was ranked third in the state and had assumed a high position in the ratings throughout the season. Bixby placed four players on the all- conference team: M. Chesbro, J. Daniels, J. Murphy, and G. Gibson. RIGHT: Pat Pryor sets up a play for Mike Chesbro. For the first time in ten years Bixby went to the big one-the state tournament-to take a shot at the coveted title. And this time it was a double-barrelled attempt, as both the Spartans and Spartanettes made the state their last stop in two great seasons. The boys ended their season 28-3 and the girls finished 27-2. Pete Burd coached both teams and his remarkable 55- 5 record was unmatched by any coach in the state. Neither team won the championship but both came very close. ,The Spartans weiie eliminated by Hennessey 62-60, a team that went on to lose the final game by one point. The girls won the first game 57-50 over Lindsay, then fell to eventual state champ Fair- view 53-48 in the semi-finals. On their way to the state tourney, the girls pocketed the district, regional, and area championships. After winning the district at Bix- by, the Spartanettes shot down Mannford 74-36 and Sperry 36-27 to take the regional at Berryhill. The girls then dumped arch-rival Collinsville 44-39 in the area meet to win a berth in the state. The boys lost to Hominy 62-60 in the regional but came back through the loser's bracket to whip Cushing and Coweta 71-59 83-60. They then destroyed Vinita, got revenge on Hominy, and finished off Collinsville 78-64 in the area at Oologah. Next year's outlook for both teams is very promising. But this was a great season-one tha1 won't soon be forgotten. LEFT: Joey Daniels fires from mid-air. BOTTOM: Kim Henderson shoots a free shot against Lindsay. TOP RIGHT: Practice makes perfect, as the band works on their half- time show. Under the direction of Don Thompson, the band had a variety of drills for their performances at foot- ball games, as well as adding a drill team to their shows. In addition to this, they had only one feature twirler instead of several, and aquired two, beautiful golden toned baritones , which improved their sound. The members of the band had more opportunities for experiences in music, since two of its members, Renee Dumas Ccellol and Mike Downing Ctrumpetl, were selected to be in the Tulsa Youth Symphony. This in itself was unique, but Mr. Thompson was deter- mined to make a go with his Music Theory class, since his idea of having a Stage Band was discarded, because of lack of interest. His hopes were fulfilled as each goal was achieved. One of these goals was to have students write their own compositions, which were performed at some of the band's concerts and to get permission for his kids to attend a dress rehearsal of the Tulsa Philharmonic-a rare privilege. WT New-ww 69 Language Arts-Basis Of Communications In addition to our regular studies of grammar and literature, our English classes were spiced with something special-ever so often. In our Senior English classes we had first-hand experience at writing mini-term papers and reading Dostoevsky's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. At the Junior level we were able to contract for a grade over the reading of THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE by Stephen Crane and enjoyed studying JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL by Richard Bach. Our Sophomore classes were busy with the reading of several novels including Silas Marner and studying a mini-course called Language: The Weapon of Words which dealt with propaganda in advertising and other media. As Freshmen we had an opportunity to go to the movie Romeo and Juliet , read several novels, and kept an open theme composition notebook. Concentrating mainly on eye contact and voice quality in the first semester of our speech classes, we made several types of presentations. Among these were a demonstration speech, a per- suasive speech, a mock radio presentation, and one telling a story or informing. Later in the second semester we had many of the same types of presentations but also worked on hand gestures and body movements to make our speeches more effective. Y ..... 7 -- --- Foreign Languages n Accomplishment Speaking a foreign language used to be one of the more accomplished feats-or so our parents have told us. J abbering away was a favorite pastime in our younger days, even if no one could understand us. Now our languages have branched out into other areas. In these new languages we reached to get a taste of different worlds, from speakers to special films from Germany, France, or Mexico. Sometimes our club activities took us to restaurants where we found ourselves in an atmosphere almost like another coun- try or we brought this into our classrooms by singing foreign Christmas carols. K wi Joys And Frustratlons Trying to follow a Sweepstakes winning yearbook with another that would come up to its standards, was a real challenge, especially since an early half of the up-and-coming staff were inexperienced, as a result of being first- year yearbook students. Business Courses Prepare Students For Office Jobs With all the different business courses offered at our school, a. new crop of future secretaries and business leaders were trained. The shorthand that at the beginning looked like bunches of squiggles and bumps became a whole new language of meaningful words, and by the end of the year we were taking down dictation at about 100 words per minute and typing up letters from our notes. In Typing I we were more concerned with learning typing for our personal use, while our Typing II classes taught us even more about interoffice memoran- dums and business letters. We learned new skills of the business world too, in our General Business classes by studying about using credit wisely, saving and investing money, types of in- surance, money management, be- ing a wise consumer and banking services. It seems that in history classes we have begun to be more aware of what is going on in the world now, as well as studying what has happened in the past. Now teachers and students have become more conscious of how past events can be directly related or com- pared to events of the world today. Also with so much going on in our own country such as Watergate, talk of impeaching the Presi- dent, getting a new Vice President and the energy crisis, we have felt a greater concern about what will happen because we are more closely associated with these incidents. Wrinkles of sadness, looks of lonliness, grins of delight- Expressions reflecting the experiences of the bearer. How can we know all their feelings? One big jumble of people- thrown together at this time in life and all contributing to THE WORLD BEYOND QF! l If Mr. Clarence Gray, superintendent of Bixby Public Schools. Mr. Gary carried out policies formulated by the board of education. Also among his many duties was the task of coordinating duties of the principals from three schools. In addition to this he took care of all financial programs and approved the hiring of per- sonnel. 'School environment has been a fine experience for me. Where in the world can you find such in- teresting people? I believe the kids of today are more intelligent than they were a few years ago-because of the communication media now available to them. You can be assured that most will pleasantly surprise us when they maturef Men 01' Decision 'Working with boys and girls, and helping them has made life worth living for me-saddest thing fac- ing me now is having to retire thinking about retire- ment and not being with boys and girls everydayf Mr. Ford assisted Mr. Sparks with the athletic program and was important as a public relations man. In addition, he had the job of keeping attendance books for Brassfield and the high school, which included about 1,300 students. Mr. Arthur Ford, the assistant superintendent. 1 , , l l I 'I feel my job is like many other jobs in that it has definite advantages and also disadvantages. I look at my position as the responsibility of making an attempt to shape people's lives. Probably the most discourag- ing thing or biggest disadvantage of my job is trying to deal with improving problems not directly involved with improving the classroom environment' As the person who carries out the overall ad- ministration of the high school, Mr. Sparks was probably one of the busiest people at the school. This job entailed developing a curriculum, taking care of discipline problems, and helping manage the athletic program. He also recommended personnel to be ap- proved by the superintendent. The high school principal, Mr. Charles Sparks. 1 'Eb K . gfff .5 Coach Marion Bayles, the assistant principal. Coach Bayles, in addition to being an assistant principal, was one of the football coaches. He had to be able to function in case of the principal's absence. His other duties included taking care of discipline problems and attendance records. 'For one thing my job is one of the biggest challenges I've ever had. It's hectic! In problems of attendance you have more contact with truancy and tardiness, and it tends to change your attitude. You have to realize that you are dealing with only a few. There's still that 90'Xw who are trying their best to get an education. This is what makes it worth while.' Tireless Efforts For New School Formulating a. policy for the whole school to be carried out un- der the direction of Mr. Gray, was one of the school boards' many functions. It was to their credit that bonds totaling 5940,- OOO were approved for the con- struction of a new high school. They also gave the freshman ITED tests and STEA tests, which helped determine the students' I.Q. Another test given to juniors was the National Merit Test. The counselors also held day to day counseling for student problems and schedule changes. Their job consisted mainly of typing, but the other small tasks the school secretaries performed were what kept the school running smoothly. 1. Mrs. Helen Fenderson- Executive Secretary 2. 'Si'mg.1ss-N,Niw,4.fs.xs,wL : Advertising .M-1-ffzr-4 ,....f,-uv gtg r'A3's5wg ' fi 4 Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Louise Monney, senior, reigned as Miss Merry Christmas over the annual Christmas Parade. Her attendants were San- dy Cobb, jr.g Kay O'Brien, soph.g and Lisa Henry, freshman. A bracelet was presented to Louise by the Chamber of Commerce. Starting at the Middle School, the parade was a colorful sight. Bands, holiday floats, horseback riders, scouts tooting Christmas carols on their kazoos, and San- ta himself, gave spectators their first real feeling that Christmas of '73 was near. The success of the parade was due largely to Dr. Rayford Smith, parade chairman and his co-chairman Jim Brown who was responsible for positions and routes of the parade. But credit must also be given to all the par- ticipants and the fine showing of people who came to watch. The students of Bixby High School and the Year- book Staff thank the merchants for sponsoring Miss Merry Christmas and for the support they give year after year to the advertising section of the yearbook.
