About the Cover Introduction he design and artistry of the lithograph cover was produced by Barb Thor- sen, a freshman at BJC. Barb was recommended for the job by Anne Hjelle, a BJC art instructor. An 18-year-old native of Bis- marck, Barb is majoring in art and plans to attend Moorhead State University to secure her degree. The Jay-Cee-An staff ex- tends appreciation to Barb for turning theme to reality. Your yearbook has taken on a new look this year. From cover to cover, the 1977 Jay-Cee-An was designed to present the school year in a fresh and exciting way. The emphasis this year is not on political issues such as coal gasification, Garrison Diversion or other non-relating items. The emphasis is on events which effected you—the student. This is a book of memories. The yearbook staff has done its best to preserve the moods, activities, fashions and functions of the school year on paper like a fly suspended in amber—a perfect specimen for future generations to view. To help provide continuity to the material, we used the prism theme throughout the book. The prism represents every aspect of BJC which divides them into seven seperate sections or colors. The yearbook staff hopes you will find this issue an accurate reflection of the school year at BJC. 2

After 33 years: President Werner retires By Robb Boyd n |9 t was 1962 and Bismarck was taking on a new look. That big hill to the north, pre- viously barren prairie, had acquired a new building. It stood stark and alone. The large panels of glass shimmered with sunlight overlooking grasslands to the east and the Missouri River Valley to the west. This was Bismarck Junior Col- lege (BJC). It, too, had a new look, evolving from the third floor of Bismarck High School, to the State Office Building on 9th and Boulevard, and, finally, set- tling into that bold building over- looking Bismarck-Mandan. Not only was the setting new, but another change had taken place—especially exciting for Ralph E. Werner. The college’s leadership was new and he was it. Dean Sydney J. Lee had passed away and the reins of authority went to Mr. Werner. It has been said leadership gravitates to the shoulders of those who can best accept it; and accept it he did—as acting dean, then as dean, and with a title change a year later as president of BJC. The job was new but Werner was familiar with the school. In 1941 he came to BJC to teach
