A new style poptop was introduced on campus. A new design in poptops was introduced on camp- us this year in response to an ecological plea. CB radios appeared in vast numbers around BJC. “Breaker 1-9 became a popular way to avoid ‘Smokey Bears, Christmas cards’ and ‘save a few green stamps’. Along with their appearance came such handles as “Muskrat”, “Laughing Policeman , “Buttermonkey , “Dirty Bird”, and “Jack-in-the- box . Broken flag pole observatory The new observatory is perched atop the Main Building. The flag was flown on another flagpole until the main one could be repaired. BJC experienced a loss and a gain this year. The loss of the flagpole was due to a gradual deteriora- tion of splices. Joint efforts between the Lineman’s and Welding schools should have it fixed by spring. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Ad- ministration (NOAA) donated an observatory to BJC in September. It will be put to use as soon as a floor and telescope are installed sometime during the summer session. BJC acquired this observatory as a gift from NOAA.
