WILSON CLARA VAN MIDDLESWORTH MIKE WICKSTROM GREGORY CHRISTENSON 7 Psychology offers the labels for the kind of things we experience, and then helps the students apply these experiences to themselves so they can see their own behavior is within normal limits. You have to help a person look at his own behavior and recognize it. You can't dwell on the theoretical, you must talk about the practical and real. You can learn almost anything if you concentrate and apply yourself, but a course offers the organization concentration necessary to serve as a guide line for study. Basically everyone has three selves. They have their own image of themselves and every other person that they meet has an image of them, too. The per- son that they actually are is going to be somewhere in-between. It's not quite the way they think of themselves and it's not quite the way the other per- son thinks of themselves. The purpose of an en- counter group of this type is to see what picture we are putting forth for other people. We know what we feel. We try to make a meeting place so that we're able to show people who we really are. This cutting down, finding out what we look like to other people, can be damaging, if you stop right there. But the purpose is not for cutting down, it is for self reali- zation. To live in harmony with people you need to learn to understand them. The course is basically to help stu- dents understand why they behave like they do and to understand the way other people behave, and feel a better basis of communication.
