FOREWORD — The 1969-70 school year has brought us to the close of one decade and into the beginning of another. Wheth- er it marks the beginning of long years of study or the end of a two-year curriculum, this year has become part of the firm foundation onto which we will build our futures. In solitude and in active group participa- tion, we have learned from our failures and achieve- ments of this year; we look back on the good times and bad times; and we remember those who were part of this year. From our learning and through our experi- ences with the individuals with whom we have shared this year at BJC, we will continue to build concrete bridges on that foundation in order to reach the goals we have set. 6 1 8 ==£-?« 10 table of contents features 12 people 56 organizations 104 a I MV1 U.i 16 - visiting scholars discuss Cordon Smith discusses the theatre. A movie for all started the activities. The fol- lowing night was the variety show, which provid- ed such entertainment as folk singing, jokes, a dance by the idiots, the introduction of the queen candidates, a poetry reading, and various skits. The height of the evening was when Vicki Schwichtenberg was crowned 1970 Frost Festival Queen. Activities of the last three days included a concert by the Flippers, snowmobiling, tobog- ganing, get togethers in the lounge, a dance by the Jokers Wild, and the formal dance, which brought this year's frost festival to an end. 22 Queen Vicki Schwichtenberg. They did quite a bit of traveling around North Dakota, Mon- tana, Wyoming, and Minnesota. Several of their games were played on the new floor in the Civic Center. There the team also hosted the Cze- choslavikian Olympic team in December, '69. The varsity participated in the tournaments in Miles City on March third and fourth. PLAYERS: L. One doesn't have to be particularly good yet he can find acceptance and a good time. Often the student turns to intramurals because of lack of time to participate in an intercollegiate sport, due to work or class scheduling conflicts. Intramurals offered for the men are football, softball, basketball and cross country. Those sports which have gone co-ed are softball and volleyball. Micki Murray slammed one to the shortstop. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Jane Gray Smith, speech and dramatics teacher at BJC. THE CHALK GARDEN proved to be a worth-seeing experi- ence for both the audience and participants, since it was once a famous Broadway production and later was transformed into a dramatic movie with stars Deborah Kerr and Haley Mills. The story concerns an elderly lady who is in charge of the caretaking of her granddaughter. In the process of interviewing governesses, the one chosen is very care- ful not to mention her past. A highly exciting and inter- esting climax centers itself on her strange secret. The play opened November 20 and ran through November 22. Madrigal and Mrs. St. Maugham in their first confrontation. This was the second musical for the 1968 — 1969 school year. CAROUSEL is the story of a young boy and girl who meet and the typical young girl, Julie is determined to win the young man, Billy. Billy is an unstable, adoles- cent individual who cannot resist Julie's charms. They are married. Upon discovery of his approaching fatherhood, Billy feels the pressure of responsibility. He seeks his for- tune in a holdup plot with his evil friend Jiggers. The holdup is a miserable failure. Billy gets caught and stabs himself. The next scenes find Billy near heaven but he is not al- lowed to enter. His heavenly “friends want him to return to earth and do some good before admitting him. Billy returns to discover that Louise, his fifteen-year- old daughter, is snubbed because of her father's bad reputation. In his attempt to make good, Billy is al- lowed to attend Louise's graduation. There the village doctor advises the graduates not to lean on the success of their parents but to stand by themselves. Billy invisi- bly asks Louise to believe this. Forgiven by his daughter and wife, Billy is admitted to heaven. 48 What is she talking about? Everything from the joy of winning a basketball game to the frus- tration of getting stuck on the ice in the parking lot; from the satisfaction of a stimulating conver- sation in the hall between classes to the excite- ment of graduation will be remembered. However, no matter what the event or situation, the main stream of our memories will be people — the people we sat beside in class; the old friends from high school who attended BJC; the new friends from other cities; the girls you lived with in the dorm; the teacher you argued with to get that crucial extra point on an exam; the spe- cial someone with whom you spent most of your time; your very close friends and the casual ac- quaintances. All these people with whom we have shared this past year will be the basis of all our memories. We hope the 1969-70 Jay-Cee-An has captured some of these events and faces that have made this year possible. In order to help you keep these memories of life at BJC preserved, we give to you the 1970 Jay-Cee-An. 58 59 Ii The individual growth resulting from a college edu- cation does not come entirely from the classroom and the resulting credits on a student record. The many associations with fellow students and faculty provide an important factor in the growth of each student dur- ing his college years. The Jan-Cee-An will provide a fond record of this phase of your time at Bismarck Ju- nior College. 1 hope that this yearbook will become a private “time capsule” in which to look back at 1969-70. The staff of this yearbook is to be complimented for the time and effort and self-sacrifice necessary to pro- vide this historical record. Without their effort, this book would not be possible. Soloists were Joyce Saba, alto; Kay Redington, soprano; Leon- ard Crouse and George Redington, bases. Guest solo- ists were Mrs. Joan Nelson, soprano; and William Franke, tenor. An overflowing audience heard the combination of 125 BJC and BHS voices perform the Mass in Decem- ber. The vast production was organized and produced by GILBERT GERVAIS, BJC's chorale director. Jeff Geig- er directed the BHS symphony orchestra. In May,the famous Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and the Polovetzian Dance and chorus from the opera Prince Igor was performed. The opera is based on medieval romantic poetry. BJC was honored to be guest choir along with the BHS choir and symphony orchestra at a concert in Novem- ber held at the new Bismarck Civic Center. The officers are Eugene Hein, President; Steve Malsam, 1st Vice-presi- dent; Chuck Hanson, 2nd Vice-president; and Connie Dietlein, Secretary-treasurer. Many benefits can be expected from the D. P. Club as a result of the involvement of members in worthwhile projects of both a civic and educational nature. Thus far the members have punched and processed ques- tionaires for the Bismarck Youth Council, they have sold Happiness Books for the theaters of Bismarck, and they plan, organize, and process the Debate tourna- ments and their results. The club will also compute the statistics for this year's basketball team. In the following years, the club plans to sponsor a scholarship to stu- dents interested in Data Processing. To build the school spirit of the whole student body, the Pep Club made numerous posters for the campus, sold booster buttons, and held various candy and bake sales.
