Students Attend Vocational Technical Center On Campus. The Bismarck Junior College Area Technical and Voca- tional Center was established in the fall of 1967 at 1019 East Front Avenue in Bismarck. This G. I. Approved Cen- ter has been founded to fulfill the needs of area students whose interests and abilities are in the technical and voca- tional fields. The objective of the Center is to provide quali- ty training in technical and vocational education resulting in gainful employment and progressive community citizenship. Students have the opportunity to enroll in Auto Body Repair, Auto Mechanics, Air Conditioning-Heading-Re- frigeration, and Welding. The courses include instruction in Communications, Human Relations, Salesmanship, Shop Mathematics, and Record Keeping. Students are able to enroll in the courses the first Monday of each month. Upon successful completion of the training, students re- ceive a certificate indicating the areas of specialization and instruction received. Approximately 100 junior college and Manpower Development Training students arc awarded certificates each year in this continuous program of instruction. Classroom education is as important as the practical education. I'hc art of welding is one which is emphasized at the Vocational Training Center. 24 W11, LARD BINGEN H El MER Director GREGORY CHRISTENSON 11 eat i ng- Refrigerat ion MARY CLEVELAND Secretary O. Coach Meland of the Bismarck Junior College bas- ketball team found that this year his team fell short of last year’s regional championship. Mystic dropped from first to second in the Mon- Dak League. They had won the 1968 sub-regional by passing Miles City by two points but lost out on the championship this year as Wahpeton Science won by two points in the semi-finals. The team was primarily freshman team this year. They started out at the beginning of the season with five straight losses but then started to pick up as league play started. The addition of three members at the end of the season helped. BJC’s win over Bottineau Forestry enabled them to place third in the Mon-Dak Conference. Jim Glasser, formerly of Bismarck High, was the most improved player and Dale Dobriener and Bill Schmidt the leading scorers. Next season all the starters from this year are ex- pected to be back. There will be a large number of veterans back for the 1969—1970 season. Co-captains for the year are Todd Baumgartner and Ted Ware. Of Thee I Sing The Gershwin Brother’s Pulitzer Prize winning musical, “Of Thee 1 Sing, was performed by the Collegiate Players of B.J.C. October 30, 31, November 1 and 2. This satire on national polities revolved around the campaign commit- tee’s selection of John P. Wintergreen as their candidate and the single word, LOVE, as the platform. To carry out the theme, a beauty contest was held with the intent that the winner marry the candidate. However, a state of confu- sion arose when Wintergreen announced he would not marry winner Diana Devereaux but Mary Turner who made the best corn muffins in the country. International problems with France resulted, as well as possible impeach- ment of the president and the threat of the know-nothing, do-nothing Vice President succeeding him. The story opened with five poker players in Oscar Madison’s messy and sloppy apartment. These poker play- ers were from all walks of life and had a variety of personali- ties. After a series of telephone calls Oscar discovered that missing poker player Felix Ungar, the neurotic, meticulous nut, had gone out to kill himself because he and his wife had broken up. In due time downtrodden Felix arrived at Oscar s. Oscar invited Felix to live with him. All seemed well until the beginning of the second act when the poker players could barely control their tempers. Felix was a very meticulous housekeeper and kept handing out napkins, beer, sandwiches, and ashtrays. He even sprayed disinfec- tant on the cards. Felix cooked a delicious dinner for the Pigeon sisters, but it was all ruined when Oscar came home late. In the ensuing argument, Oscar tossed Felix out of the house. The comedy ended with everyone liking everyone else. “If you knew you were going to be late, why didn't you call? Why don t you come to our apartment? 92 ‘Now what did you say?” “Why can’t ho just leave?’ i 93 Guys And Dolls The Bismarck Junior College Drama and Music Depart- ments presented “Guvs and Dolls,’ a musical fable of Broadway April 23-27, 1968 under the direction of Jane Grey Smith and Francis Elliott, Nathan Detroit was the originator of the oldest established floating crap game in New York. The state was very much alive with the crap players looking for a place to play where they would not be arrested. The Salvation Army tried to reform the players; the highlight of the crusade was when the Salvation Army returned to find the crap game going on in their headquar- ters. Sergeant Sarah Brown finally fell in love with Sky Masterson, the highest gambler of them all, when she goes with him on a trip to Havana. Nathan Detroit, in addition to being hounded by the crap players for a place to play, was also nagged by his fiance of fourteen years. Miss Ade- laide. In the end, Nat agreed to marry Miss Adelaide. The club is sponsored by the local Zonta Club of Bismarck. 107 Ski Club Boots BJC The BJC Ski Club had a total of 42 paid members. The First Semester President was Dave Patience, Vice Presi- dent, Al Knoll and Secretary-Treasurer, Gladys Senger. After raising money from firewood sales, a hay-ride, sur- veys, donations, a raffle, and button sales, the ski club was ready for their ski trip. Twenty-one members and their ad- visor, Mr. Sitte, started out for their annual ski trek to the famous Red Lodge Resort in Montana, on January 22. Then they packed up and returned back to the campus of BJC for another semester. New Second Semester officers are Tom Levi, president; John Sharkey, vice-president; and Gladys Senger, Secre- tary-Treasurer. Is everyone ready for the ski lift? BJC Chorale And Orchestra Presented Bach Magnifico 128 BJC is priviledged to have one of the finest choral depart- ments that can be found in a junior college. Directed by Mr. Gilbert Gervais the chorale has performed works that are usually attempted only by large universities. During the past three years such works as Chamber Mass by Antonio Vivaldi Missa Solemnes (Nelson) by Hayden Stabat Mater by G. Rossine Messiah by Handel plus many short selected works have been performed. In fulfilling its goal to familiarize the student with and give him an appreciation for classical music, the chorale and orchestra presented the Bach Magnificat under the direction of Dr. Jean Berger - well-known composer and conductor. Dr. Berger received his Ph.D. from Heidelberg University. He has performed extensively in Europe and the Near East and has arranged musical selections for CBS and NBC. Other featured concerts by the chorale this year included the beautiful Christmas Chorale performed in Mary Col- lege Chapel and Brahm’s German Requiem. Jomrt Sunday, December 1, 3:00 P. M. Annunciation Priory Chapel presented by Collegiate Chorale directed by Gilbert Gervais Bismarck College Community Symphony directed by Francis Elliott Dr. Berger And Chorale In Rehearsal Directed by Mr. Francais Elliot, our BJC orchestra is composed of members from the college, the local high schools, and the community of Bismarck. It is nationally recognized as the only junior college orchestra in the North Central Region. Appearances this year have included the Bach Magnifi- cat with Dr. Berger and a trip by the String section to Fargo for the National Convention of Music Education of Junior Colleges. Also at this convention, BJC was well represented by Mr. Elliot and Mr. Gervais who were main panel speakers. 130 131 Mr. Elliot Directs Pep Band The pep hand, directed by Mr. Elliot, performed at BJC sports functions here, at home and also has done some trav- eling with our various teams. This group adds much to the team spirit of the student body. Bagpipe Band Adds A Scottish Aire To BJC Mr. George Anderson directs the bagpipe band which is made up of high school students who plan to attend BJC and students who are presently attending here. BJC is very proud of this group because we are the only college spon- soring a bagpipe band and this band is one of the four bag- pipe bands in the nation. The band played at some of our basketball games to help encourage our team. It has traveled to major cities in North Dakota to help promote BJC. It has performed at the Seat- tle World’s Fair, the Minneapolis Aquatennial, and the Highland Games in Canada. 133 Education Has Its Merits Bruce Peterson, Mary Busch, Linda Stubert, and Kaye Anderson are four of the BJC Scholarship winners, which consists of a waiver of tui- tion and fees. Recipients of BJC Scholarships not pictured are Barbara Murry, Patricia Hooper, and Marvin Miller. Joy Markley was winner of a $100 Business and Professional Women Scholarship.
