President, Jerry Engleman, explains to members about the forthcoming convention, while Marie Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer, takes notes. During the school year 1967-1968 BJC College Republicans have accom- plished many worthwhile projects, among them was making the necessary arrangements for the dinner and rally for Governor Romney. Thanks to the College Republicans, the situation was handled quite well. The clubs membership has greatly increased this year with hopes for many new members in the coming school year. It will be election year and this will give all a good chance to become involved in both State and National poli- tics. The annual Convention was held in Grand Forks this year. Presi- dent, Jerry Engleman, was unanimously voted in as first vice chairman for State College Republicans. The highlight of the convention was an ad- dress given by Senator Mark Andrews at the Saturday afternoon luncheon. The convention will be held in Bismarck next year because of the upcoming election year. If I were in your shoes. . . . says Lynne Marone to 10 College Republicans Don Mathews, Vice President. College Republicans, turned out to welcome Governor Romney at the airport. I I College Young Democrats Mickey Hurkes looks on with interest at a monthly meeting. Secretary-Treasurer, Patty’ Smith takes down minutes. 12 BJC College Young Democrats have had a busy schedule this year. They have helped to enhance the social activ- ityat BJC by holding several dances for the student body, as well as being a social group for all interested young Democrats on campus. The group has been entertained by several speakers this year among them was, Walter Hjelle who showed slides and gave an interesting and informative talk on his tour of Vietnam. Several members of the group periodically assist at headquarters by stuffing envelopes with vital literature to be sent to party members. Mr Dick Weber, advisor for the group, attended the National Young Democrat Convention in Miami, Florida this year. BJC Young Democrats hosted the State Col- lege Young Democrat Convention March 1st and 2nd, this year. Kathy Fox, vied for the title of Miss Young Democrat and Darrell Dorgan campaigned for State of- fice. Officers for College Young Democrats are: Bill Legen- feldcr, President; Monty Human, Vice-President; Patty Smith, Secretary-Treasurer; Darrell D o r ga n, Social Director; and Dick Weber, Advisor. Members of the College Young Democrats discuss plans for the forthcoming convention. K-Dettes 1968 Bismarck Junior College K-Dettes, a girls' service organization, is made up of about thirty girls interested in serving their col- lege and community. During the year they have sponsored dances and hayrides for the college, and they sell pop, popcorn, and candy at the Mystics' home basketball games. They support their college by sell- ing tickets for special events, particularly by selling Frost Festival buttons. K-Dettes also usher at college plays and musicals By participating in the Muscular Dystrophy and Cancer drives, the Bismarck Junior College K-Dettes serve their community. Officers for K-Dettes 1968 are (L.-R ): Linda Peterson, Nancy McDermand, June Maynard, Bridget Hill, Gail Ellwein, Ann Willmann, and Joyce Eslinger. The girls talked Tom into joining them. Linda Hanson is assisting one of the K-Dette pledges. Petey's Pigs eat more than they sell! The initiates are performing their can-can in downtown Bismarck. 15 Circle K 1968 Circle K members enjoyed collecting Marie's Parking ticket fine. With the motto Orient Toward Significance the Bismarck Junior College Circle K-Club roared into the ’67-'68 school year. This young men's orga- nization has a long history of service and activity for the college as a whole with added emphasis toward community action on a large scale. With its sponsoring organization Kiwanis Interna- tional, the Circle K-Club has always followed the axiom of civic responsibility with college service as its focal point. Service may take many forms, distributing charitable contribution containers, collecting books for Asia, ushering at civic events, running college social functions, and organizing a college parking system. Open to all college men, Circle K gives the opportunity to serve to all those who value meaningful campus activity. Members of the 1967-68 Circle K 16 The Leaders Take Over The cigar-smoking officers are (L.-R. ) Vice-President Joe Turman, President Dick Deutscher, and (Standing) Mike Mc- Cormack, advisor. Student Senate 1968 Student Senate throughout the school year 1967-1968 has accomplished much for the student body in the way of social activity, as well as having a voice in faculty committees dealing with academic areas of interest to the student. The Christmas semi-formal, Frost Festival formal and spring formal arrangements were completely taken care of by the entertainment commit- tee, and provided a memorable time for everyone. Frost Festival, the event of the year, is the largest undertaking of Senate during the year. Hard work and painstaking planning by various committees made BJC's Fourth Annual Frost Festival a suc- cess this year. Senate has also donated time and money to different charities during the year. Scholarships in the amount of one hundred dollars were awarded to worthy students. Student Senate has set up a fund for these scholar- ships to be awarded yearly. Student Senate is the student body voice at BJC. Senators-at-Large. ROW ONE, L. to R. : Jerry Engleman, Linda Peterson, Bob Waddingham, Cindy Hehn, and Rich Patch. As usual, the illustrious Ski Club of BJC made its annual trek to Red Lodge, Montana, for a four-day s o j o u rn of skiing, Ski Trail Inning and Chief Hoteling. As usual, the group re- established its repute as the IN organization at Red Lodge. The skiers successfully ascended and de- scended the Lazy-M, Grog Gulch, Silver Pine Ridge, and Rum Runs without incident or acci- dent, as usual. After establishing their rap- port with the Ski Patrol, it was obvious that there were several classes of skiers. CLASS NO. 1 - THE SKI TRAIL INNERS -- under the astute supervision of Charlie Poe, who kept a tight reign on the group by shout- ing such encouraging phrases as You'd ski a hill? and You got rhythm! His devoted fol- lowers -- Charlie Swenson, Mice (Gladys) Senger, and royal Duke Rosendahl obeyed their commandant by keeping the benches warm and the skins empty. CLASS NO. 3 - THE SUPER SKIERS (this is the ultimate class) -- with Vernie Peterson in the lead, Bev Brecht, Jerry Sholts, and Bob Wad- dingham followed his example and, with expert control, skiing down the runs, directly into the chalet to Mr. Bina (who was in a class by him- self) for refreshments before challenging the chair lift and the runs again. News, Yes, there are news! They call me barbarian! 30 Tuptim tells Anna of her love for Lun Tha. The arrival of Anna to the King's Palace. Beautiful Melodies, Lyrics Colorful Costumes Highlighted The Musical Production. Sir Edward reminds Anna that he once asked her to marry him as they talk over old times. Bismarck Junior College Collegiate Playmakers and eleven excellent vocalists from the music department successfully presented The King and I. The story centers ar ound the King of Siam, played by Jim Waechter who has brought an English schoolteacher into his oriental country to educate his people and orientate them on the western world. Anna, played by Denise Fled- derman, is delightful and exciting to the chil- dren but is to the king often contradictory and an interfering woman. Although the king resents her ideas on the people having more freedom, he realizes that western-ization of his Oriental subjects re- quires that he swallow his pride and submit to the changes which are inevitable. One of the most colorful scenes is one in which Anna sings Getting to Know You and Margie Lince, a principle dancer, performs a ballet accompanied by the Siamese children. The King and I provided excellent entertain- ment as well as an educational experience for the students. She spends the majority of her time happily rummaging through the junk piles. Without notice three crooks move in, giving up their illegal door to door sales adventures. They decide to take out a large life insurance plan for Opal with intentions of murdering her. Three attempts are make, and none succeed. Poor naive Opal mistakengly judges the crooks as her friends until the final attack upon her life. Bradford Winter gives Opal sleeping pills and begins to set the house on fire by pouring gasoline on Opal. However his plans are stopped with the entrance of the police. Opal finally realizes the dilemma but saves Brad's life from the police. She sadly gives her friends money that she has hid all over the house, and turns to say goodbye to them. The crooks re- fuse to leave and admit that everybody loves Opal. Presented By BJC Playmakers Opal receiving helpful hint from the director. The choir this year is one of the largest ever at BJC. The college purchased new gowns for the girls and tuxedos for the boys which add to the impressive show. The choir has put on several concerts this year and will again this year tour many of the smaller high schools around the state. The repertoire consists of works by the great composers Vivaldi, Bach, Rossini, Williams and many others. The choir has been fortunate to have several eloquent and talented soloists; Pat Aller, Clarice Just, Nancy Luttrell, Pam Anderson, Bill Franke and Jerry Hayes. Choir director, Gilbert Gervais skillfully directs the choir and turns out many impressive performances. The Jay-Cee-An, as it is prepared and published each year, records the events which make up the history of our college. Pictures and words provide a record for future reference and enjoyment. In the years to come, the Jay-Cee-An will become a prized possession for all students and faculty, as it relates the story of 1967-1968 at Bismarck Junior Col- lege. The year represented by this volume has seen great advancement on our campus. New buildings, greater numbers of students, additional faculty and new curriculums have provided a continuous growth of the college. These m em o r ie s will have pleasant and greater meaning as the years pass. The preparation of this volume did not just happen. It represents many hours of work and sacrifice of time on the part of the editor and her associates. They are to be congratulated on their effort in making this the finest Jay-Cee-An in the history of the college.
