Newcomers to BJC are greeted by the administration, faculty, and returning students as they take that first step across the threshold into adulthood and self-achievement. A compatible combination of dignity and friendliness in the person of Dean Werner perhaps makes the most lasting impression upon the ingenues. The recently appointed dean began his teaching career in Velva, North Dakota, after his graduation from Minot State Teachers College in 1939. Aside from his service as an Air Force Radar Technician from 1943-1946, Mr. Werner has devoted most of his adult years to education. The year 1941 found him in his first year at Bismarck, dividing his time between the high school and the college, serving as teacher, keeper of the money and assistant to the late Dean Sidney Lee. This job was interrupted by his wartime career, but he resumed his duties in 1948 as registrar and business manager. Since that time, he has added a Master of Arts in commerce from the University of North Dakota to his educational record, as well as taken additional graduate work at the University of Washington, University of Minnesota and the University of Colorado. After serving as acting dean for fifteen months, in December, 1962, Mr. Werner was selected as full dean from a field of ten candidates, thus rounding out an enviable educational career.
