Serving in your various capacities and occupations as taxpayers, members of the Board of Education, adminis- trators and faculty of the Bismarck Schools, and volunteering your time as alumni supporters of BJC, you have recognized the needs of this college and have acted quickly and effectively in solving its problems in a manner that must be commended. This dedication, then, is in the form of a tax return. Because of your sacrifices and through your payments of increased taxes to build and support this college, the advantages of a higher education are available to your children, yourselves, and others in the surrounding area. Your interest in this college has never flagged, and recently it has reached a new peak which opens even more promising vistas to the students of BJC and to the city and people of Bismarck. We consider it a privilege to dedicate this edition of the JAY-CEE-AN to you, the people of Bismarck, and to thank you with a hearty Well Done. 2 This annual has been compiled and written by the staff of the Jay-Cee-An in an effort to record the life and activities of the more than five hundred stu- dents currently attending BJC. Bismarck Junior College, the college with a future, is the theme of this year's annual. Once again enrollment hit an all-time high with the third larg- est freshman class in the state. Last year the student body moved into a new building on Schafer Heights. This year the added facilities of the adjacent Na- tional Guard Armory were made available to the college physical education department. The present seventy-acre campus affords opportunity for the expansion that future enrollments will demand. Projects in the planning stage include an all- purpose bowl and a dormitory. E. SIMLE Superintendent of Schools Bismarck Junior College is a part of the public school system administered by the Board of Education. Pictured below are members of the school board which include Harlan M. Erskine; Paul Johnson, M.D.; Omar Tweten; Warner Quale; John Cartwright, M.D., President; and Dorothy Moses, Clerk. 6 Newcomers to BJC are greeted by the administration, faculty, and returning students as they take that first step across the threshold into adulthood and self-achievement. A compatible combination of dignity and friendliness in the person of Dean Werner perhaps makes the most lasting impression upon the ingenues. The recently appointed dean began his teaching career in Velva, North Dakota, after his graduation from Minot State Teachers College in 1939. Aside from his service as an Air Force Radar Technician from 1943-1946, Mr. Werner has devoted most of his adult years to education. The year 1941 found him in his first year at Bismarck, dividing his time between the high school and the college, serving as teacher, keeper of the money and assistant to the late Dean Sidney Lee. This job was interrupted by his wartime career, but he resumed his duties in 1948 as registrar and business manager. Since that time, he has added a Master of Arts in commerce from the University of North Dakota to his educational record, as well as taken additional graduate work at the University of Washington, University of Minnesota and the University of Colorado. After serving as acting dean for fifteen months, in December, 1962, Mr. Werner was selected as full dean from a field of ten candidates, thus rounding out an enviable educational career. Because many of the students held part-time jobs and because the team had to travel long distances to play teams of their own caliber, participation encountered many handicaps. Taking these difficulties into consideration, the administration decided it would be in the best interests of the school to drop football. 53 HHi A1 Lick, Tod Johnson, Tom Woodmansee Dave Rudrud, Jay Olson 54 Bob Nudell, Otto Uhde Gary Ellwein, Student Manager The BJC Mystics, playing on a court of their own for the first time, were named the number one junior college team in North Dakota. The capable support- ing cast was likewise successful in sustaining such tension that audience and cast alike experienced the realistic terror of the situation. Joseph Hayes, the playwright, based his drama on the actual experience of an Indianapolis suburban family. It was only through the able direction of Jane Gray Smith that a junior college could so effectively produce this challenging drama. The student body will disperse with the winds in all four directions, and many of us will never see each other again. This annual is a pictorial reminder of our days at BJC. Our only hope is that we have covered this school year sufficiently to bring back to you fond memories of your years at Bismarck Junior College. At this time we wish to express our personal thanks to our faculty advisors and to the MYSTICIAN staff not only for their splendid co-operation but for their time and patience. Special mention must go to Rikki Thompson for our end sheets and to Jim Davidson for many of our Homecoming pictures; to the Bismarck Tribune and the Bismarck Capital for pictures that would have been unobtainable without their willingness to co -operate; and especially to our photographers and the members of the Annual staff who sacrificed many, many hours of their free time to work and sweat out this 1963 Jay-Cee-An, To all who have thus contributed, we once again say: Thank you very, very much.
