Text from Pages 1 - 70 of the 1961 volume:

To Curtice Murphy, who has faithfully served the students and faculty of Bismarck Junior College from 1948 to 1961, we gratefully dedicate this 1961 is- sue of the Jay-Cee-An. We shall long remember this kindly and loyal member of our secretarial staff for her unceasing efforts to promote the welfare of BJC and its students. The faculty and students wish Mrs. Murphy many years of happiness as she re- tires from her beloved duties at the College. and Machinery, and Sidney J. Lee, Dean of Bismarck Junior College since 1958, is one of the best ambas- sadors of good will for BJC besides being the moving force behind the building of the new college. Always a friend to the students, Dean Lee's office is open at all times when- ever advice on financial matters, grade difficulties, schedule planning, or any other mat- ter is needed. Dean Lee received his B. A. degree from Valley City Teachers College, his M.A. from the .University of Washington, and has done post graduate work at Harvard University. BJC's money man and Registrar, Ralph E. Werner, has held that position at BJC since 1946. Seeing to it that BJC's funds are properly handled occupies most of his time, but Mr. Werner still finds time to teach classes in budgeting and statistics. Mr. Werner received his B.A. degree from Minot State Teachers College, his M.A. degree from the University of North Dakota, and has studied at Colorado and Washington Universities. Superintendent of Bismarck Public Schools for the past eight years, T.E. Simle has charge of the general manage- ment and administration of the public school system which includes every level from kindergarten through die junior college. 4 I. E. BJC's 1960-61 Student Council officers and members may be best described as enthusiastic, original, and aggressive. It would be hard to find more efficient leaders than those who led the student body of Bismarck Junior College through the past school year. It is said that no organization is better than its leaders. We may well apply this old, but true, saying and give credit where it is due when we recognize the high level of accomplishment which the Student Council has been responsible for during the past months. Under the supervision of the Student Council, BJC saw the most colorful and effective Home- coming celebration in the history of the college. Other social events and projects also proved highly successful under the guidance of such leaders. Karlgaard Coach Running out of a Wing-T formation, BJC’s 1960 grid version pulled through a 1-4 win-loss record. Although showing in the win column only once, all of the year's contests were bitterly fought, with the opposition scoring only on sudden splurges. The gridsters, however, complied with the Homecoming festivities by winning the featured game against Hibbing, 24-13. Practice sessions were hindered throughout the season by late afternoon jobs of the players. Mohler, Martin Berger D. Geiger QB B. Gregg HB E. Johnson G R. Berger T J. Martin OB G. Page HB D. Not pictured is Judy Eckroth. Mystical Moments Homecoming, 1960, was an event of the school year that will long stand out in the mem- ories of all. In preparation for the Homecoming activities many hours were spent in building floats, campaigning for queen candidates, and making sure everything was set for the big day. Amidst a suspense which en- tranced the entire student body, the Homecoming assembly opened. Don Fischer, Student Council president, served as master of ceremonies. Climaxing the assembly was the effective ceremony of coronation. The football team co-operated by trouncing Hibbing Jun- ior College. The joyous mood extended to the finale of the Homecoming activities, the Saturday evening dance over which Queen Sue reigned . Streamers lay about, the dance floor was empty, but Homecoming, 1960, will remain in every heart. The Royal Court Left, Queen Sue waves from her official float. Dancing to the music of Sammy Ste- vens and his orchestra, 60 couples attended the 1960 spring prom. Set to the theme of Pink Rhapsody, the an- nual event, sponsored by the freshman class, featured decorations of abstract paper flowers. 1960 Thanksgiving Dance Pam Tifft and Dave Luyben enjoy a glass of punch served by Florence Walker at the annual Thanksgiving Dance, sponsored by the Press Club. Corn stalks and orange and black streamers predominated as the decorations. Christmas Formal The 5 Naturals lend their talent to the evening's fun. 1 I ftd Sponsored by the BJC Spanish Club, the an- nual Christmas Formal was held this year at the Municipal Country Club. The dance was held during Christmas vacation, thus giving the alumni an opportunity to see old friends and acquaint themselves with present college students. 36 Valentine Ball ElayneSaba, president of the K-Dettes, crowns the 1961 Sweethearts, Marlene Renz and Bruce Riedman. 37 Variety Show Inaugurated last year with tremendous success, the Collegiate Players Variety Show again proved to be one of the top activities of the 1960-61 school year. Under the co-chairmanship of Dick Geiger and Alex Feland, ■ this year’s show featured talent from the college in an evening of fun for all who attended. The show which was held on March 24 was em- ceed by Rod Tjaden. Acts featured included comedy skits, dance routines, and vocal selections, among other talent offerings. Patricia Lenihan belts out the blues. BJC's boop-boop-de-doop'' girls, Marlene DuVall and Gracie Paulsen, add a touch of the Roaring Twenties in their dance and vocal number. Laughing at emcee Rod Tjaden's jokes, are the boop-boop-de-doop girls. 38 Harvey Harvey, a three-act comedy by Mary Chase presented by the Collegiate Players under the di- rection of Jane Gray Smith, dealt with the life, loves, and adventures of Elwood P. Dowd, an al- coholic screwball; Harvey, an imaginary 6' 1 1 2 rabbit; and Elwood's equally crazy family. Presented on November 21 and 22, the play re- ceived the plaudits of all who attended the success- ful production. CAST Elwood P. Dowd............ Veta Louise Simmons.......... A mari- tal spat over trivial incidents provides hilarious action. The infidelity of a woman married to a cripple provides complications in the drama, The Fallen Bough. ” Linda Swanson depicts a woman struggling for herself as Joel Breidenbach attempts to help her in her anguish. A Step From Beyond, a melodrama of the French Rev- olution, pictures Alex Feland as he attempts to secure a mysterious letter from Jean Danroth. 40 Economics In Action Members of the economics class that took the Minneapolis trip are Row 1 - Tom Myster, Duane Miller, Mike Williams, Charles Feland, Vern Keim, Don Dimond, Wesley Johnson, Sidney Hohbein, Lester Zoller, Dick Geiger. The event, which raised money for the National Foundation, was held for the first time in the United States and North Dakota with various colleges and universities around the state taking part in the activity. Karen Anderson was chairman for the local drive which earned $65. The money was raised through candy sales, blanket throws, dances, color day, and contribu- tion canisters. Thoughts and Transits, and Freshman Class It was an eager and expectant freshman class that arrived at Bismarck Junior College, ready to begin an entirely new venture. Registration, which involved long hours of stand- ing in line and of filling out dozens of forms, launched class members off to a hectic start. Among activities given to acquaint the new freshmen with each other and the school were placement tests, a smorgasbord, and an all-college mixer dance. The regular routine of everyday college life was a welcome change after the hustle and bustle of the first few days of orientation. Throughout the whole year, the enthusiasm of this freshman class permeated every activity with a school spirit that will long be remembered. With the close of their first year at BJC, freshmen can recall with satisfaction all the new friends they have made, the good times they have had, and the knowledge they have gained. And the class can anticipate an even more rewarding final year, as sophomores, on the new college campus. It really hasn't seemed that long, mused a graduating soph- omore. Well I remember those first few frightening days. Somehow I waded through a muddle of registration blanks, class assignments, and schedule changing. I'd never learned how to study in high school, and the teachers here were giving so much work. But throughout all the frustrating experiences I guess I was becoming accustomed to col- lege life. There were other bad times, too. Those ’midnight-oil’ term papers and pop quizzes have turned into pleasant memories by now. At the time they seemed hopeless. But there are many more memories--maybe something insignificant like getting kicked out of the library for being noisy, or something important like making the semester honor roll. Each month found some classmates dropping by the way. Each month there seemed to be more to do and less time to do it in. And each month I was preparing for that last day at BJC and trying to decide if I should continue my education. The time has come now. A new adventure lies ahead! 56 Class officers - Bruce Howie, Vice-President; Joanne Worthington, Student Council Representative; Les Zoller, President; Charles Pudwill, Secretary. D.
