? ne wict This pleasant and attractive book has been written and compiled by the Jay-Cee-An editors and staff to record the events of the school year at Bismarck Junior College which have affected us all. In a warm and sympathetic manner the editors have been able to give the readers a glimpse and briefing about the freshmen and sophomores who make up our student body of nearly 500 students. Social and personal adjustments to Junior College life are emphasized. But between the lines each student will project his own adjustment to the adventure of beginning college. He will review his adjustment to the freedom of college life; the conquering of loneliness; the balancing of work and play; the making and keeping of new friends; the planning ahead for the completion of college; the develop- ment of emotional and intellectual maturity; and the discovery and realization that the time spent in college becomes vital years in preparation for a happy and worth- while life. Sidney J. Lee Hobo clowns gathered around coffee tablet King Floyd Roehrick, Queen Jan Morrison in typical background. From Rags to Riches ; King and Queen at trie Semiformal. Tired, but happy, Hobos in lounge. The parade after the parade! Homecoming at BJC is a gala affair consisting of old clothes, horseplay, a big parade, smorgasbord, homecom- ing game, a semiformal and a lot of fun for everyone. One of the big events which takes place is the conviction and pun- ishment accorded to the vio- lators of the Hobo Rules . Even the faculty joins in the hayseedy proceed- ings . Ramon Wildfang and has provided entertainment for many events within the college and commun- ity. In addition to singing for assemblies, the ensemble has performed for P. T. A. meetings, given a radio broadcast, and staged a short musical, The Familiar Stranger. ; In the group are: Sopranos: Jo McCrory, Doris Lunde, and Wilma Liebl. Altos: Carol Danrot, Marlene Dan- rot, and Mavis Myers. Tenors: Don Johnson, Jim Dunn, Judi Bersch, and Jack Laschkewitsch. Basses: Doug Ackley, Tom Haan, Bill Elliott, and Larry Seeger. The Broadway musical, The Fortune Teller, demonstrated what BJC-ans can do when they use a little elbow grease. This year, BJC mixed en- thusiasm and co-operation with tal- ent, accomplishing one of the finest musicals ever staged by the college. The cast performed to three full houses at the Bismarck Auditorium, gave one performance at the State Training School, and also journeyed to the Dickinson State Teachers Col- lege. Twice a year, the entire staff meets for dinner and a program featur- ing a speaker who has had experience in journalism. This year the Mystician staff, under the direction of Lloyd Omdahl, has established a procedure called The Bismarck Junior College News Release Service. Once a week activities are reported to the home- town papers of students who have participated actively in college affairs A similar release is submitted to the Bismarck and Mandan newspapers and to the local radio and television stations. That we have here pre- sented in the pages of this yearbook the scho- lastic aims, the student organization, the athletic achievements, the dra- matic triumphs, and the boundless enthusiasm that pervades all activi- ties at BJC is the aim of your staff. Today's Secretary is a club for students of business education. No officers are elected, but rather the activities are carried out by committees with appointed heads. The pur- pose of the club is to give the future secretaries an opportunity to gain experience in hu- man relations and in accepting responsibility. Once a month the club meets with different types of meetings, such as a supper meeting, a luncheon, speakers, etc. Each member receives a subscription to a national secretarial magazine. Not only is it larger than usual, but every member is well endowed with vocal ability. Many mem- bers show outstanding promise on the stage. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Rossi, each year the Chorus with the dramatics de- partment presents a musical comedy. This year it was The Fortune Teller with a spe- cially painted backdrop by Mansur Niufar, a foreign student from Iran. The production was such a smash hit that the chorus presented it at the Mandan State Training School and Dickinson State Teachers College. President, L. Selle; Vice- President, W. Liebl. At the beginning of this school year a new society called the Collegiate Players was included in B.J.C.'s long list of organizations. This club is open to all students, but, for the most part, is made up of those especially interested in C the theatre. During this first year members participated in the production of the musical, The Fortune Teller. The Collegiate Players also sponsored a Christmas party for all of Bismarck’s Junior High students. Mrs. Jane Gray Smith advises the group. Row 1: A. Feist, N. Renner, L. Colness, J. Bertsch, L. Grosgebauer, M. Fischer. Row 2: S. Leimbach, C. Hughes, S. Olson, P. Zachmeier, N. Flaten, L. Botton, W. The club is called upon from time to time to take part in college activities and to lend a hand in such things as selling concessions at the college musical, sponsor- ing the Christmas Formal and attending lectures on South America and the Latin- American countries. This year the club advisor, Mrs. Ruth Gannon, has planned a trip to Mexico for all members. The group has set aside three weeks for the excursion - ten days for travel and the remaining time for sight-seeing, study and enjoyment. Spanish Seated: M. Myers. Row 1: K. Ewald, L. Tomlin, W. An example of this at BJC is the Vet's Club, organized by and for the former G.I.'s. The club played a major role in the Hobo Daze activities and did a grand job of solving the parking problem and enforcing driving rules on campus with Sheriff Red Grosgebauer and his deputies handing out the parking tickets and impos- ing fines upon violators. School spirit has an outlet at our intercollegiate school events. Our Cheerleaders are attempting to stimulate this spirit and provide opportunity for its expression. The efforts of the Cheerleaders show our squads that the student body backs them all the way. Success can be and is achieved through the combined efforts of the team ana the cheering section.
