Now that we are again united in peace, it is well for us to give serious thought to the spiritual and physical values of our American way of life, and to rededicate our- selves more firmly to the preservation and per- petuation of t e principles of freedom, justice, and I iberty. Anatomy, Physiology, microbiology, pathology, and chemistry were taught by Mr. Eugene and Mr. Van Heuvelan. Other classes, such as nursing arts, nutrition, and sociology, were taught by instructors at the hospital. The three-year training course is made up of different departments, such as Dietetics, Pediatrics, and Operating Room. Sister Mary Catherine and Sister Angele are in charge of the Nursing School. Instructors are Dean Swenson, Mr. Eugene, -Mr. Van Heuvelan, and Mr. Lee. The nurses have been taking additional courses at the hospital under the direction of Miss Swenson, educational Director. The three- yea r- tra ining course is divided into departments, among which are Operating Room, X-Ray, Pediatrics, Dietetics, and several others. Miss Edna G. The first social affair was a Christmas party, to which members of the Mirai- kay Club were invited. Stag parties were held at different homes throughout the school term. 35 Of f icers, 1965-19 6- Left to right, Peggy Roherty, Mary Jane Low, Katherine Helling, Mary McCurdy, and Florence Newman. The Miraikay Club, the all-girls’ organization of B. J. C. , has been very active during the year. In the fall a picnic was held at Fort McKeen, and a dance was given on Ha 11 oween in the college lounge. Besides the annual Christ- mas party, the club gave several potluck luncheons throughout the school term. To raise money for the Markota, the girls sold coffee and doughnuts to students who needed a quick pick-me-up between classes. Miss Langemo and Miss Robinson are club advisers. The Junior College Mystics, playing their first regular season after four years of war-time inactivity, served warn- ing that next year they will be stiff competition for other North Dakota colleges. Under the guiding hand of Coach Arn- stein, and with the early-season squad being strengthened by returning veterans, the Mystics developed into a team which won seven of its eleven-game schedule. 38 Season's Record Team Mystics Hazen . 30 48 Washburn .24 36 Valley City Teachers... .56 39 Hazen .20 41 Mandan Alumni .28 30 Valley City Teachers.. . .33 46 Underwood ■ 28 48 Underwood Independents. . 44 38 Washburn • 24 32 Mandan Alumni ■ 35 31 Mandan Alumni .31 20 39 It was almost impossible to squeeze into Dean Swenson’s office January 21- Eighty Veterans registered for the second semester, bringing the total college enrollment to one hundred eighty. Many returning servicemen thought it would be hard to concentrate after several years’ absence from school. They have shown by long hours of study and conscientious effort that they appreciate the privilege of at tending school and that they are just as much in earnest about learning algebra and history and accounting as they were serving their country. B, M£LS DM No, Bill didn’t fight in any battles in Ger- many or in the South Pacific. But long ago he won a victory--a victory over handicaps that would have discouraged and defeated the ordinary person. Bill is not ordinary; he is brave and determined and cheerful. He’s our choice for a Who's Who, a Hall of Fame, or an Honor Boll. 40 At times the Chemistry Lab is a tu- multuous turmoil, with organic, quan- titative, qualitative, and freshmen students all working on different ex- periments at once. But under Mr. Van Heuvelen's excellent supervision, much has been accomplished in every phase of chemistry this year. After having made an interesting study of insects, plants, and ani- mals, and of bones and organs of the body, a student in Mr. Eugene's biology class offers this reason for the fact that the instructor ac- quired a few grey hairs this year. Early in the fall a big black Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Diptera, buzzed into the classroom and so annoyed the in- structor that he contracted his biceps brachii and threw down his right forearm with such a force as to break his hammate and capitate, making it so difficult to scratch his parietal down to the occipital, that his cerebrospinal fluid gur- gled madly about between the arach- noid and pia maters, which provoked an extreme nervous condition. Hence, the grey hairs. n 41 There are fifteen students in the second semester surveying class, ably directed by Mr. Anderson of the State Highway Com- mission. Considerable interest has been manifested in the course. Every Saturday morning the future surveyors set up their equipment--even when the rain is pouring, as it was the day this picture was taken. Algebra 103 boasts one of the largest enrollments of B.J.C. classes. Under Mr. Hook's witty instruction, the forty-five students have been busy and amused. Other large classes are American Government, Business Law, and English 101. 42 Back row: Mary Jane Low, Florence Newman, Ann Wilkinson, Mary Jane I arson, Winielou Halvorsen, Hel en Qianrud, Frances Newman.
