Yesteryear 1977 Bismarck School Bismarck, Arkansas Volume XXXII Anita Moore Editor Mrs. Wanda Hall Advisor Contents Theme .................2 Organizations..........8 Activities............20 Recognition...........56 Faculty Administration .......65 Faces.................72 Ads..................112 The 1976-77 schoolyear will be a different year. Added classes and courses, a kindergarten, new “bringers of knowledge”, and attractive landscaping has brought an atmosphere of change to B.H.S. But the student body is different. Now a greater sense of unity exists on the campus of this school. It has been noticed by many, and appreciated by more than a few. it must be admitted B.H.S. is growing up. Change is indicative of the future so we bring you . . . ... A Lotta Change In ’77! 2 One of the changes in 77 was the tradition of homecoming. The Senior Homecoming crown was changed from the less expensive type that the queen kept to a crown of much more beauty, to be permanently used for homecoming. The Junior Homecoming was held for the first time in the gym. Then after the football game, the junior royalty and players were treated to a reception. These small pictures are of new students attending B.H.S. We hope that their first year has been an enjoyable one. 3 Bruce Thornton and Ronnie Ritter wait for the rain to stop so they can go to their buses. PERSONNEL CHANGES Several new people have been added to the familiar faces at B.H.S. Mrs. Susan Nixon and Mrs. Karen Whitfield taught the kindergarten which proved to be very successful this year. Mrs. Peggy Hughes. Mrs. Kathy Crumby, and Mrs. Wanda Mrs. Kinnaird was captured by the camera one afternoon as she worked at her daily duties. O’Quinn did an outstanding job with the special education program. We have also seen the coming of a new secretary, Mrs. Shirley Kinnaird. who has done a wonderful job. Two alumni have also returned to offer their services as bus drivers. Bruce Thornton and Ronnie Ritter now have regular routes. Mrs. Crumby, the speech therapist, aids two students in the pronunciation of syllables. Mrs. Hughes works with some of her special education students, utilizing new learning devices. 4 Ping pong was a favorite sport for the girls. ACADEMIC CHANGES In addition to the kindergarten and special education programs, B.H.S. has acquired three new courses for high school students. After an absence of three years, advanced math is again part of the offered curriculum. Taken by juniors and seniors, it is a course designed to increase one’s aptitude in the engineering mathematics. Girls who had study hall fifth period were given the option of attending a P.E. class. The girls played volleyball and ping pong and were taught emergency first aid procedures. World geography was offered this year as an elective for seniors.lt acquaints the student with the political and social customs and doctrines of countries throughout the world. 5 Mrs. Copeland taught the world geography class. CAMPUS CHANGES Graduates of a few years back would not recognize the new B.H.S.! The football field that has been used for years is going to be ‘put out to pasture’ soon. A new field is in the process of being constructed behind the gym. Remember the old lunchroom and home economics building? It has been totally remodeled and is now in use as rooms for two kindergarten classes and several special education classes. With the additions of kindergarten, remedial reading, and remedial math, special education courses, and speech therapy instruction, the old new building has become a very useful part of B.H.S. From see-through walls and sawdust to miniature chairs and people to occupy them . . . This patch of grass will soon be the new football field. It will soon be used by the senior, junior, and pee wee teams. 6 Mrs. Sharp’s home economics building has been improved bit by bit. This year cabinets were added for storage and a room was closed off for changing clothes. The organizations in the school, notably Student Council. In cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service, are beginning plans for an outdoor classroom. This classroom will be utilized by all grades as a means for studying nature, Shakesperean plays, or just getting outside on a pretty day. One can easily see that all of these many changes have added to the efficiency and attractiveness of Bismarck School. The cabinets allow more space for moving and the new room gives privacy for sewing students to try on their creations! This simple, beautiful wooded area will hopefully be converted to a place of studying and experiencing nature on a more personal level. The plans are for a Clearwater pond, a seating area, a podium for speaking, and all species of plants that grow in the area. 7 9 Student Council Promotes 1976-77 Student Council Officers and Members — STANDING: May Lynn Scott, reporter; Tammy Prince; Renee Tankersley; Anita Moore, president; Penny McClard; Debbie Ray; Leesa Smyly, sec.-treas.; Robin Nutt; Lynne Henderson, June Thomas, v. president; Shari Douglas; Janice Sheets. We Seniors are happy, but yet a melancholy feeling will be with us as we leave. Good times have been numerous in this, our last year of high school. On a more personal lever, I know that I will miss B.H.S. I am very grateful for the friends I have made and for the memories I have of my times here. The staff has been terrific in coming up with new, fresh ideas for the yearbook. Mrs. Hall has been a very definite stabilizing influence. Her guidance, friendship, and “shoulder-to-cry-on” have all been welcome, to all of us on the 1977 Yearbook Staff. Now, it is time for us Seniors to step aside. Best wishes to next year’s staff come from Lisa, Tammy, Diane, and myself. We hope that we have succeeded in leaving an extra-special momento to the students of B.H.S. Anita Moore Editor THE WAY WE WERE (From the Columbia Picture, Rastar Production entitled “The Way We Were”) Lyric by Alan and Marilyn Berman. Music by Marvin Hamlisch. Memories Light the corners of my mind— Misty watercolor memories of The Way We Were. Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind— Smiles we gave to one another for The Way We Were. Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again. Tell me, would we? Could we? Memories May be beautiful and yet. What's too painful to remember, We simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The Way We Were. The Way We Were. c Copyright 1973 by Colgems-EMI Music Inc.
