School spirit is a definite element in the daily life of a school. This spirit must be a never ending spirit, something one must always strive for even though defeat may be definite. School spirit should not exist only between classes, during athletic contests, or pep rallies, but must be lived in each student. School spirit must be promoted not only by the student body, but also by the teachers and the community. This spirit must begin with pride in one's class, school, and community; and most of all the pride one receives through winning. We. the members of the Yesteryear Staff, wish to bring to you the Sounds of Spirit heard throughout B.H.S. this year. These sounds were heard through the outstanding football and basketball teams; the cheerleaders, who planned the bonfires and pep rallies; and the students who took part. 2 Mr. Wallis Holt Superintendent On behalf of the Board of Directors, administration, faculty, employees, and student body, I wish to express our appreciation to Mrs. Hall and the annual staff for an excellent yearbook. May each one represented use the 1972 Yesteryear as a remembrance of the days at Bismarck School. Mr. Wallis Holt Superintendent Hie Calendar 1971 Mr. Holt checks the activities calendar for dates concerning student activities. Mr. Holt takes time from his busy schedule for a picture. ■ Board Of Directors As we the students and faculty strive to build spirit and a sense of pride in Bismarck High School, we must stop and consider those who help make this possible. Without the outstanding leadership of these men, the intense interest they have for the school, and the unselfish giving of their time, B.H.S. would not be as we know it. These men, our 1971-72 Board of Directors, have made it possible for us to look forward to a never ending spirit that will keep B.H.S. forever near to our hearts. Principals 6 Mr. Doyle Henderson Mr. Floyd Looper Mr. Doyle Henderson, Mr. Floyd Looper, and Mr. Ronnie Holt work together toward a smooth running and progressive system for the Bismarck School system. They are highly respected by the student body and constantly strive to raise the standards of the school system. Although they are busy with their many duties as principals, they never lose touch with the individual student who is their main concern. These individuals, who are a part of the Bismarck School system, play some of the most important roles in that system, for without the nutritious lunches, the efficient buildings, and our safety to and from school, we could not look forward to building the spirit and pride in B.H.S. Mrs. Hall and Diane work daily on the yearbook. A typical happening is the long line at the school store. 12 Most everyone spends their activity periods and lunch hours talking on the outside of the high school building. A very typical desk of a very average student. Senior Girls basketball team kneel in prayer before every game. Crowded hallways are characteristic of changing classes. Couples spend their free time conversing while sitting on the wall. 14 Queen Donna The 1971-72 Homecoming Queen was Donna McClard. Donna is 5feet 9 inches tall, has blonde hair and blue eyes. Kenny and Lester lost their lives Feburary 26, 1972 in a highway accident near Point Cedar. Kenny, who was a junior, was the son of Mr. Mrs. Kenneth Diffee. Lester, who was a member of the sixth grade, was the son of Mr. Mrs. Horace Davis. The tragic loss of these two boys has had a tremendous effect on the lives of those who were their friends and loved them. In Memory . . . Every harsh and vexing thing At thy home-fire lost its sting; Where thou wast was always spring. And thy perfect trust in good, Faith in man and womanhood, Chance and change and time withstood. Small respect for can't and whine, Bigot's zeal and hate malign, Had that sunny soul of thine. But to thee was duty's claim Sacred, and thy lips became Reverent with one holy Name. Therefore, on thy unknown way, Go in God's peace! We who stay But a little while delay. Keep for us, O friend, where'er Thou art waiting, all that here Made thy earthly presence dear; Something of thy pleasant past On a ground of wonder cast, In the stiller waters glassed! Keep the human heart of thee; Let the mortal only be Clothed in immortality. And when fall our feet as fell Thine upon the asphodel, Let thy old smile greet us well; Proving in a world of bliss What we fondly dream in this,— Love is one with holiness! 146 —John Greenleaf Whittier Kenny Diffee Lester Davis “Sounds Of Spirit” Lingers On Senior members of the Yesteryear Staff Donna Me C lard Editor When I was asked, in the eighth grade, to be on the annual staff I was surprised and honored when I was told this would mean I would be editor my senior year. This time seemed so far away, but now it is over. Being on the staff meant working hard through the year and attending workshop in the summer. In preparing myself for the responsibilities I was to face I attended three weeklong workshops. When the final workshop approached, with the help of the other staff members present, we began to plan the entire yearbook and choose the theme. As things began to fall into place and school started we worked hard developing our theme Sounds of Spirit . At this time I want to thank each member of the staff for their hard work. I hope no one was hurt because 1 had to be bossy in order to get things done. The staff was divided into two periods and this became very trying at times. I would like to give special thanks to my business manager, Ellen Yates, for the help she gave me as my right hand man, and to Mrs. Hall, our advisor, for her untiring work and worry. Now it is completed and the working on holidays and exemption days is over. It has been a pleasure working with each staff member. I hope you enjoy this twenty-seventh volume of the Yesteryear and get as much enjoyment out of it as we did publishing it.
