He is survived by his parents, Mr. Mrs. David Burroughs, and his sisters, Pamela, Susan, and Doris Burroughs, all of Bismarck. Jimmy was a member of the seventh grade class and was elected seventh grade class favorite in 1970. He was a member of the Bismarck Church of God. Jimmy will always be found in the memories of his friends and will long be remembered by them. What Is Death It is not death to die— To leave this weary road. And, 'mid the brotherhood on high. To be at home with God. It is not death to close The eye long dimmed by tears. And wade in glorious repose To spend eternal years. It is not death to bear The wrench that sets us free From dungeon chain, to breathe the air Of boundless liberty. It is not death to fling Aside this sinful dust. And rise on strong exulting wing To live among the just. Jesus, thou Prince of life Thy chosen cannot die! Like thee they conquer in the strife To reign with thee on high. ---Abraham H. C. Mai an 2 DEDICATION The 1970-71 Yesteryear Staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to: Mrs. O'Neal Cook Because of her untiring services and her dedication to teaching, we would like to show our appreciation to Mrs. Cook by dedicating this yearbook to her. Mrs. Cook has taught at Bismarck for fifteen years and has twenty years total teaching experience. She has served as a commerical teacher, and for the last eight years, she has been our high school math teacher. Mrs. Cook and her family are an inspiration to our community and our school. Board of Directors Dale Anthony President Waymon Prince Vice President Hollis Looper Secretary We were fortunate to have men of high standards and dedicated purposes to serve on the Bismarck School Board. They met regularly to carry out the business of the Bismarck School District. These men have given their valuable time and knowledge to help Bismarck move forward and develop into what we feel is an outstanding educational institute. Without their patience and cooperation the Bismarck School System could not have progressed and maintained its educational qualities. Don Russell ■4 Jack Anderson Sup erin tendent On behalf of the faculty and students, I would like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Hall and the 1970-71 Yearbook Staff for an excellent yearbook. Many hours of supervision, planning, and work have made this, one of our best yearbooks. jUc i t Mr. Wallis Holt Superintendent 5 Mr. Holt enjoys his new move into the superintendent's office in the Science Building. Traditions Remain As The 1970-71 Yesteryear Staff chose B.H.S. On The Move” as our theme for this year's book. We, as everyone else, realize time is moving and things have to change, but we hold dear a few things called traditions. Perhaps the most important tradition at Bismarck is making true and lasting friendships, not only with our peers but also with our teachers who help keep that valuable tradition learning ever growing in our minds. Basketball and football are traditions we are very proud of. Without sports B.H.S. would be somewhat lacking. The first basketball games Bismarck participated in were played on outside courts sometime in the early 1930's. B.H.S. Moves Forward Football is newer to Bismarck having started about twenty-two years ago. Since then we have been honored with trophies of many kinds which are on display in the gymnasium. In 1953 Bismarck had its first homecoming, henceforth it has been one of the highlights of the school year. Much hard and diligent work goes into the making of this one day affair. The Yesteryear also a worthy tradition, was first published in 1945. Without this book perhaps we could not recall the events quite as vividly as the annual enables us to do. We the 1970-71 Yesteryear Staff take our hats off to Tradition , but we must keep B.H.S. on the move. . . 7 Never Ending Progress Keeps Bismarck High School Moving. . . 8 The completion of the Science Building last summer is an added attraction to our expanding school. The building contains four classrooms, a science laboratory, and the superintendent's office. The Science Building has moved Bismarck forward academically and has given the teachers better equipment and additional space to teach more effectively. Seniors of 1971 will be able to say they were the first senior class to use the new building and can take pride in having done so in the future years. 9 Many new teaching techniques and devices were introduced to Bismarck this year. Among them were the planetarium used in earth science and the tape player with various tapes of economic interest which was purchased for consumer economics. And in Elementary, although it is not new this year, we have a remedial reading program which has helped many students with its modern audio and visual aids. These are just a few of the techniques and devices that keep B.H.S. on the move academically. 10 High School Principals Mr. Doyle Henderson has returned to Bismarck High School this year as principal. Mr. Henderson attended the University of Arkansas and Henderson State College. He is married and has three children. Mr. Henderson has brought with him new ideas in discipline and ideas for the curriculum. He has attained the respect and friendship of each student. Mr. Doyle Henderson Mr. Floyd Looper has added the job of principal to the position he held as junior high math teacher. Mr. Looper attended Henderson State College. He is married and has two children. Mr. Looper has filled his job well and has brought honor and distinction to ideas of discipline and education. 12 Mr. Henderson keeps down mischief in the halls. B.H.S. Faculty Mr. Jimmy Allen Basketball Coach' American History Mrs. O’Neal Cook Mathematics Mrs. Jan Copland Business I i Mrs. Farrell Hall Librarian, English Mrs. Dennis Holt, Jr. English Mrs. Dewey Howell English Mrs. Howell takes time to help a student in study hall. The teachers of B.H.S. are ever moving forward to help the students acquire the best education they can receive. With the use of new methods and modern equipment the teachers hope to motivate each student until he attains the goals that he has set for himself in life. The women teachers enjoy their last day at school before Christmas vacation. 13 Mrs. Elwin Jackson Secretary Mr. Carl Jensen Science, Biology, Chemistry Mrs. George Sharp Consumer Education, Home Economics B.H.S. Faculty Mrs. Don Smith Science Mr. Bob Watson Agriculture Mr. Clarence Wooten Football Coach, Geography 14 Each teacher at Bismarck has worked hard through the past years for us. With qualified minds and nerves of steel, they have filled our days with questions, thoughts, and answers to many of our problems. The men teachers take time for relaxation their Christmas party. Mrs. Holt was surprised with a baby shower before she left. at Maintenance In order to keep B.H.S. on the move it takes the work of many individuals working together as a team. The maintenance is a very good example of this. They work together for the upkeeping of our school in a very cooperative way. Our respect and gratitude goes out to our maintenance for without them we would lack nourishing meals, well kept buildings, and efficient and safe bus routes. Student Council In this ever moving age there seems to be a gap between generations. We, at BHS, might be potential victims of this gap, because there is definitely two generations at Bismarck, but we have found a mediator through the Student Council. The council is made up of senior high school students, who. in the spring, are elected by the student body after a campaign. Through the year they strive for improvements in the school and better teacher-student relationship. Glen Shuffield and Sandy Hartsell display one of the T-shirts the Student Council sold. The coronation followed traditional process, with the crowning and robing of the queen followed by a pep rally led by the cheerleaders. The Junior Class Perhaps they didn't know when they were well off, or maybe they were just gluttons for punishment, but Hercules Nelson's uncle and aunt had long wanted him to come spend a week end with them. And to top it off. they even went so far as to say he could bring his bosom pal, Wilbur Maxwell. So with suitcases in hand, the boys arrive at Uncle Bob's, set for a big week end. That's putting it mildly indeed because Hercules knows his uncle has taken a new job. but what he doesn't know until it's too late is that uncle is a mortician. That's right, an undertaker. Needless to say. the toys are terrified and this leads to a week end of one humorous incident after another. Madeline Quigley: Linda Dean. Harry Schuster: Gary Whitfield. When we think of these times, our teachers are the ones who first appear in our minds. To be an elementary teacher requires patience, skill, a never ending drive and numerous other talents. They not only have to be well educated but have to have a real desire to teach. Both Bismarck and New DeRoche take pride in having a very dedicated staff of teachers this year. Grade School, Grade school is a time in life held dear to all of us. We made our first real friends, learned how to read and write, and formed opinions that stayed with us throughout our lives. The next three pages are filled with just a few pictures taken throughout the year of these children and their outstanding events. First graders take time out from their work for their picture to be taken. The boys' favorite recess activity is playing on the wall with model cars. 99 A Tim e For Cliff Harris poses with several admiring grade school boys. Third graders captured after an enjoyable recess. Bozo visited the fifth and sixth graders. He is shown here with Phyllis Burton and Tim Jorden. Gayle Henson, with fifth and sixth graders, helps with the process of photography. 100 Learning, Laughing, The above first through fourth graders participated in the piano recital. As we the 1970-71 Yesteryear Staff review the book in which we attempted to present a glimpse of Bismarck School life, we think of those who helped us reach our goal. We would like to thank each one for their help in making our 1971 Yesteryear possible. Looking over the Yesteryear, we remember the trying times and endless effort necessary to produce an annual. We hope this time has been well spent and you will enjoy our 1971 Yesteryear THE YESTERYEAR STAFF If time were not a moving thing, There would be no yesterdays, Nor precious todays, Nor hope of bright tomorrows. If time were not a moving thing, We would not be blessed with The beauty of the sunrise, And more beautiful sunset. If time were not a moving thing.
