Greg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Shinn, was born July 21, 1953. He was an officer of the 68-69 Sophomore Class, a member of the FFA, and Unity Missionary Baptist Church. His personality and the Christian life he lived shall be truly remembered by each one that knew him. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourn of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. 2 —Tennyson The 1970 YESTERYEAR is proudly dedicated to The 1970 YESTERYEAR is proudly dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Holt We of the Yesteryear Staff wish to dedicate this 1970 Yesteryear to an inspring couple. A couple who has spent many of their years together in helping and teaching others. Those who have been under their teaching have felt an enrichment of knowledge and character. We are thankful for their guidance. Mrs. Holt teaches the third grade in elementary. Mr. Holt is elementary principal and teaches history and geography in junior high. The school will definitely feel a loss when Mr. and Mrs. Holt retire at the closing of the 1969-70 school year. We wish them fulfillment and happiness in the future. Mr. and Mrs. Holt, Good luck and the best of everything. These times in Even as men walk on the moon and great discoveries are made, every day happenings still fill the greater part of our lives. We, of the school age group, spend a large part of our lives at school and in its activities. During these times opinions are formed of each other, of our elders, and of controversial subjects, lasting friendships are made and some of our most enjoyable times are connected with school. These times in our lives, memorable and exciting, are recorded within the pages of this, our YESTERYEAR 1970. Freshmen girls, Donna Hardage, Kathy Colvin, Patty Glasgow, and Judy Keith discuss important matters with Mr. Holt. our lives Ronnie Lambert takes time out in English class for a much-needed nap. STOP ON SIGNAL 251 5 As these pages of the YESTERYEAR tell of the year 1970 and its unforgettable memories, you will realize that none are quite so exciting, quite so enriching, or as memorable as these times. We, of the YESTERYEAR Staff, hope that you enjoy our account of THESE TIMES IN OUR LIVES. 5 Board of directors Clifford McClard President Dale Anthony Secretary Hollis Looper Vice President Waymon Prince Jack Anderson The school board is composed of outstanding men in the Bismarck community, usually having children in the Bismarck Schools. Because they take an avid interest in the student's welfare, the decisions they make are to improve our education and environment. 6 Mr. Holt enjoys a quiet evening with Mrs. Holt after a hard day at school. Superintendent I wish each student represented in this volume of YESTERYEAR success and happiness in the future, and hope each of you has gained something in your journey toward higher goals. Your success depends upon your efforts and the efforts of the faculty. May each graduating senior meet the responsibilities of life in a way that you may say that the time spent at Bismarck School has not been wasted. A man deeply concerned with the students, exerting his efforts for their benefit, and quietly but wisely disciplining them—this is a character portrait of Mr. Wallis Holt, our dedicated superintendent. His interest and concern will, and does, affect our lives. Mr. Holt helps clean the trophies and move them to their new place in the gym. 7 8 HIGH SCHOOL 9 High school In these times in our lives, we must stop and consider the people who are accompanying us down life's road. But he still couldn't persuade Mama and Papa to jar down—to get him one. So, when Papa was called away for a week-long business trip. Mom was persuaded to go with him for sort of a honeymoon, and the house was left in charge of sister Connie and sister Betty Lou, Wilbur got his idea. He would make his own money and buy his own bicycle. He would open up a boarding house right here. So into the paper went the ad, and that night the whole Maxwell house was crawling with people. Now every room in the house was full, Wilbur was doing a bang up business, and then it happened. Mama and Papa Maxwell, at two o'clock of the next morning came dragging home—Papa forgot his briefcase. From there on out, it was one mess after another. Finally, it was discovered somebody in the house was a bank robber, and poor Papa was mistakenly carted off to the clink. What a mess until the real bank robbers, Limpy and Nora McGuire, were found, Papa got out of jail, and Wilbur got his bicycle. Evelyn, worked in an office and helped as much as possible, but the fifteen year old twins, Winnie and Binnie had to be provided for. Mrs. Buford happened to think of her husband's rich aunt from California. She wrote and told her about her three fine children. Soon after, a letter came from Aunt Sop-hronia which said she would stop for a few days'visit while on her trip East. She said she intended to give each girl a check for $5,000. Since she despises boys, Winnie decided to pose as a girl in order to get his check. On the last day of Aunt Sophronia's visit, she announced she would have given $25,000 if there had been a boy to carry on the family name. Poor Winnie. He could have checked himself for overplaying his hand. But a surprising event took place which made everything all right and he got his big check afterall. In all, Junior High years are h£.ppy years. Boys change books between classes. A few had to get their lessons during activity period. Ik classes the race is on for the water Between fountain. As we start to school and go through the years of grade school, we look up to the teachers who guide us. We find no fault at all and pattern our lives, if possible, by theirs or pick up some of their habits. These people must have patience and understanding to look over our childhood whims. They must live a life before us that will be fitting for us to see and imitate if we want. We, who have been through these years, feel that each of the grade school teachers at Bismarck and New DeRoche fulfill these qualities. Mr. Ronnie Holt Principal New DeRoche Fifth and Sixth Mrs. Ronnie Looper Third and Fourth Mrs, Arthur Bass First and Second Mr. N. C. Bryan Sixth Mr. Lawrence Vowan Fifth and Sixth 104 Faculty Mrs. Tommy Neel Fifth Mrs. Floyd Looper Fourth Mrs. Clarence Holt Third Mrs. Joe Smith Second Mrs. John Small First and Second Mrs. Julia Smart First Elementary student life childhood The times of the elementary school years are exciting—from the new friendships and playground incidents to the discoveries made in the classroom. Children learn to get along with others, to share, and to think for themselves. Plays and assemblies throughout the school year are given by the classes. Parties also add to the fun. These students participated in the piano recital given by Mrs. Barbara Hardage. Studying is important at New DeRoche, too. Recess over, the children rush back to their classrooms so they won't be tardy. Library books provide interest in reading and entertainment to these New DeRoche students. 106 Innocence, mischievousness, and eagerness to learn Two little girls find privacy to tell their secrets behind their umbrella. K. Treadaway The Bismarck garage completed in the summer of 1969, was dedicated to a former mechanic and bus driver, Mr. J.K. Treadaway. Mr. Treadaway was employed by Bismarck Schools for 17 years before his death on April 10, 1970. A friend of all, Mr. Treadaway will remain in the hearts of everyone at Bismarck. The newly organized Lions Club at Bismarck had a sign made and erected on the new building. rnfrj rr The Bismarck Lions Club purchased and had the sign erected on the new garage. Epilogue These Times In Our Lives.... I feel that this time in my life has certainly been exciting and rewarding! Probably like many more new editors, I was at first overwhelmed at my responsibilities. It all started at workshop when I had to plan every page—where it would be—the whole plan of the book. After lots of changes it finally looked decent.—But that wasn't all. When school started, I had a wonderful staff and sponsor to work with, but I was not bossy enough to put the members to work. Finding so many pages to be done, I overcame that problem fairly quickly. And I've found the decision making tough. I've never been able to make up my mind in a hurry! Somehow, probably due to the staff members being so cooperative and Mrs. Hall, our sponsor, being so patient and understanding, I was able to overcome these and other obstacles. Now that our yearbook is presented to you, we hope that you enjoyed to the fullest the yearbook's account of These Times In Our Lives. A special thanks to all who helped it be what we think is a great success! Mary Daniel walswortm Editor Marctliir. Mo.. t'.S.A 1
