V PRAIRIE f 'f Published by f rn5sfN10RCLAss X f BISVIARCK HIGH SCHCDOL BI5P'IARCK,NORTH DAKOTA 4 X I J ., x x F ORE WORD The loud speakers on the walls of every room of our school announced to Danny Demon all the coming activities and events. He noted carefully where the next athletic game would be played, who was giving the dance to be held soon, or when his club would hold its next meeting. The latest news about these and other activities of which B. H. S. presents so many to Danny, Donna, and all their friends, is announced to them in this convenient way. By means of these heralders of school news, the loud speakers, we present to all of you Dannys and Donnas of Bisrr arck High School a permanent record of '45. DEDICA T10 It is to the voice behind the announcements that we owe many thanks for some of the good times we have had in and around school: interesting courses of study, dances, athletic games, assemblies and many other activities. Without the friendly cooperation of the man behind this voice our school would lack something that makes it definitely B. H. S. Therefore, to show our appreciation of him, we dedicate to Mr. Cf W. Mayer, '1'rea.fuver, Seven ART DEPAR TME T RUTH Runsriz From 'iBoogie to Bach was depicted by abstract designs in music, Miss art for art's sake Rudser tells us about one of the high school art projects, A few weeks later they proudly scoffed at a magazine article describing a similar project as being new because to them it seemed old stuff. Another fascinatf ing task for our young Cbut good D artists was drawing pictures using, in each, only one basic color plus variations of this color made by mixing others with it. In addition to classftime learning, these gals gain knowledge of art through ser' vice to B.H.S. Did you notice the beautiful copy of the Christmas seal on the window of the first floor landing during the holidays? This design, an accomplish' ment of the art class, was admired by Danny and the students as well as outsiders. A linoleum block, cut to resemble our service honor roll, enabled the Herald to devote a whole page to our B.H.S. servicemen. For these and many other servicf es such as poster making, we thank the art class and wish them luck as future jon Whitcombs. Eight MUSIC DEPAR TME CLARION LARSON The school spirit aroused at our athletic games and in assemblies is largely due to the musical talent that is so abundant in the uniformed band. One of Danny's best pals plays a coronet and Danny, playing a clarf inet himself, really thinks the band is super! All B.H.S.'ers certainly admire and envy those slick' uniformed guys and gals. Let's not forget the second band either, for they're working right on up there too. The orchestra plays some of the neatest arrange' ments we've ever heard. VAN HEUVELEN Begin the Beguinew and many other modern chorus numbers sent Danny and his friends during pep meetings and assemblies. Under the direction of Mr. Van Heuvelen, who has brought science into the art of singing Cproved to be a marvelous idealj, the Mixed Chorus and A Cappella Choir have always been ready to add their bit to most school programs. They certainly provided a lot for the production of Gloria and for all the ceremonies near graduation time. These maroonfgowned canaries of Bismarck High are really two groups of which we students can well he proud. MIXED CHORUS Fmsr Row: Beers, Hering. This one statement has probably caused more headaches, late cramming hours, and crowded libraries than any other one uttered to the Junior and Senior English classes. It's not that Danny wasn't given plenty of time to prepare his speech, he just didr1't seem to get around to it. Reigning over the third floor English classes are Mr. Burns Cour walkieftalkie professorb and Mr. Reidel, near the college lounge. QNulf said D All kidding aside though, we should really be proud of our English def partment. They're trying their best to prepare Danny and Donna for what follows this-be it college, jobs, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, or Marines. T I ENGLISH DEPA R TMEN T Who killed Duncan? Danny got a big kick out of being able to snap the right answer at the radio before the experts on Information Please. If it hadn't been for Miss johnson's drilling that into his brain he could never have answered it. How he wishes that he would have paid more attention to his three Literature and English teachers4Miss johnson, Miss Murphy, and Miss Edmunds! They toiled to help him along and he thought he was doing them a favor. We all realize our own past mistakes and regardless of our old brainless days Cwe're smart Seniors now D, we did learn a great deal from our English and Literature teachers. Rn-A MURPHY Liam. EDMUNDS Thirteen LA G UA GE DEPAR TME T GEORGE LOSEN Commentfallezfvous? and similar confusing bits of French as well as Spanish and Latin are heard leaking out of Mrs. Bantz's and Mr. Losen's rooms. Don't be alarmed! It's all in a day's work for Danny and Donna. Quid est is thrown at bewildered Freshmen for them to digest-if they can. But in spite of the stern looks these two profs pass on to their frustrated beginners, they're pretty swell! Danny gets rather tired of learning long lists of Latin words- but he Ends it's fun to be able to say Ego amo te to Donna in that foreign way. Who knows? Mayl:e some day Danny will get his chance to use a little French over seas, and Donna may end up in South America to fascinate those exotic South Americans with her knowledge of Spanish. Yup! All in all we figure that our foreign languages will come in mighty handy in the future! For SOCIAL S CIE CE l Do you know your government? Well, if you didn't before you landed in either Mr. Lee's or Mr. Nelson's Civics classes, you do now! Danny has confessed that once in a while he's wished that we had a much simpler govern' ment. Then there's Sociology. Are you an idiot? Ctoo?!j What's Miss Evarts got that we haven't got?4The test answers, natch'l Nevertheless we tried! Hmm-wish we had as many dates as history always has! Struggling with the sophomores on second floor is Mrs. Pollard who like Miss Evarts, is really one of our favorites. Summing it all up we have an Afr Social Science department! CWish they'd rate us Afi toolj J X. ,T ,X g A We A Q i i ifiis .. .. 3 ' l . Gam-Runs Ev.-in-rs E. C. NELSON Sinmw j. Lmz MELX'INA POLLARD Fifteen MATHEMATICS E5 SCIENCE Iiwm Huss MILDRED Huis Lucmz ANDERSON 16Cx+yD+zaC3b+cD:? Your guess is as good as ours! How Danny Demon hates to come merrily CDid we say that? Half asleep 'rathe1!j breezing into math class early in the morning only to be shocked into utter wakefulness by a very difhcult equation glaring at him from the blackboard. Ah! What an extreme satisfaction he gets out of working it all by himself! After Mrs. Andere son Qfrom her perch on the deskj, Miss Huff Cwith that 'this is right' lookb, or Mr. Huss Cwith that engaging smilej has explained the problem, it looks like a cinch! The calculatin' calculators of Bismarck High will tell you that although math isn't easy it has its advantages. And also, kidlets, it's supposed to teach you to think. CNOW isn't that somethin'D S 1 MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE If you've noticed the tricky test tube twirlers, of which Danny is one, tearing out of chemistry lab even before the bell rings, it is probably due to a horrible assignment such as making hydrogen sulfide. Teaching the juniors and seniors chemistry is the pleasant QD duty of Mr. Anderson Qwith his theory of atoms being boyffriends, etc.j and Mr. Van Heuvelen Cwho also creates college chemistsj. Incidentally, we rate them among the best! Biology, in which we learn to classify those gruesome little crawling things, is taught by Mr. Schrum, Those beastly boneless bugs to be disected may make you a bit squeamish but believe us, when Cand ifj you pass that course, you really know something. lt takes brains to learn physics, Mr. Hool-Us proud pupils inform us. O.K. we agree-only we've heard that aeronautics isn't a snap either. Mr. Eugene, Mr. Nelson, and Mrs. A add to our scienceflearnin' with general science, mostly for Freshies. , CHARLES Hook :en 1 COMMERCE DEPAR TMEN T Lois Kuuc JUANITA EDICK ET:-ini. ROBINSON Clickityfclack, clickityfclack, clickityfclack echoes along the third floor. This plus numerous screams and unmentionable words originate in the typing room. Typical of these keyflcnockers, taught by Mrs. Quiet! Edick and Miss Time's up! Kirk, is Donna-Danny's latest. CShe's definitely smoooothlj Sauntering next door we discover Miss Robinson reigning over the dizzy do- main of bookkeepers. Add the first sum to the second, divide by three, multi- ply by five -well you tell us, you future book checkers and income tax collect' ors. fYou probably will! Leavenworth, here we come D Frightening the short' hand students into perfection is Mrs. Edick's favorite phrase, To make a misf take once is excusable, twice is stupid. From these not so silent sanctums will come many a super secretary or stenographer and numerous brainy bookkeepers with much needed knowledge to shower on the business world. Eighzecn HOME ECO OMICS Lois ANDuRs1zN MABBL ANGVALL Ummmmmm! What is that luscious odor floating up to the second floor? Danny and a few other of us hungry seniors followed it down to the basement where we found Donna and the home ec gals canning pheasants. Ah!-to be one of the favored boys who is allowed to snitch a delicious morsel. Exploring this neat new department we discovered forty gals fighting for seven sewing machines to complete their weird patterned pajamas. We looked at the plans the house wives of tomorrow have drawn up for an ideal home with my ideal man. We saw one girl planning a laundry in which one would need only to press a simple button to have the machine, soap, and water all go into action at once-from different corners of the room. Our advice to the lucky man is that for safety's sake he should steer clear of the basement on washdays. Teaching the Hrst year is Mrs. Angvall while Miss Andersen teaches the advanced food and frock fixers. cn I D USTRIAL ART MARSHALL Munnocn T. E, Smut JOHN HEINLE Dit, dit, dit-fda, da, daffdit dit dit, resounds through the basement where Mr. Heinle teaches radio. These code calculators not only operate but also make radio sets. The complicated blueprints for them are astutely assembled by the miraculouslyfminded mechanical drawing class. Danny Demon discovers Mr. Murdoch attempting to form a Rosie the Riviteru out of every hammer' hound in his class. Not only do they weld and do metal work, but they, just as neatly, practice to be carpenters. If there are ever any stage sets to be mend' ed or bond booths to be made, these boys are ready to oblige and raring to go! The fellows who are really busy during any sport season are our printers, under Mr. ujust call me Sim Simle's able direction. They print tickets galore for all athletic games and also will accommodate Cwith a smilelj anyone requesting dance tickets, etcetera. So to the boys of radio, shop, mechanical drawing, and printing, we sayffmore power to you! T L AGRICUL TURE E. j, Scmzum 'iLearning to dog doing to learng earning to liveg living to serve. This is the swell motto of vocational agriculture, taught in B.H.S. to some of Danny's best friends by Mr. Schrum. These moofminded fellows have gained much valuable knowledge of livestock this year. This, they proudly tell us, is necesf sary in order that a boy can manage a farm Con his own D in the most modern way. If you've detected a steady pounding rising from the basement, you are no doubt listening to some ag student hammering away on a sweep rake for a farm carpentry projedt. Or maybe he is repairing some vital equipment-Cor vice versa on his Hrst try D. Nevertheless, with brains plus brawn one can learn the inside dope of farm training. To these boys, who all are Future Farmers of America, we say good luck and good farming! Our state needs you. vfo ' rf' GIRLS ' PHYSICAL ED UGA T10 One, two, three, four -up and down stretch our gymnastic gals. It seems easy today, but oh-the morning after! Exercising right along with them is Miss Bashara with her Armyflike Fall in command flung at a long line of stragglers. Also, there's nothing like a rough, rousing game of basketball to put Donna in good spirits-even when it is refereed by our mild gym 4ff's. On Monday a fascinatin' fun fest is featured in the basement. You can brush up on your jitterbugging or try your luck at a game of checkers or ping-pong. How could we ever overlook those strengthfsubtracting relay races? If you think it's easy, we suggest that you try to crawl in an upsidefdown crawling position from one end of the floor to the other at top speed. Conhdentially, though we grumble and groan, we really go for gym-in a big way! .W ff SARA BASHARA Tu cn: y, BOYS' PHYSICAL EDUCATIO L'Sock him, Danny! This familiar cry issues forth from the boys' gym room accompanied by cheers for the winner of one of the much talked of boxing matches. These rugged athletes are coached by Mr. Charles Atlas Denton who seems to enjoy the slaughters as much as his boys. Basketball is another favorite with these fastfmoving youths. just watching one of these games is a task in itself, let alone trying to referee. Don't think the boys don't perform more than their share of musclefbuilding exercises too! To be able to brag that you can maneuver fortyfeight pushfups makes up for the broken back acquired while doing them. Wrestling and tumbling are two more difficult sports to be conquered daily in these gym classes. We're sure that many a physical weakling who passed through the phyfed doors this fall will emerge next spring as young Charlie Atlases. C. T. DENTON vny-ahve: LIBRAR Y LILLIAN LANGEMO I . Books from Stevenson's to Saroyan's can be found in our library supervised by Miss L'Silence, genius at work! Langemo, our new librarian. There really is plenty of reading materialffcurrent and modernff to interest us hard to please iso they tell usll B. H. Sfers. Danny and Donna are allowed to go to that super sanctum to accomplish many thingsffreading magazines and books, making bool-1 reports and doing research work. Numerous noisy screams of Sign me out too! are directed in the study halls toward the one nearest the library list. To be able to sign out from study hall for library means an hour of pleasure, whether it be good literature, research work, or current history. Tu emyffom- ff? Wells, Buy a stamp today? asks one of our governing board. Danny and Donna are really proud when walking to school they see the Minute Man Flag still flying. The credit should go mostly to the Booster Board for selling the war stamps and bonds that cause that flag to be flying. To encourage the sales they have sponsored movies and special programs for assemblies and have arranged many many times for us to hear true accounts of the war from our own graduates back from the fronts. Advised by Mrs. Bantz, this group is largely responsible for our pep meetings, home coming events, and most other activities which make B. H. S. so definitely neat! , To the right is pictured the war stamp and bond my target with Hitler as the V fl NNW bullsfeye. Leading in the il ', ' - buying was the senior class A , I m with S2,482,5'S. Under Miss Bashara's direction these ambitious gals spend many an afternoon in the gym playing hasketball, soccer, and many other games. And believe meffyou should see them! They're good! On the lighter side they go in for dancingffin a big way, having given several sunlight hops and one super sensational formal dance. Talk about neat, huh? Fifzyfrhvce TEEN- CAN TEE w Danny and Donna are very proud of their TeenfCanteen and consider going there the most fun of all. The first TeenfCanteen Board, with Myron Atkinson as its president, really got the longfdreamedfof project in full gear during last summer, With money for furniture and a place all our own to fix as the students of B. H. S. and St. Mary's wanted, the project was begun with a bang! Various committees were formed and all high school volunteers were happily accepted. After cleaning the little gym thoroughly, a large archway dividing the room into two sections was erected. Stairs and a food and pop har were put up. Then the painting started. Garlsed in overalls and slopfshirts, many students came to wield paint brushes with vigor. With all the walls painted fone plaid, some with murals of dancing hguresj the main task was accomplished. Next came furnif ture. Appeals were made to Bismarckers to donate furniture, ping pong tables, and games. These the kids repaired and supplemented with new pieces, paid for with the city money. How did everything look?ffPERFECT! Immediately following the installation of a jukef box, students swarmed to the TeenfCanteen to dance. 'With pingfpong, checkers, chess, and other games provided, many came to participate in those. Hot dogs and pop are sold at the bar where a large gathering always can be found. Yes! TeenfCanteen is a success! We owe many thanks to the TeenfCanteen Boards under their past presidentsffMyron Atkinson, james McDonald, and jack Hesshurgffand to the City of Bismarck and many of its citizens for giving us this chance! The one loss was suffered at the hands of Fargo in the State Championship tilt here. The lighting Demons ran up 272 points to their opponents' 33, of which zo were scored by Fargo. Members of the first string were well represented in the Coaches' AllfState Teams-three making the first, two placing on the second, and the remaining six receiving honorable mention. Under Coach Denton the Bismarck Demon's of IQ44'4S were a group of skillful, wonderful players. In the Championship game they fought hard but lost under a great handicap, having played a tough muddy game four days earlier that caused them to lose their real form. This loss was the only one sustained in two years, for the teams of N43 and S44 won a total of thirteen games. The team got oif to a good start defeating St, Leo's and won the next eight games. Then the Demons ran up against the stone wall defense of the Hi' Liners and lost to them-37 to 31. The Demons were frequently high scoring, proved by their total points of 681 to their opponents' 472, and had the highest scoring team in the state. They worked hard all season and played probably their best games against their two rivals, Mandan and Fargo. Taking state scoring honors was Demon Elwood Bohn with 254 points made in the regular season and during the tournament. Kenny Hoff came in third while Wayne Lunn placed sixth. Plenty of credit goes to the two student managers, Dick johnson and jim McDonald, for they both did bangfup jobs. Coached splendidly by Marshall Murdoch, the Demons won third place in the tournaf ment, downing Wahpeton in their first game, losing to Valley City in the second, and defeating, in the third, Grand Forks.
