Mr. Leonard and Mrs. Lawson were too excited themselves to heed the minister's embarassed air or his wife's wild excitement. For a few moments they discussed various topics until Mr. Leonard interrupt- ing himself said quickly, The fact is, we've come to- ask you to marry us. We don't want any fuss or talk, so we took this way as being the quickest and most expedient. p There was a moment's silence. In the library two stupefied people were gazing at each other and then grasping the situation, jack dragged Margaret o-ut into the parlor. Mother, how could you F began Margaret. Father, this is an excellent example for your son, jack said severely. Neither parent offered an explanation for 'several seconds and then Mrs. Lawson plunged in, supplemented by Mr. Leonard. But, you were so opposed to us - You plotted against us every day down in the summer house, from Mr. Leonard. Margaret even tried to expostulate with me, and, jack treated me as an infant. Well, said jack, We'1l forgive yo-u, especially as we came for the same purpose. Go ahead, Dr. Martin, he continued to the minister. Mr. Leonard shut his lips tightly as if nothing could surprise him, but Mrs. Lawson looked reproachfully at Margaret. You see, Jack explained, We, did our level best to get your consent and have a real wedding but as father says, this way saves trouble and fuss. So. Dr. Martin, we'l1 make it a family affair. Therefore Iack's path was not easy and it was made harder yet by the knowledge that his father had only that day interviewed Mrs. Lawson. Both the young people had determined to assert their rights and to come to an understanding with their respective parents that very day. Margaret entered the library outwardly calm. Mother, may I speak to you a moment? It's really important. She was floundering badly and she realized it- May I-that is, Jack and I-we-- Margaret, Mrs. Lawson's manner was more bewil- dered than severe, you had much better go now and think calmly by yourself. VVhen you are more con- trolled it will be sufficient time for us to discuss this matter. She resumed her writing with an air of finality and Margaret retired with a sense of defeat. A I Over on the other porch jack walked uneasily up and down quite unconscious that he was disturb- ing his father's after' dinner nap. He had allowed his father to beat him three successive games of chess and that alone made him feel that victory might not be so unattainable. When Mr. Leonard at last seated himself in a shady spot with a newspaper, Jack approached him in a business like way. Father, just a moment, please,-we kno-w that you and Mrs. Lawson regard us as children, but we much desire- Mr. Leonard turned about and deliberately inspected Jack. Well, so you've come expecting to shake my re- solve-you and Margaret aren't old enough to express a ratio-nal opinion. Do not disturb me about that subject agarn please Jack beat a hasty retreat At four the young people met again They walked slowly up the dusty street each engaged in their own respective thoughts Jack mother thrnks that I have taken leave of my senses she won t even listen to me Jack mad meant to tell her of his own failure but her recital decided him Come on he said briefly quickenrng his pace Where? On Monday we must not be blue, For there is lots of work to dog And mail to look for after lunch- This day we sometimes get a bunch. On Tuesday for a walk we go-, As you on Delaware do know, Unless the weather interfere, And then you'1l always find us here. But VVednesday is an awful day, Nothing to do in any way, And if we don't play basket ball, Therels nothing to be done at all. Thursday to Bethlehem we go, Just like animals two in a rowg 'VVe shop and feast on Heiberger' S Cl'CZ1lll Where never a Lehigh man is seen. Friday can not come too soon, And from early in the afternoon VVe all begin to fuss a bit, Because we want to make a hit.
