We should be allowed, at least, the Qiiwmv respect due our ages, don't you think so ? Margaret assented almost tearfully, We must get this matter settled before night. I wish mo-ther weren't always too busy to listen to me. I must go now for it's lunch time, but I'll meet you at fo-ur for the walk, good-bye. b So they separated, jack walking moodily towards the big house at the left while Margaret hurried up the garden path. Since the death of Margaret's father nearly twenty years before, when she was only -two years old, Mrs. Lawson had endeavored to be everything to the girl. She had been forced to do less and less for her, however, as the years passed by and it became necessary for her once more to take up her lit- erary work, which had been dropped at the time of her marriage. Margaret, she decided, must be educated at boarding school as she had been, therefore she took up the work, reluctantly laid aside, in order to secure the necessary means. . When fourteen, Margaret left home and entered boarding school, only returning for short vacations, until she was twenty. This was a year previous to the opening of the story and the year had not been un- reservedly pleasant for either Margaret or her mother. Mrs. Lawson was deeply engrossed in her work and Margaret was left much to herself until one day, the thought came to her that perhaps she might assist her mother and by doing so gain a closer intimacy with her. Mrs. Lawson kindly but firmly refused all aid and gave Margaret, the feeling that her offer of assistance though well-meant, was a mistake. . Summer came and with it jack Leonard, whom she had known from her earliest childhood. When she had left him to go to school many promises o-f fidelity had been exchanged and, perhaps on the strength of these promises, jack immediately renewed their friendship. Mrs. Lawson welcomed him 'warmly not only because she felt him a pleasing companion for Margaret but because also she had acted as a mother to him during his younger days when his own mother's death had left him without a woman's care. The days glided by and when jack asked Margaret to marry him, she consented readily, provided her mother's approval could be obtained. She attempted to go to her and say in a commonplace way, Mother, jack has asked me to marry himf' but even these words came with difficulty and, after inter- rupting her Margaret left with a few stammered excuses which made her mother regard her vaguely. Therefore Iack's path was not easy and it was made harder yet by the knowledge that his father had only that day interviewed Mrs. Lawson. Both the young people had determined to assert their rights and to come to an understanding with their respective parents that very day. Margaret entered the library outwardly calm. Mother, may I speak to you a moment? It's really important. She was floundering badly and she realized it- May I-that is, Jack and I-we-- Margaret, Mrs. Lawson's manner was more bewil- dered than severe, you had much better go now and think calmly by yourself. VVhen you are more con- trolled it will be sufficient time for us to discuss this matter. She resumed her writing with an air of finality and Margaret retired with a sense of defeat. A I Over on the other porch jack walked uneasily up and down quite unconscious that he was disturb- ing his father's after' dinner nap. He had allowed his father to beat him three successive games of chess and that alone made him feel that victory might not be so unattainable. When Mr. Leonard at last seated himself in a shady spot with a newspaper, Jack approached him in a business like way. Father, just a moment, please,-we kno-w that you and Mrs. Lawson regard us as children, but we much desire- Mr. Leonard turned about and deliberately inspected Jack. Well, so you've come expecting to shake my re- solve-you and Margaret aren't old enough to express a ratio-nal opinion. Do not disturb me about that subject agarn please Jack beat a hasty retreat At four the young people met again They walked slowly up the dusty street each engaged in their own respective thoughts Jack mother thrnks that I have taken leave of my senses she won t even listen to me Jack mad meant to tell her of his own failure but her recital decided him Come on he said briefly quickenrng his pace Where? Margaret demanded breathlessly ,Tack faced her for an instant Margar t we are going to be married now Margaret gasped and then with flaming cheeks and head held high she marched bravely on It was the work of only a few min utes to make their errand known to the minister He demurred at first but both were of age and jack s straightforward story pleased him ln a short time he stood ready with the prayer book and motioned them to take their places before him Unconsciously Jack glanced out of tlee window and Leheld Mrs Lawson with his father advancing rapidly up the front walk He took in the situation at a glance and turning to the minister s wife exclaimed Vly father can t you hide us quick please An instant later saw both Margaret and ack safely concealed in the library wl 1le their parents were entering the parlor . 1 - - I9 , . .
