What a marked improvement there has been in the last fifty years . . . at least we think it is an improvement ...certainly a change at any rate. The first annuals were really nothing more than paper bound small books of poems and compositions. We ran across some hilarious poetry by Cliff McAfee in the 1913 edition satirizing the domestic science classes and their experiments in cooking. The jokes in any of the early editions would have sent any sour- puss into hysterics. Obviously the styles of those days struck us as being odd to say the least, but just as ours fit the fashions today so too theirs must have seemed normal to them. lt sur- prised us to find that photographs were used very little until 1920 and even then when snaps began to be used they were small and scarce because of the high cost of cuts. With the coming of lithography school annuals have become more pic- tures and fewer words, ours, ofcourse, included. We think its simply amazing when you get right down to it just how many technical improvements during the last half century have aided us in putting out this Golden Anniversary copy. Prob- ably in the year QOOO annuals will talk back at you and be exclusively in color but as things now stand we think this is a pretty good example of OUR times. Processes keep getting more complicated but we must be getting smarter too for we're still ahead of our deadlines. .1- Q! , l r!w .f -ef.. uf qi E , s V 4 .ft wry i- f 0 .1 BOARD OF TRUSTEES, left to right: Arthur S. Paula Sue doing a cool fifty, li Linda winning the Mammoth downhill. .,,a'1-.ski '- ,I The first dual meet of the season was with Lee Vining at Mammoth Mt. Bob Kin- mont was with the Olympic practice group at Sun Valley, but even without him the team turned in a pretty good showing. Linda particularly showed well, placing third in all times boys and girls. On Jan. 22 the group jour- neyed to Reno for the first S.N.l.S.F. get-together. Seven s c h o o l s were represented, best performance going to Tahoe-Truckee, Bishop com- ing in third. Linda again took top honors in both women's events, while Bob K. garnered one first and one second, hitting a gate wrong in the slalom. Denault did well in slalom, Rhubarb was even-steven in both while Grib was a shade better than either. Paula lost a ski in downhill but hustled back for a fourth in slalom, Kathie took a sixth in downhill. The weather was cold, the courses excellent and competition pretty keen with the top three boys and the two top girls all National contenders. Jill's tragic accident at Alta put a crimp in everyone's skiing for a while. Added to that, our association only scheduled one meet for the entire group which left us either the option of going 200 miles for small groups- rnostly cross-country and jumping or following the F.W.S.A. circuit. Since most of our' group were going to do that anyway this season-Bob K. has about a six- week tour mapped out on the Olympic tryouts and Linda has made the Nationals, we laid off the Tahoe trips. In the F.W.S.A. meet at Yosemite Kathie fell off an icy catwalk into the trees at about fifty miles an hour and broke one knee and the other leg near the hip. ln the S.N.l.S.F. final meet at Mammoth, Linda walked away with top honors for the girls-oh, yes, she came in 9th in the Jr. Nationals combined . . . All the rest at least walked away, which was something after Rhu- barb fell off the steilhung in the downhill, ending up far below minus skis! An enjoyable meet, but it didn't find us at our best. 1 lfsmx Xxx Q M. . The California Scholarship Federation has done very little to iustify itself this year in the Way of social events, BUT, it is pro- ducing a record number of Seal Bearers, five to be exact. Mem- bership ran a little higher per capita than usual moreover, with a large number of freshmen making the grade. Up to the time of going to press, the group had discussed the possibility of taking a week-end trip somewhere-probably Death Valley in April. Possibly they will have this to remember but it is prob- lematical at this writing. Let it never be said that the group didn't keep busy however. lt's just that their activities are not formalized in conjunction with this particular club, 4...A A- AL White. The Freshmen were brought into the spotlight at the Frosh assembly, a week later. Funny paper hats were made, and a few mad pranks were indulged in. On the whole, The Frosh got off easy. As we recall they didn't even have to wash egg and grease out of their hair. The Trona Rally found everyone bursting his lungs with shouts for victory. lAs was obvious to anyone who went down to the game, however, we were somewhat outclassedl Oct. 29 and 30 was our annual Halloween Party sponsored by the Rotary Club. There were games in the gym and the dance and door prize drawing ws held in the auditorium, with the usual prelude To the much enioyed parade and show. Sadie Hawkins Day revealed the Seniors sporting Dogpatch costumes, with girls carrying ropes, guns, and any device suitable to catch a man. Among those most suitably clothed, as you can see in the picture at the upper right, was Dee Ogden, who is shown just after she caught her man. Ins cluded in the celebration was a Sadie Hawkins Race. The climax of the holiday ended with a dance at Skunk Hollow. Shown in the pictures on the rest of the page are some of those who attended the dance, Lois Smith proudly prancing off with Paul Fischer, more intrigued with the affairs of the evening, the famed Senior Trio singing Here Comes the Bride, Dragging Her Groom, Marrying Sam lall in blackl swiftly uniting the hopefuls in Holy Matrimony. The serpentine and rally for the Homecoming game with Lone Pine brought out the fighting spirit of our school. After whirling through main street we returned to the football field for the annual Bon Fire and burning of the Lone Pine Man, Different classes and organizations made Homecoming displays. Shown in the top pictures of displays are five very interesting people, one of whom is the quite familiar Lone Pine Man. The next is a brave 'iEagle's grave. This was the first year we have ever had either displays or a Queen. The raving beauty, reigning over the celebration was Lani Palmer, Sophomore. On down the page we find the Queen and her attendants, lright to leftl Edith Decker, Frosh, Bonnie Horne, Soph, Lani Palmer, Queen, Jeannie Fal- coner, Jr., Judy Goolsby, Sr. ln the following cut we find Spoor and Baetge escorting Judy from the car. Outstanding in the bottom picture are the numerous alumni and students who attended the 'Homecoming Dance. TJQ, 4fZ 'f' JX ..., -.-T 1 ,A .Q What's this? Here again we see five interesting faces. These, as you can tell by the confetti, are at the Jr. Carnival. Other features of the night's entertainment were Marilyn Lucas, the Bearded Lady, Nancy Wright, Fortune Teller, also in the picture is Joanne Williams. No one got around to taking pictures of the dance after the Desert game or the Band dance. Actually, Diane shot some but can't find them, so you can decide for yourselves which dance fits the pictures at the right . . . At least, we did have the dances-enjoyed as usual by everyone. l Here we see another display and then the band performing at half-time, while the girls were introduced. The Jrs. entertained all with the annual Jr. Carnival with the gay theme of Circus Time. Nov, 20 was the long-awaited day. Shown in the middle picture are the renowned Bubble Dancers, Kathy Morrison, Gail Fiersitne, and Lani Palmer. Edith and Yvonne Decker missed the carnera. The next shot shows the gaily decorated gym with many familiar faces in the foreground. The bottom picture shows Mr. Jackson coyly peeking out of the ticket booth, complete with an outsize hat and derby. The total take, as usual, was quite sufficient to guarantee the Seniors of some- thing better than hamburger later on. Several thousand prizes were given out. . 5 -1 Q I The Christmas program coincided with the total breakdown ofthe school camera lMike Bishop had it in an auto wreckl and what pics. it produced were out ot focus except for one of the Boys' Chorus which is on the music page. The program was music only this year and showed off nicely the biggest band yet in the school's history. The editors felt that the Christmas program really needed some dramatics but since the school has had none tor several years it was absent once again. Possibly the Drama Club will produce something later this year. M 'Ay -1 T Au . G e e?- , K X K 4- -r 'sf 7 X, XX The clnnuol Senior Boll wos held Feb. 25Th wiTh The Theme of Pc1inT The Town Pink.
