However a key hit or play in a few of their close losses would have enabled them to win the league crown, but the clutch hitting was not there. Frank Cipriani and George Gegen- furtner earned themselves a spot on the All-Catholic Team forthe second year by posting 361 and 474 batting averages respectively. Cipriani played center held and won many a game on his long ball hitting. Gegenfurtner though not as spectacular was just as consistant at short- stop. The Tiger's initial effort against St. Joe's was spoiled as they dropped a 3-2 decision. Bob Miller, though tagged with the defeat, struck out eleven while at the plate George Gegenfurtner got two hits. At Delaware Park it was a different story when Timon downed Cani- sius 3-1 behind the brilliant pitching of Chuck Fest who posted a 3 hitter. Larry Carr was the big otfensive star for Timon slamming 2 hits in 3 times at bat. Ken Crosson's single with 2 out in the bottom of the 8th enabled The Tigers to salvage a 3-2 victory over Ryan at Caz. Larry Carr again had the big bat as he managed 3 hits while Cipriani tripled in the fifth to tie the score and set up Crosson for his game winning hit. SEBALL 54. 'Y 15 '. 'lf K ' 1 4 l ' . Having to contend with a complete lack of experience and a lack of height this year's Junior Varsity was pitted against some of the most outstanding .l.V.'s that the Catholic League of Buffalo has ever seen. Averaging well under six feet and in some cases giving as many as 5 or 6 inches to teams like St, Joe's and Canisius, the Junior Varsity had to substitute ball control and hustle and in many cases this was not enough as they would be soundly beaten in rebounding by their taller opponents. Despite their handicaps the team did manage a respectable 8 won l0 loss record. G. Bakalik and Bob Forsythe were not only the high scorers for the team but were the men who time and time again rose to the occasion on defense as well to lead their teammates to victory. J .V. -11 fl A 2-run squeeze play in the top of the seventh decided the Fallon game in favor of the Bengals, 7-5. Once again it was Frank Cipriani who led the Timon assault with 3 hits while Ken Crosson and George Gegenfurtner had two apiece. In the last game of the first round, Timon downed Duffy 5-0, as Chuck Fest notched his third straight win. Ken Crosson, Brian Guest and Cip evenly divided six hits. At the end of the first round, it appeared as though Timon was on its way to a second straight title, having compiled a 4-l record. However, their attack bogged down in the second round as they won two of five games. At St. .loe's field the Tigers avenged their only previous loss by coming from behind to win. 3-2. Bob Miller also reversed an earlier loss to St. Joe's as he twirled a three hitter, while striking out 410, despite some sloppy fielding by his teammates. Bill Deegan and Cip each had 3 hits. Ryan nipped the Bengals 3-2 at Houghton Park, in what proved to be the turning point of the season. Timon out hit Ryan, but the inability to hit in the clutch and some defensive lapses lost the game. George Gegen- furnter and Len Kalinowski, with 3 and 2 hits respec- tively, spearheaded the Timon attack. At Caz. Timon succumbed to Canisius 1-0, before the one hit pitching of Al Cooper. Charlie Fest, after a shaky start, settled down to pitch steady ball, but his team mates failed to reach Cooper. Timon lost a scoring chance in the last inning as poor base running and Cooper's clutch pitching permanently shut the door to victory. ',.x',Vp.-. ' THEY FURTHERED ..
