as My ws ls'- ln league play Timon compiled a record of 5-7, with many of the losses coming in the nnal minutes of play. The first two league games proved disastrous as the co- favorites, Canisius and Baker-Victory scored consecutive wins. However the one bright spot even in defeat was the emergence of John Mann as a future All-Catholic. Dan Donoyan led the way in the victory over St. Joe's with l7 points. ln the Duffy game John Mann notched Timon's high individual score for the season when he scored 25 points. Without a doubt the big moment of the season came in Timon's second encounter with Canisius. After having been soundly beaten in the first game the Bengals showed real hustle and a desire to win when they handed the league leaders their first setback of the season. lt was a team victory but the outstanding play ofJim Malinowski and Dan Donovan on both defense and offense proved to be the difference and they held Dick Meyer. the Cani- sius high scorer. scoreless from the floor. The remainder of the second round followed the pat- tern ofthe first round as Timon lost to the stronger Ryan. Fallon and Baker while they were registering wins over the weaker St. .Ioe's and Duffy. ,f All Jim .xllIlflI0lt'.llv'f lll.l',Y um' in :luring lflr' ill. Ci!II'II1l'lAf'!1HlL'. Palana maps our the slralegy during a lime our. 44 Although the Tigers muddled through a mediocre sea- son of 9 wins and 9 losses. their hustle and spirit was to be commended. Being a team composed of mostly Sopho- mores and Juniors. they lacked the necessary experience to cope with some of the other seasoned teams. Often they were faced with a discouraging height problem where each man on the team would be out sized by his opponent, but they fought this with speed, hustle and drive. The team was molded around Captain John Mann. a senior All-Catholic guard. The smallest man on the team. what John lacked in size. he made up for with speed. drive and all around ball handling. He averaged l6.0 points a game to lead the Tiger's offensive etTorts. Coach Mel Palano also unveiled quite a few promising prospects. Having to contend with a complete lack of experience and a lack of height this year's Junior Varsity was pitted against some of the most outstanding .l.V.'s that the Catholic League of Buffalo has ever seen. Averaging well under six feet and in some cases giving as many as 5 or 6 inches to teams like St, Joe's and Canisius, the Junior Varsity had to substitute ball control and hustle and in many cases this was not enough as they would be soundly beaten in rebounding by their taller opponents. Despite their handicaps the team did manage a respectable 8 won l0 loss record. G. Bakalik and Bob Forsythe were not only the high scorers for the team but were the men who time and time again rose to the occasion on defense as well to lead their teammates to victory. J .V.
