The Timon Hockey team, under the faithful coaching of.loe Collern and its moderator, Fr. Paschal. completed the 59-60 season with a mediocre but fast improving 8-12-3 record. The carefully chosen sixteen who made the team, with Vinney Shipe as their captain, began practice in Sep- tember at Stamfor, Ontario. They practiced there once a week until Fort Erie's Arena opened in November, where they played most of their games. Since re-entering the league three years ago, this year's team was by far the best. lt started out with a tremendous surge of energy which brought it quickly up to first place, with only five games of the twenty three game schedule played. However, as the season progressed, the inexperience of the team caught up with them as they lost a series of heartbreakers by one and two goals. Without a doubt the bright spot of Timon's athletic endeavors came not in one ofthe major sports but in one of the so called minor sports-namely the 1959 Cross Country team. This supposedly was the year that Timon was weak on manpower, but what they lacked in man- power they made up for in determination and guts. Rely- ing on their past performances alone they were supposed to breeze by the weaker teams in the league, but Fallon and St. Joe's both had, on paper, the teams that could end Timon's superiority. But as happens so many times pre-season predictions proved so much talk. Timon took on St. Joe's and knowing this was the big one the harriers gave it everything they had and this was enough to edge Fallon by live points. With one giant down they encountered St. .loe's and again these unsung heroes were up for the race and they came through in the clutch. In going another year undefeated Timon extended its win- ning streak to 44 straight meets. They have never been beaten since the day they entered this sport. The records do not show it but undoubtedly this is something of a high school record. Much ofthe credit for this fine show- ing must of necessity go to the Coach, Mr. Palano. Be- sides showing the boys how to run he has year after year been able to instill in his teams a great desire to win. And many times it has been this desire rather than mere ability that has proved to be the difference in a close meet.
