Dan Danahy pulls down Ray Paske of St. Joe's as Murry Regan streaks to assist him. Ea' Hennigan of Timon gets the frst shot at a Canisius back as an unidentU'ied player moves in to help out. 38 ST. JOE'S 13-TIMON 0 With only three weeks of practice under their belts, the Tigers undertook a herculean task when they encoun- tered St. Joe's at Civic Stadium, who at the time were riding high on the crest of a 25 game winning streak. These were the champions, and no one had to remind the Tigers of this. On a perfect day for football, Coach Gene O'Connor's inexperienced Tigers clashed head on with The Champs. For three quarters the tenacious Tigers and the Marauders fought to a standstill. In the fourth quarter the experience of St. Joe's paid oh' as they pushed across two touch- downs. The linework of Dave Ernst, George Syzamanski, Dick Zazada and Ted Overdorf was outstanding. The Tiger's defensive unit played brilliantly. ln the Tiger backfield Jack Horner, playing his first varsity game, was also a standout. OF THE SCHOOL, VALIANTLY . . CANISIUS 7-TIMON 0 After playing such an outstanding first game the Tigers suffered a slight let down for the second game. On the other hand, Canisius was fired up for the game against their Southside rivals. The Crusaders managed to engi- neer only one sustained drive all day but they made it count when they pushed over from the Timon two-yard line on a fourth down and goal-to-go situation. Almost the entire game was played in Canisius terri- tory. Four times the Tiger attack stalled inside the 20- yard line. The Tigers just could not seem to come up with the big play when they needed it and were contin- ually hampered by penalties. Once again the interior line play of the Southsiders drew praise. Even though-they were upset and had yet to score the Tigers' spirit remained high as they set their sights on the Duffy game.

f Av As you read the account of the l959 season in the following pages you will of necessity wonder how a team that has lost three straight games could come back and win the next four in succession. The answer to that is simple. the team knew they were better than the record of their first three games indicated. Being possessed of the right outlook. that the past is past and it is the future that counts. they went on to prove themselves. It is easy to be proud ofa winning team. but you can be doubly proud of a team that has been counted out of the race but yet picks itself up from the grime of defeat and proves its real worth. No better compliments can be paid a high school student than the fact that he has now become a man and the 1959 Varsity Football Team of Timon be- came men by the courage and the desire they showed on the football field. A good man-a real man--can never be held down. Thishne turnout of Tirnonfans at the St. Joe's game gave evidence to the fact that the spirit among the rooters was as high as the spirit among the team. CARRIED THE COLORS . . J. Ryan, Mgr. J. DUFFY 6-TIMON 0 The meeting of the Timon and DulTy gridders proved to be mostly a defensive battle for both teams. Although the Southsiders gave the fans an excellent exhibition of football, the boys from Duffy in the end emerged vic- torious over the Tigers. This was the third setback in a row for Timon's eleven. Duffy scored when their quarterback, Joe Ryan, com- pleted a pass to John Jaconelli on the ten and he ran the remaining distance for the lone and winning TD of the day. Although Timon penetrated deeply into the Duffy zone, they failed to hit pay dirt for the third straight game. The game was a hard fought one but DufTy's vic- tory proved that they received the opportunity and took .l? advantage of it. The sight of Johnny Mann clearing Dougherty's end became a familiar sight just as he is shown here picking up big yardage. ..!- ,na ' ,V -.IAS - 49-s-5-':'a4b.'ff ,5,ig, ' Jlkvff' -.M lui 'Mo .A 5'-PK:-.N ' I-as . -Ni... On a very windy fall afternoon Timon smothered the new entry into the league, Cardinal Dougherty, by a score of 34-O to break their winless streak. Early in the game with the help of the hard running of Jack Horner and Lenny Kalinowski Timon worked the ball down to the opposition's 16-yard line. From there Kalinowski lugged the ball for a touchdown and the first score of the game and of the season. The extra point was made and Timon led 7-0. From this point on Timon's offense shifted into high gear but the defensive team too was practically impreg- nable to any oilensive maneuvers the young Dougherty team tried. The fine passing of Joe Kerber accounted for another score in the second quarter. Starting the second half with a 13 point bulge the Tigers turned loose their runners Jim Bieger, John Man and Dale DelBello for 21 more points. The hurt of the first three games was lessened in the general atmosphere of victory.
