The Nautical Left: ORDERS FOR THE CREW . . . megaphoned by Coach Joe Schawillie as the crew prepares to launch the eight from the dock at the West Side Rowing Club. Left, center: A BREATHER . . . for sweating oarsmen on a practice run over the course of Black Rock Chan- nel. Three or four miles a day form part of the training of the crew. Below: CHECK THAT GEAR! . . . Exactly what Tom Browne, 1950 captain Nick Smith, and Tommy Thompson do before shoving off for a workout. THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN PULLING AN OAR . . . Rowing is not so simple as it appears to onlookers on the shore watching a well-manned shell sweep through the water. Conditioning, work on the machines, .run- ning, calisthenics, instructions on the how-to-do-it are all part of the sport. It is not a fairweather sport, for regattas are held in all kinds of weather and training begins, sometimes, while ice still Hows in small chunks along Black Rock Channel. Rowing is for the hardy.
