' ' .u l ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY N l955 we entered upon a new adventure, in a sense comparable to Columbus of the past or the first human to be shot into space. But, unlike these, we had guides to set up a pattern to show us the way. As we registered at Bishop Ryan High School, the Francis- can Fathers welcomed us with all the warmth and Christian love of St. Francis himself. Now in I959, as we part with these dedicated men, both religious and lay faculty members, we begin to realize that we have learned much from our associa- tion with them. 'l'hev have instilled in us deep roots of Christian charity and an unshakable knowledge of our Faith, besides the scholastic sciences and arts. lt is, therefore, with devoted pride that we salute the faculty and the administrative leaders who appoint our faculty members. i it Fr. Ferdinand, principal, introduced Mr. Joseph Augustine of the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild at one of the first assemblies of the first semester. E THE class of 1959 w ho have climbed the gantry and are now poised to be sprung loose from the launching stage are not without some degree of nostalgia We who have entered Bishop Ryan High School as freshmen to Find so many strange and new facets, now grieve at the thought of missing the many friends with whom we have become familiar We shall long remember the happy times spent acquiring new knowledge and helping each other through difficult stages. We are also thankful for the models of liv- ing and the aid in the application of our newly acquired knowledge Now, as we are about to enter the Space Age we know that we shall not falter, for like fine precision parts, we have been handcarved and tooled from the molds of the best of the past into the citizens of tomorrow. 14 CLASSES AND DEPARTMENTS X 5 I jf I X ,Q Z9 Mfr ff Sf V E JAMES V. Other forms of intellectual enrich- ment, such as social contact with others and individual research and experimentation, are also essential to the development of a well-rounded personality. This desire to educate a diversified man has been the basis for all extra-curricular activities made available at Bishop Ryan. By providing the student with a variety of clubs, the school gives him an opportunity to learn things which cannot come from a teacher's lecture in the classroom. These clubs are both secular and spiritual in purpose, for it is realized that each one needs both types to complement his personality and to cor- relate them wisely with the plans and will of God. It develops fast thinking and enthusiastic competition. It also stresses good sports- manship and fair play not only among players but spec- tators too. XVith these principles in mind the Rams have excelled on and off court. In basketball, bowling and base- ball, they became Champions of their respective leagues. They have also compiled an impressive record in football. Along with the Varsity sports, ,lay Vee, Freshman, and Intramural teams help to give the Ryan student a pattern to live-play the game as best you can, take your victory in stride, but don't let defeat keep you down. J. VVisner, captain of the Foxy Five, accepts the trophy for the co-champ- ions of the Bishop Burke Division. Listed among the davids who would not be able to slay the Ugoliathsf' Coach J. Niland and his assistant, F. Signorelli, had the Foxy Five work the man to man with the per- fection of a college team. Sporting a well-balanced offense the Rams turned out to be not only spoilers but pace-setters. Soon enough they asserted themselves as contenders for the division title for the first time since the league began in 1948. Adding one victim after another on the home court, including both co-favorites Bp. Timon and St. Joseph C.l., gave them the impetus needed for the race that went down to the wire, almost ending in a triple tie. They reached the Manhattan Cup play-off finals in illemorial Auditorium before bowing to St. Joseph C.I. The flu had a hand in the defeat. Both R. Torgalski and H. Belote entered the game suffering the effects of a fiu attack. Captain J. VVisner, who was voted most valuable player, was chosen with team- mate R. Torgalski to the play-off all-star team. Bobby was also an all-Catholic nomination for the Buffalo Evening News and Courier Express. R. Plezia made the second teamg VVisner received honorable mention. The Rams finished the season with a I4-4 record, best in the schoolls history. They led the league in defense 42.5 per game. BASKETBALL SCORES R. Torgalski is poised for another two points, as I.
