The Way Gut Program The Way Out Program is now in its second year. It has grown considerably and is divided into four major phases: PHASE I A study of the basic psychology of man, with emphasis on those traits we all have in common, while also viewing the specific differences that make people individuals. Topics covered are Defensive Mechanisms, Emotions, the Decision Making Process etc. PHASE ll A study of the basic communication skills available to man. This phase in- creases those skills we all possess, but sometimes are not aware of: listening as opposed to hearing, communicating as opposed to talking, etc. PHASE 3 ln the setting of group discussions, the areas studied are applied to the real situations of all members in the group. Although the latest facts about drugs are also discussed, the basic aim of the program is human communications, which is developed in these discussions. PHASE 4 Those students interested in continuing the program are then involved in training discussion groups wherein the techniques and methods they have been exposed to are carefully studied. The aim is to have these interested students continue in the program as Discussion Leaders with other students, under the overall supervision of trained faculty members. The program is presently comprised of over a hundred Freshmen and Sopho- mores, respectively, and over twenty Juniors and Seniors, respectively. The staff consists of the Director, Mike Taylor, four faculty members and ten juniors plus ten seniors CDiscussion Leadersj who have been trained in these skills. The other sections of the program are an adult education program for inter- ested parents of Reilly students and a training workshop for interested mem- bers of the faculty. The confidential nature of the program insures honest discussions, and al- lows the students to freely discuss any topic without fear of repraisals and the like. The programs firm stand on drug abuse is Drugs are not a problem, but the symptom of a problem. This foundation leads the program to concentrate on the individual as a human being, and developing a person's potential, self awareness and the awareness of his surroundings as the goal of the program. The decision to abuse drugs is a personal decision for each person. If the goals of the program are met, a person will be in a better position to make a better decision about drug abuse. As often repeated throughout the program, We emphasize not what you do, but why you do it. The Director, Michael M. Taylor, has been involved with the drug scene since 1964. His involvement started when Daytop Village first opened in Staten ls- land. Since that time, he has been a consultant to various narcotic rehabilitation programs. Presently, he is licensed Trainer for the State of New York, and con- sultant for the Diocese of Brooklyn on Drug Education and Prevention, and has been active in running prevention workshops for other schools, with the help of various members of the Way Out Program. The forecast for next year: Communication is contagious, positively.
