After another glorious Spirit the ASB seemed to have acquired a whole new wardrobe to show their Dragon pride. The Student Life Center has been remodeled and is now asthetically pleasing. The ASB introduced the weather, news, sports and other updates during daily announcements. These seniors help keep religion and spirituali on the busy minds of students. The tactics they use are clever and interesting. CMT is in charge ofthe liturgies and chari Q drives that take place at the school. The CMT creates skits that relate to the theme of the liturgy and manage to be meanirr W ful and humorous at the same time. The charity drives run by the CMT remind students of how fortunate we really are and how generous we should be. The CMT is a group of talented, in their spiritual journeys. The club consists of over 100 members, but members do NOT have to be Asian, only appreciate the Asian culture. ASA continues to dominate Multi-Cultural Week and hosts at least one event a month. The club while titled Black Student Union, is actually made up of different ethnicities. All the memebers consider the BSU a family and they act as one too. I in fi.. The Bishop O'Dowd Book Club is a group of thirty students who meet once a month to discuss literature. Christopher Joh son, Sarah Fong, and Anna Cavagnaro head this student-run club. Each meeting consists oflively discussion, snacks, and voting for the next selection. The Book Club reads an assortment of books from classics to modern literature and the discu sion varies from personal connections to literary analysis. Students are given the opportunity to interpret and express their ideas on literature in an environment where their opinions are valued. Led by Ms. Sussman and meeting two mornings each week before school, the class is a little over a semester long and gives students credit for a regular govemment class. This year's case, People v. Palmer, is the trial of a Hollywood stunt-person, Alex Palmer, who is charged with the murder of her fonner firend Jes Markson. There was also a pre-trial argument on ll whether a Memory Mapping test should be admitted. Students assume courtroom positions such as lawyers and witnesses in this simulated trial, and compete against other schools. In order to prepare for this special position, they had to submit applications and go through work- shops. Members enjoy days of skiing and snowboarding down the slopes at ski resorts such as Northstar and Bear Valley, and maybe even witnessing senior Hunter Mitchell perform back flips in the terrain parks. Run by Mr. Amundson, the Math Club competes in inter-school challenges with other high schools. This year, thanks to club president Max Burtner, the mathletes designed special math club polo shirts using clever math symbols. The math club also spon- sors other math challenges at the school such as the American Math Challenge. Monthly meetings for the Math Club consist of practice for mathlete competitions. lt may sound like it is all Work for the mathletes, but do not be deceived: they have been known to see math movies and do other creative math activities. 54 Ryan and Sean are thumbs up after winning their debate. Also known as the Speech and Debate Club, the Debate Team has been honing their analyti- cal and speaking skills almost every day after school and during MPs. Participating in the club meant being able to advocate for both sides of an issue, articulate ideas clearly, and think on one's feet. Needless to say, Mr. Thorpe was very proud of their awards in the Golden Gate Speech Association tournaments where the team brought home a total of seven trophies! Every year, just before the Winter Ball, Esoterikos hosts the annual Winter Ball Poetry Contest, which allows poets to compete for two tickets to the Winter Ball. The Muse is primarily poetry, although it also has a section for art and photography and another section for short stories. Overall, The Muse it is a big hit with the students. This year the varsity volleyball team went undefeated in their league season and beat archrivals, Campolindo High School for the first time in over 17 years. The team was successful in league play and took it all the way to NCS. With great new additions as well as a strong returning squad the cross-country team was destined for greatness. Seven of O,Dowd's runners were selected for the HAAL all-league team. The Cross-Country team flourished this year with the return of Coach Hubble. His leadership proved to be just what was necessary to pull the team out of the two-year rut the loss of the Kelly boys in '06 had put it in. The cross-country team is a tightly bonded group of students who support each other throughout long meets. This year, the team was extremely successful, losing only one of their games. He is one of the co-captains of the varsity team, plays both long pole defense and midfield, and has been called the team's most athletic de- fender by his coach, Tyler Kreitz. Graduating from San Jose State University with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, he started out at O'Dowd as a P.E. teacher and baseball coach. He has since taught Geo-History, directed cafeteria affairs, and coached both baseball and golf successfully. His teams have Won numerous championships, and several of his former players have gone on to college and professional sports careers. His presence in the golf program has been so appreciated that in 2004 the annual Rocket Roza Golf Tournament was created, which has raised thousands of dollars for O'Dowd sports programs.
