The council has enjoyed one of its most productive years which included new di- mensions in our Spirit Week, a Teacher Apprei- cation Week, the creation ofa new constition, and a unique and successful Christmas Ball. By sponsering such a drive, O'Dowd is helping the Blood Bank of the Alameda!Contra Costa Medical Association meet the needs of patients in the 33 hospitals in these countries. The Symphonic Band is for any student in any grade whom the Band has competed throughout the Bay Area in various competi- tions and competes annually in the California Music Educators The bands here at 0 Dowd are and have been taught and conducted by Leonard Rossi for the past live years. There are ii ve major bands at 0 'Dowdg they are Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Begin- ning Band, and Orchestra. Beginning Band usually consists of Fresh- men who are just learning to play a musical instrument, Concert Band is for musicians with one or more years experience. Association competition in February. This year the Symphonic Band is planning to go on tour through Carmel and Great Amer- ica. The Orchestra is for people who play a string instrument such as the violin cello viola or bass and who wish to play with a group. lt also participates in many competitions and perfor- mances. Finally there is the Bishop 0 Dowd Jazz Band which functions as a Public Relations Band. The seventh annual OTJoWd White water raft trips were the most challenging ever. Due to heavy snowfall during the winter, the runoff raised the river flow 6' times higher than any previous year. On Thursday, February 17, 500 juniors and seniors spent the day in mini-career seminars. Thirty- Hve guest speakers addressed students interested in their pro- fession, giving speeches and an- swering questions. The Council- ing Department and the Alumni Association combined their ef- forts to bring together members of the East Bay community, OUoWd alumni, and 0Dowd parents. Among the most notable were Mr. Robert Maynard, Edi- tor and Publisher of the Oakland Tribune, and the Honorable Lio- nel J. Wilson, Mayor of Oakland. On February 22, 1983, Robert Cleary of Hagan is Heroes fame spoke to the students of O'Dowd about his personal experiences in Nazi concentration camps. The students were very attentive and had plenty of questions for Mr. Cleary. Mr. Cleary also spoke to select students in small groups throughout the dayg all in his efforts to not let the new generation forget the horrors of Nazi Germany. Ah. I ': The second annual ODoWd Jag-a-thon was held on April 13, 1983. One hun- dred and sixty students and several fac- ulty members ran, jagged, or walked for one hour. All the runners received a free t-shirt provided by the Shoong Foundation. Afterwards the runners were treated to free sandwiches and drinks, with food being donated by Co- lombo Bakery, Lucca Delicatessen, Mr. Greg Diamanti, and Mr. Wayne Bauer.
