'V' Welcome to the Mitre Estate's Athletic Grounds. These are used year-round by our residents for fun and competition. We have countless organized teams functioning in almost every sport desireable. You'll see more facilities and residents playing as we move closer to the mansion. X-coU TRY Bishop O'Dowd wins GCAL Cross Country Championship This headline has been used many times. Colleen Scannell, a freshman was tops in the league. She proved this by setting record after record. The girls toughest competition, suprisingly, came from a spirited Carondolet team. Pat Gonsalves falways a steady performerl, Katie French fwarding off a leg injuryl, Barbara Ward lwith a pleasantly suprising finish at the league meetl, and Deidre Duffy comprised a team able to out-run any opponent. The mens' varsity season was plagued by injuries. The varsity consisted of five members, four which were injured. Chuck Maroney, O'Dowds' premier runner, was out with a pulled hamstring muscle. Stu Gruendl had a viral infection and could not spark the team with his running ability and enthusiasm. Tom Gouveia had foot prob- lems, and Kevin Lindorfer struggled through the season with re- curring knee problems. A second place finish with 4l5 of your varsity team injured, is a phenomenal accomplishment. The J.V., led by Mike Cooke, and the novice teams also finished second. Pat Scannell, the remaining 1x5 of the team, emerged as the top runner in the CAL. In looking back, Pat let it be known that he Was depressed because my rival iChuck Maroneyb was injured and I didn't get a chance to beat him. Pat was chosen as Prep of the Week by the Hayward Daily Review and he is expected to make the All East Bay team for the second consecutive year. Mr. Ed Olkowski has been said to be the best coach in the league . His coaching style demands everything from a runner. And so coach O fields a team with excellent ability and encouraging determination.
