Donovan, Superintendent of Schools His Excellency, The Most Reverend Floyd L. Begin, Bishop of Oakland if uf- . ... '- ' , :pb , f f, 2, From the Principal, Very Rev. Frank Wagner, O.M.I. During the past school year we have all worked together because we are concerned about the best development of the student of Bishop O'Dowd High School as a lady or gentleman imbued with an intelligent understanding of Christian principles and a consequent practice of these ideals. lt is for this reason that the school exists. It is for this reason that teachers dedicate themselves to their vocation and that parents make the sacrifices which they do, Presumably, it is for this same reason that students attend this school. The entire curriculum and the varied extracurricular program of the school is geared to fulfill ' f' 'f V iiai Jzftmawd the beginning of a long- awaited program -- football. As we all work together, this program will develop into a wonderful reality. Working together as a school to make this program successful is in itself something of great significance. In these days when it is fashionable for people to do their own thing without considering the consequences, it is refreshing to see people working together towards the common goal of this school. This common effort will not only produce a successful conclusion to school life but, if continued throughout life, will result in happiness in life as well as in eternity. .,...g-,ww---w---...,,..,w' , 'Q:4'w5- - ' ..-A-4.4--rf 415: nf-funuuunsmunmw-u4,,,g M--................N 'f'-'ff - I incipal -H 'ii D' FD -. LEWIS CARROLL Spirit Week Sophomores triumph in a Spirit Week spectacular of Southern strategy, Iii The year was dedicated to spirit 4 1 O'Dowd's first Spirit Year was established in November of 1969 with the annual Spirit Week activities. Victorious in keen competition was the Class of '72, aboard its show- boat, the Southern Comfort. The junior let Set staged an exciting and successful jet take-off to launch a year of spirit. The Frosh kicked in their share with the aid of a super human football player. The Class of 1970, not to be outdone, built a life-size train and christened it the B 81 O Railroad . The week was a terrific success and pre- viewed an enthusiasm which was to remain throughout the year. The year brought awareness NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY WEEK was observed on campus with two as- semblies, individual reports in classes, posters, and an African art exhibit. Mrs. Electra Price, twice a candidate for the Oakland School Board, spoke at one of the two assemblies which concluded the week's activities. The choir of Oakland Technical High School appeared at both the upper- class and lowerclass assemblies, singing a group of spirituals which included Amen and the Edwin Hawkins Singer's I Hear the Voice. Eric Bailey and Muriel McCoy were the chairmen of the students who prepared the week's events. Mr. Brad Goodhart was faculty moderator. Student body president Charles Harris acted as master of ceremonies for the assemblies which climaxed black ex- perience week. Performances on Congo drums by Oakland Tech's james jackson and Ricardo Mitchell pre- ceded an address by Mrs. Electra Price, who was introduced by Richard Humphrey at the assembly for seniors andjuniors. Mrs. Price congratulated the black students of the school on the success of their efforts and expressed the hope that the week's events would turn out to be not isolated, token demonstra- tions of the black past, but would be followed by continuous manifestations She also said that she looks forward to the day when such efforts as Black History Week would be made un- necessary by unity of blacks and whites in mutual appreciation and respect. The student body president of Oak- land Tech, a member of the choir, expressed pleasure at the opportunity to sing at Bishop O'Dowd. Vicki Manning, a sophomore, per- formed an original Afro Dance. She said her choreography was patterned after movements she had seen exec- uted by African Dancers. . The program concluded with a poetry reading and some closing remarks by lohn Broussard, followed by singing ofthe Black National Anthem. Posters throughout the school pre- sented selections of black history. The administration . building showcase housed a display of African artifacts contributed by Mr.-David Sullivan and by Miss Barbara Beach. . The next day against St. Mary's the Dragon Five were upset in a game that probably had the dullest third quarter in the history of basketball as the score indicates: 29-30. ln the rematch, the Panthers tried playing basketball which proved devastating for they played a better team. As clearly seen on the clock tbelowl, O'Dowd proved themselves to be the undisputed champions: 57-54. They also proved themselves in the stands, winningthe Spirit Trophy, ln the TOC, the Dragons secured third place. They upset Redwood, third in Northern California, 71-63, but Couldn't get by Wilson of San Francisco. The high- light of the TOC, however, was un- doubtedly the Dragon victory over Oak- land rivals, the Castlemont Knights, despite loss of guard Pete Roberts. This win placed O'Dowd only behind Wilson and the Berkeley powerhouse. WL :XL X mai...- .ww vm- ,.... ...P aw' ww 'I ,-L xv I66 IK? TK ' UA and T. O. C. V.'s and Varsity Take Second and Third An undefeated season Q10-01 for Notre Dame hurled the Dragon ladies into third place in Girls' Catholic Athletic League Volley Ball. One of the highlights of the Varsity 6-0 season occurred at St. Vincent's in Vallejo when Sue Rossi and jean Duenas were named un- contestable All-Stars, The 1.V.'s had truly earned their second-from-the- top slot by defeating St. Vincent's in the play-offs. Second place seemed to be this year's home for the young ladies, for they secured that spot also in the St. Elizabeth Tourna- ment--in which leri Keith and Marilyn Wilcher were named All-Stars. 4 5 ,A 5 lrwierr' D-'L Miss Myrtle Baker Coach VARSITY: tl. to r. standingl Chris Dempster, Loretta Magnani, Vickie Duenas, Suzanne Rossi, jean Duenas. tl. to r. kneelingl Rachele Cappuc- cio, Denny Wong, Trish Freitas, Nancy Negri, lmissing, Pat Schneider and Ruth Quirkl. 1' IUNIOR VARSITY: ll, to r. standingl Millie Schomrner, Della Ham- lin, Lenore Kenny, Laurie Eggers, janet Lyrac, Cathy Connolly. ll. to r. kneelingl Marilyn Wilcher, Ellen Corbett, Debbie Savage, Chris Conlaxis, Rosanna Alcala, tmissing,1eri Keith and Barbara Kinsellal IB4 S' N - ,D f LJ 4 185 'Q Qu CU 'O-J CD Q4 fu ' 2 J I O yy 'ES ff A . As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clear- ly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant: they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achieve- ments as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real pos- session in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cyn- ical about love, for in the face of all aridity and dis- enchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kind- ly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not dis- tress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a whole- some discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the uni- verse is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with C-od, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. FOUND IN OLD SAINT PAUL'S CHURCH, BALTIMORE, DATED T692 S ll W CHARLES P. In a depersonalized and automated world the loss of the human spirit has been prevalent. Th us we did not seek the knowledge of books as one looks for a part to improve his car, but rather as human people striving to complement the new experience of responsibility and commitment with the necessary learning. As Seniors, we trust we have led the school in this way, for this above all else is truly needed in today's world. THE CLASS OF1970 Change is an ancient rhythm. Its idea is reflectedina sun- rise, in the seasons, in time itself, in everything. For man not to change as is necessitated by the times is to con- tradict his very nature. Unfortunately, the idea of chan ge seems to be relative to each person's own reality. Every- one would concur that change must happen, but few would admit the change should be radical -- even, and especially, when the situation demands that very kind of change. lronically, those who prevent radical change do so, they say, for the benefit of the people, but in actuality they deter the progress and maturity of man. Until these people will admit to other realities besides their own, until these people cast away their prejudices and fears, until these people treat all men in the same way-- no matter what their religious belief, their political conviction, their ideology, nationality, or color -- until that time, this world, and in particular this country, will never be a great people or even a civilized community. As we become part of the upper division syndrome in Septem- ber, we shall always remember the Class of 'I970 as a class to be emulated. Though their efforts will be difficult to surpass we look with eagerness toward these next two years in which time we will be able to demonstrate our own great efforts and the fullest extent of our abilities. THE CLASS OF 1972 i , u 1 l i Our country, in fact the entire world, is currently in a state of confusion and is greatly concerned over social and political affairs. These things are evidenced most strongly on our high school and college campuses. Stu- dents in all places are groping desperately for the answers to the many problems our changing world presents to us. At Bishop O'Dowd the situation is most similar. As Fresh- men, we are somewhat bewildered by the workings of our school and community. Because of our inexperience, we must look toward the upperclassmen, alumni, and faculty to guide us. We have only the work of our pred- ecessors to build on. Our goal in the next three years is not to settle for how great O'Dowd is now, but to strive to make it as great as we know it can be, THE CLASS OF 1973 I A THE 0 U vouR Hosts ANDY TONY MIKE E :V 'Mu sg-11 . -' e ' ' ,:,: i fl ll ll' ' l' A H 1 . My knowledge of things is certainly most limited: Since my state has never been one of poverty, my experience of the human condition is only vicarious, Neither has my state ever been one of prosper hence my experience in the arts is only dilettantish.
