V- -I in Wiarwuana JOH F. KENNEDY In Memoriam John Fitzgerald Kennedys legacy to the brotherhood of man will unfold, as Lincoln's did, with the passing of time. The ennobling influence of his vibrant life and tragic death has reached around the world already. Our youngest elected President had but three short years in office. But in that time he presented to the world an indelible picture of America as a youthful, vital and steadfast nation. His idealism inspired us all in the struggle for a better world and a more just society. He enhanced respect, in ourselves and in each other, for individual excellence, and he heightened our determination to elevate the quality of American life. His unrelenting search for the wellsprings of wisdom accentuated our interest in philosophers, poets and statesmen. A man of peace, he knew that world order was possible only if strong nations respected the weak and exercisedpower both with courage and restraint. He taught us that the family of nations must understand each other's institutions, history and national differences. He dedicated himself to the public service, and inspired his fellow men to put the good of the community first. By the example of his life john F. Kennedy still lives in our quest for justice and equality and excellence and brotherhood. Sincerely Lyndon B. johnson LYNDON B. None thought that O'Dowd would be first in C.A.L. history to win both the Round Robin and the playoffs. Everyone predicted that The '65 Dragon was to be the monster-but all were wrong. NOT only did O'Dowd beat arch-rival St, Elizabeth's Three Times but also brake the St. Mary's jinx by defeating the Panthers in the second outing. The whole reason for the Dragon success was team play. Dave Pouliot, the star center, was always in there for key rebounds, fine defense, and high scoring ability. Bob Price and Greg August both did a magnificent iob of handling the ball and making those necessary steals for The fast break. Don Johnson carne through when free throws and rebounds were needed in the clutch. Tom Newell with his fine defense, Barrett Pullman with his fine eye and rebounding ability and the ready reserves of McPhee, Traille, Cummins, and Pace contributed to a terrific season. Dave Pouliot Besides his vaulting board strength, Dave showed equal agility and versatility with his drives, fall-away shots, accurate jump shots and his many timely assists. Pouliot also held many an opposing center with Bob Price His net-splitting set-shot was more consistent and more accurate than that of any other member of the team. Bab was also an aggressive rebounder and determined team player. Awards: Most Inspirational Athlete C.A.L. Tom Newell Defensive play, set shots, hook shots, along with his determination, spirit and hustle played well in all the varsity. This experience has brought him a key role on the team. Award: East Bay Sportsmanship Award Bill McPhee When the going got rough, Bill could always be counted on to come through in a tight. spot either as a forward or as a guard. Bill has a good iump shot and plenty of team spirit, Barrett Pullman Barrett won himself o first string berth early in the season by his spirit and dedication, which was retlected in his allfaround hustle, his very accurate set shot and his aggressive rebounding, Ed Traille Ed showed great strength and agility under the boards in his var- sity games last year. He is an accurate shooter and can always be relied upon for his aggressive and competent play. Greg Pace Greg has been working hard and his rebounding ability along with his accurate jump shot is expected to be a shot in the arm to next year's Dragon team, Tim Cummins Tim, although short, has an excellent iump shot with a sharp eye, Having developed a good playmaking knack, Tim is confident that next season will be his big year. 139 5 f gi ax kyugzgywm f fi' ,fa 2? FRESHMAN BASKETBALL This year's freshman team gives every indication that Bishop O'Dowd will continue its tradition of fine basket- ball in the years to come, The season was highlighted by two tournament victories: the Berkeley Christmas Tournament and the Salesian Tournament. The entire team deserves high praise for compiling a 24-5 victory. Especially promising as future Dragon stars are Ron Santos, Mike Caruso, Doug Hudson, Mike McGuire and John Lizama. T43 Steve Dietrich Baseball Co-captain Barrett Pullman Baseball Co-captain ln athletic competition there is a need for a connecting link between the coaching statt and the team. However the proficiency of the team was shown by its 3rd place finish in the C.A,L. track meet, The problem which faced the team was not a lack ot quality but a lack of depth, for track meets are not won by firsts only, but also need to be backed-up with seconds and thirds. Many of these firsts were achieved by junior Larry Houps in the mile. Larry won his event in the C.A.L, meet and went all the way to the north coast finals. He also broke the school record turning in a 4.26 mile, Another Junior having a fine season was Tim Dennis who was however unable to run in the C.A.L. meet due to a leg iniury. Ron Edwards, also a iunior, was able to grab many points in the shot- put with putts over 48 feet. Among the seniors Rich Swartz pole- vaulted to new heights setting a new school record of 12'6 John Malcolm the best high jumper to come out ot O'Dowd in 7 or 8 years, came close to breaking a school record. John cleared 6 feet even, one inch below the record. Both John and Rick took second in the C.A.L. meet and went on to the North Coast Finals. Running the hurdles were Steve Maher and Bill Sullivan, lows and highs respectively. Both Steve and Bill placed high all year as well as third and second in that order in the C.A.L. However both were unable to compete in the North Coast sectionals due to in- iuries. The team also got much help from John Tomkins, Art Vanderbyle, Joe Rey- man and Warren Ogle.
