Contributing to this renaissance was the addition of our fine track, the introduction of the new tri-coaching system, and of course, a vastly im- proved team. Throughout the entire season our athletes showed intense desire which was exemplified by the many sterling performances by the cinder man. This year's squad, led by Mr. Averbuck, Mr. Grazzini and Father Keaveny, finished the year creditobly with many individual standouts, Mr. Averbuck's sprinters, although plagued by iniu- ries all season long, need not be rated as O'Dowd's weak point, O'Dowd seldom failed to place high in these short dashes. Tim Dennis, along with Steve Bett- valuable points in the century and 220, lglesias, a greatly improved sophomore, 440 in the low, 5O's. Another improved Bill Sullivan, who, along with Jerry Brito, cher, gained while Mario churned the sprinter was capped his share of first places in the high and low hurdles respectively. Father Keaveny, a student of scientific training, took over our distance men and soon found out that the old formulas of ability plus desire are always best. One can remember going over the results of the meets many times and seeing an O'Dowd sweep in the mile by Larry l-laups, Mike Morris and Terry Turner, three hard-working men who deserve any accolade heaped upon them. Also worthy of praise are Warren Ogle and Bob Banfield who merited praise for their performances in the half mile. A very strong point in the O'Dawd track machine is Mr. Grazzini's field event men. A great portion of O'Dowd's score came from these men. Leading the pack was muscle bound Capt. Ross Prusinovski who on sheer determination broke the school record in the shot put, a feat he was destined to achieve since his sophomore year. Jim Alves also showed great promise in the weight events. Rich Schwarz, a iunior, surpassed a record by vaulting to unbelievable heights while fighting off in- iury. George Spievogel ond John Malcom provided a 1-2 punch in the high lump while Steve Bettcher, Joe Abrille and Bill Sullivan leaped to placing distances in the broad iump. In the discus, Prusinovski, Tim McNa- mara and an improved John Rust heaved the disc with determination and high scoring distance. L. to R.: B. Sullivan, W. Ogle, T. Dennis, M. Iglesias, J. Dean, S. Art Vanderbyle was starring in the shotput while Don Pouliat was spinning the discus to good distances. In the pole vault, a Sophomore, Joe Reymann, was earning meet points, while Bill Jarvis was leaping over the bar to add to O'Dowd's total. Special recognition should go to Steve Maher, who contributed greatly to the O'Dowd cause by displaying his all around ability on the Dragon B team. Steve corn- peted and did well in the hurdles, sprints, the pole vault, the broad lump, and the re- lay. Through the whole year Steve packed up a total of 80 points to lead the B track- men. ln the distance runs Father Keaveny again came through with a gem in Freshman Paul Garcia. Starting out the season as an aver- age runner he finished off the campaign in extraordinary style as he broke the school record twice in the 1320. Only a Freshman, much is expected of him in the coming years. The sprinters were paced by speedy Soph Mike Shannon, who dashed to praiseworthy finishes in the 75. Others who contributed to point totals in the sprints were Denis Praske, Ed Peterson, Ron Leon, and Ed DeCoite. T38 The New Look did not stop at the varsity level. These performances were carried over to a fine group of B division athletes, who formed a well bal- anced team with many individual standouts. Led again by the triple coaching system these Juniors came out with a creditable season exemplary of in- tense desire and long hours of concentrated practice. Field Events, Standing: R. Siegfried, J.
