It’s 7:30 in the morning, and it’s black and it’s cold. The moon is still out, the stars are still out; the sun won’t be out for hours ... but WE’RE HERE! It’s 1974, and we’ve turned our clocks ahead one hour to save energy. Some of us make feeble attempts at sing¬ ing “By the light of the silvery moon” as the buses roll through the darkness. Some of us remember lines from poems: “In winter I get up at night” and “Look for me by moonlight. I’ll come to thee by moonlight . . But most of us can’t even remember our own names. We think maybe we have headaches, or sore throats; we’d better go to see the nurse, we’d better go home, we’d better go to sleeeeeeeep. January. 1974-DST 12 WE’RE HERE! ' 13 We’re here in our long-legged pants and our long-sleeved flannel shirts, in our sweaters on top of sweaters on top of turtle-neck shirts. We’re here in our coats and our mittens and our earmufls. It’s 1974, and we’ve turned our thermostats down to 68 degrees to save energy. The dress codes have been modified; and girls have changed their pleated uniform skirts for pants-suits and coordinated slack out¬ fits, while boys have changed their neck¬ ties for high turtlenecks they can pull up around their ears. And we’re still using up all our energy shiv-v-v-er-r-r-ing. ACADEMICS Open a new window, Open a new door, Travel a new highway That’s never been tried before . . . Some came in con¬ nection with various testing programs administered by the nurses; there were 110 TB tests, 550 eye and ear tests, and 46 Sickle Cell Anemia tests. Some came with burns and blisters, or fevers and rashes; some had fallen down the stairs, some up the stairs. Some had shut locker doors on fingers; and some had tom their pants. They study the Old Testament as a prepa¬ ration for the New Testament; they study the coming of Christ, the teachings of Christ, the beginnings of Christianity. Sophomores follow up this study with their study of the early fathers and doc¬ tors of the Church; the great councils, the great encyclicals, in their year of Church History. Juniors apply the teachings of the Church to their behavior, as they study Christian morality; and seniors at¬ tempt to find the place, the role, of the Christian in the complex world of today. Editor-in-Chief Kathy Skiba spent two weeks studying with one hundred forty young journalists from throughout the Midwest, and won a first place editor’s award. In order to produce a more professional newspaper. The Jour Noll staff strove for concise and objective news reporting, re¬ sponsible editorial comment, and a vari¬ ety of entertaining features. Among sev¬ eral innovations seen in The JourNoll this year were the “What’s What” and “Around and About” columns, movie and music reviews, and the classified ads placed by the students. Members are selected from juniors and seniors who rank in the upper one- third of their class scholastically and who, in the opinion of faculty members, have shown interest and participation in school activities. Once again this year, under the direction of Mrs. Betty Langedyk, The N.H.S. sponsored a Folk Festival, which was held on November 24th, 1973. The purpose of National Business Honor Society is to promote business interest. In order to attain membership in this organi¬ zation, an upperclassman must have a B average and must have taken at least 3 business courses. Sponsors are Mrs. Be¬ atrice Pihulic and Sister Rosita. It is also the organization through which all other organizations of the school operate, as the officers keep a mas¬ ter calendar on which they record all dates for gym nights, movie nights, games, and dances, and thus avoid con¬ flicts between different activities spon¬ sored by different groups. The Student Council itself annually spon¬ sors all Homecoming activities and Win¬ ter Formal. The Apostolic Services Program initiated by Father Connolly for the 1972-73 school year was greatly expanded this year, with student volunteers continuing their services to the elderly at the Lake County Home, and also working with re¬ tarded children at the Day Care Center in Highland. Some students worked as tu¬ tors in English, reading, and mathematics, while others helped develop sports and recreational activities, at the Carmelite Home. Mr. Gerry Knesek worked with Father Connolly to co-ordinate these ac¬ tivities; Mrs. Betty Langedyk also helped with the elderly and the retarded. Sandy Soczyk speaking on the Hot Line to a caller with a drug problem. Ken Evancic and Mr. Knesek coaching athletes at the Carmelite Home for Boys. Other students who made valuable contri¬ butions this year were the volunteers who worked with Sister Francis De Sales in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, starting as teacher aides, then developing into student teachers with classes of their own. Another volunteer program initiated this year was the Hot Line, a program in¬ tended to give comfort, encouragement, sympathy, and strength to young people with drug problems. SERVICE CLUB Members of the Bishop Noll Service Club, sponsored by Mrs. Mary Michiel- sen, unselfishly devote their time and en¬ ergy to serving at all school functions dur¬ ing the year. These junior and senior girls, selected on the recommendation of their teachers, help to make events like the Sports Banquets and the Dinner Style Show run smoothly. They spend hours before the events setting the tables; dur¬ ing the dinners they run back and forth, pouring coffee, refilling cream pitchers and sugar bowls, finding just a little more butter; when the guests leave, the girls stay on, clearing all the tables. Service Club girls also donate their time on free days, helping to show Noll facilities-and Noll hospitality—to visitors. One of the main events sponsored annually by the Service Club is Turnabout. Mrs. Mary Michielsen Human Relations And Hi-Y The Human Relations Club has “just started to really grow, not as individuals, divided and separated, but as a collective, functioning organization”, according to club president, Larry Washington. This year, one of the main events of the group was the Human Relations Club Talent Show, held May 3rd. Not only was it a success financially, but it proved that stu¬ dents could work together and produce what was termed by Vernon Brown, “a real together jam.” A first for the club was an invitation to participate in a city-wide meeting of all Human Relations Clubs in the Hammond area, which Brother An¬ drew and Mrs. Patricia MacGregor felt was rewarding. ORGANIZATIONS 75 MISSION CLUB The main goal of the Mission Club is to make students aware of the poor and the needy right here in the Calumet area, and then to make students aware of the joy they may find in sharing their goods with those in need. Each year the Mission Club fills and dis¬ tributes Thanksgiving baskets and Christ¬ mas baskets. To raise money for these baskets, weekly raffles are held; students are also urged to bring canned goods, toys, and articles of clothing. One of the principal fund-raising activi¬ ties of the club is the annual Mardi Gras. This year the Mardi Gras was cancelled because of a crowded school calendar; but the sponsor. Father Mosko, has filed away the plans, to be ready for a bigger and better Mardi Gras next year. Members of the Mission Club setting up annual Christmas tree. Debaters participate in a series of argumentative discussions on assigned topics in the presence of a judge, while competitors in speech participate in po¬ etry reading, dramatics, and oratory, as well as impromptu and extemporaneous speaking. At the start of the season, the Debate Team consisted of only four members: Dennis Dvorshak, Ted Bloch, Michele Hicks, and John Kenward. However, the team, coached by Miss Janice Koss and Father Paul Tomasula, compiled an im¬ pressive record in local and state-wide competition, while the Speech Team suc¬ ceeded in qualifying two members, Den¬ nis Dvorshak and Ken Kristi, for regional competition. With its spirited drum rolls and trumpet blasts, the Pep Band provided real support for the foot¬ ball and basketball teams; in the Home¬ coming Parade and in the Hammond Christmas Parade, the Marching Band displayed the smooth music and smooth maneuvers that are the result of hours of diligent practice. From overture to finale, the Stage Band contributed greatly to the success of the 1974 Spring Musical, Mame; and at the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert, the Concert Band de¬ lighted audiences with their progress un¬ der Mr. LaMantia. At Holy Angels Cathedral on the bright sunshiny morning of May 24, members of the choral groups at Bishop Noll reached the culmination of their year of music. Throughout the year the groups had en¬ tertained widely different audiences on widely different occasions. They had sung the liturgy for the Thanksgiving Mass in the fieldhouse; they had sung Christmas music for the women at the Christmas Luncheon at Noll, and for the elderly at the Lake County Home. Some of the sing¬ ers had joined in the rousing choruses of “Marne” in the Spring Musical; then they had performed in the spring concerts at Noll and on the Canadian tour. Then on that bright May morning they filled the cathedral with praise and joy at the Bac¬ calaureate Mass. Band and choral groups on stage in auditorium for Christmas concert. CHORAL G.A.A. and Swim Guards Trackettes Mat Maids Bat Girls It was stated very clearly on the sports pages of yearbooks of other years: “At Noll there is an event for every boy with any desire to excel in athletics . . The Girls’ Athletic Asso¬ ciation was organized that there might be an event for every girl with any desire to excel in athletics. In the program sponsored by Miss Sheila Kelly, members compete in volley¬ ball, basketball, softball, and track; tennis, bowling, golf, and swimming received special emphasis this year as Miss Kelly sought to interest members in sports activities they might pursue individually, independently, to maintain a high level of physical fitness throughout their lives. The Swim Guards, The Trackettes, the Mat Maids, and the Bat Girls are all avid sports fans who do not care to compete, but who still wish to participate in some way. They assist the coaches by making posters, writing up lineups, drawing up scoreboards; by measuring, timing, and keeping statistics. It was to preserve this pride in the let- termen, and to foster students’ appre¬ ciation for the lettermen, that the Var¬ sity Club was organized. The “boys in blue” try to stimulate student interest in athletic events. They wear their let¬ termen sweaters to class on days of sports contests; they check coats and serve as ushers at the games; this year they covered up their sweaters with heavy raincoats while they directed parking for the more than 3.000 fans who jammed the fieldhouse for the Hammond High game. From the Foot- ball-O-Rama in ninety-degree heat to the last game in bone-chilling, teeth-chat- tering, muc-spattering rain, they lead the fans who cheer for the Warriors, urging the Blue and Gold to “fight, fight, fight for every yard,” to “hit that line ... hit that line . . 1: Junior Varsity Cheerleaders (From front) Barb Penkala. But the season was far better than the record of 4-6 would in¬ dicate. Two of the games were real nail- biters, lost by only one point on the very last play of the game. And two of the players ranked second in the area, out of thirty-two schools: Kevin Matovina, who passed for 1011 yards; and Steve Mitch¬ ell, who set a school record with 32 recep¬ tions for 622 yards. Coach Don Vish’s Warriors posted a 7-4 dual meet record, losing only to such teams as State Champion Mun¬ ster. runnerup South Bend Adams, and third-ranked South Bend Jackson, while set¬ ting fourteen new team and pool records, and winning Noll’s first varsity Lake Shore Conference championship. The outstanding meet of the year was the La Porte Relays, with the team setting a new record for total points in the meet, while winning first place trophies in ten of eleven events. In sectionals, Noll placed second behind Munster, with eight swimmers qualifying for the state meet in seven events. Led by seniors Tim Kennedy and Harry Dolinski, the Warriors placed fourth in State Championships; the 400 Freestyle Relay of Kennedy, Dolinski, Pat O’Neill, and Harold Weatherford not only won All-State honors by placing 3rd, but won consideration for All-American status. The 1973-74 season was disappointing for the Wrestling War¬ riors—in the number of meets lost, and in the number of men lost from the squads. Varsity Coach Jim Tobolski had only one senior. Tom Ancich; Mr. Sivulich had almost all first- year wrestlers competing against wrestlers with two or three years of experience; Mr. Sebestyen finished the year with ten of the twenty-four freshmen he started with. Since wrestling is one sport in which boys of all sizes can participate, and re¬ ceive the benefits of sports competition, the coaches feel the real losers of the year were not the boys who lost matches, but the boys who lost interest, or lost heart, and so were lost to the teams. But with nine wrestlers returning as seniors, and with two wrestlers, Tony Dorin and Warren Biederstadt, who qualified for ' regional competition this year, the coaches look forward to 1974-75 as the “Year of the Grapplers.” WRESTLING Sophomore Vince Berta prepares to apply a tough cross face against his opponent. The Warriors were once again led by MVP Tom Ispas and senior sharpshooter Phil Doherty, with Ray Baron and Ron Mazar giving the Warriors awesome rebounding strength. Junior Wally Kasprzycki, too. supplied the size and stamina needed un¬ der the backboards, while Paul Pobereyko showed real speed and aggressiveness at guard. The Warriors also boasted a strong bench with Kevin Cohorst. Tom Philpot. Ted Pietrzak. and Rupert Paul. Three of the Warriors’ five losses were by just one point, including the heartbreaking 68-67 sectional loss to Hammond High. BASEBALL-THE WINNING WARRIORS The year 1974 proved to be another successful season for the Warrior baseball team, as they captured their third straight sectional title, their fifth in the last eight seasons. The Warriors also won the Lake Shore Conference Champion¬ ship. their first in only two years of competition, while compiling the Region’s best overall record of twenty-five wins and nine losses, including a thirteen- game winning streak. Leading the Warriors to Coach Jim Anderson’s fourth straight twenty-win season was MVP Steve Mitchell, who hurled a record of twelve wins and two losses. The offensive threat was led by co-captains Phil Doherty and Paul Pobereyko. along with senior Tom Ispas, who led the team with a record-breaking thirty-five stolen bases, and who hit at a .329 clip. Im¬ pressive victories included wins over Illinois power Lane Tech and a double header sweep at South Bend, plus sectional victories over Munster, Gavit. and Whiting. The Warrior attack was hampered early by injuries to juniors Tom Philpot and Steve Mitchell, and a season-ending knee injury tl Mike Halton. With experienced pitching and solid defense returning next season. Coach An¬ derson should again field one of the strongest teams in the state. ORIENTATION Suddenly they were over—those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer”—and it was time for Noll students to pay tuition, pick up schedules, buy textbooks—and start school! Students who found that they had three religion classes and no chemistry joined the long lines at Student Services, while other students lined up to pick up uniforms at the Attendance Office. New freshmen wandered through the maze of corridors, clutching schedules, checks, and twenty-dollar bills, trying to find the D Building, the F Building, and the stairway to the third floor of the A Building. Sophomores, juniors, seniors all knew their way around; they whizzed through the red tape with at least the appearance of self-confidence and assurance. Seniors practiced daily for their pep rally skit. “Who’s Afraid of the Waller Wolves?” and then rushed home to make more, more. MORE tissue flowers for the floats for the big parade. Loyal Warriors darted in and out among the floats, selling balloons, stiring up more spirit for . . . the big game! The Warriors had no trouble keeping the big bad wolves away from the door ... or the goalposts ... de¬ feating the Chicago team easily, 34-0, to the delight of all the Noll Homecoming fans, and especially the 1973 Homecoming Queen. Just such a night was January 4. when “Sometimes in Winter” became one very special time in winter, the night of Winter Formal. The theme “Sometimes in Win¬ ter” was taken by general chairman Ray Luniewski and Gail Koharko from a song by “Blood, Sweat, and Tears.” Decora¬ tions chairman Debbie Mazurkiewicz and Lydia Skurka were responsible for bring¬ ing all the beauty of winter inside of the Noll cafeteria: they created an enchanted forest and a New England village with a little toy shop; they set up a cozy fire¬ place, and Christmas trees with glittering ornaments. Snow King Mark Hajduch and Snow Queen Jeannie Hartnett reigned for a night over this winter won¬ derland; their “subjects” proclaimed “Sometimes in Winter” to be one of the best times in winter. Snow Queen Jeannie Hartnett and King Mark Hajduch enjoy a royal sleigh ride. Damitra King and her escort. Joan Verkuilen and Jerry Kraay share quiet moments. TURNABOUT. The theme chosen this year by general co- chairmen Charlene Brooks and Marlene Mantich was “Just You ’n’ Me,,’ the theme of the song made popular by “Chi¬ cago.” Decorations chairman Eileen Boyle and Michele Hicks transformed the cafeteria into a garden of rosy-red hearts and flowers; there Sweetheart Queen Michele Hicks and her court were enter¬ tained by the music of “Ginger.” Laura Kolbus and Patti Halcarz do their part in decorating. Centered around the theme of “Liberated Ladies of Litera¬ ture.” actors, singers, and dancers from Junior High to Faculty displayed their talent. Under the direction of Mr. Mal- czak. Mr. Mutzbauer, Ms. Popovich, Mrs. Forcey, Mr. Mehok, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Pressner and students, Juanita Bush and Renalta Walters, the festival was divided into three segments. These segments were put together on April 27 and April 28 for two evening performances. The money from these performances was to go for the literary magazine. Extensions. 136 PROM 1974 The Conrad Hilton, in Chicago, hosted the 1974 Junior-Senior Prom. “Pieces of April”. In the Grand Ballroom on April 20, 1974. couples walked through mirror-lined corridors and danced under beautiful chandeliers to the music of Cracker. General chairmen. Dominic Raso and Jane Ellen Tilka crowned Prom Queen Corrine Koricich and King Philip Doherty. Mr. James Pressner was the sponsor for this event. Too soon, a lovely and memorable night ended as couples boarded the buses for home. Dominic Raso and Jane Ellen Tilka announce the members of the 1974 Prom court, shown above. Debbie Adams enjoys dinner with her escort. Each spring the members of the band, directed by Mr. La Mantia, and the different choral groups, directed by Father Winterlin and Mr. Sherman, entertain their classmates and their parents in con¬ certs in which they demonstrate the talents they have discovered and developed through their year of music. This year a combined concert was held on Mother’s Day, Sunday. May 12; this concert was repeated the following Wednesday, before a delighted au¬ dience of the entire freshman class. This performance served as the final dress rehearsal for the highlight of the year, the concert tour to Canada. On Wednesday at noon the students piled onto the buses with their suitcases, duffel bags, trombones and tubas—and with the “care packages” provided by loving parents—and rolled away on the tour for which they had dreamed, planned, prac¬ ticed—and to finance which they had sold boxes and boxes and boxes of candy. SPRING CONCERTS 140 SENIOR WEEK-1974 They had started the countdown right after Christmas vacation; they had crossed off all the days of all the months with big red X ' s. They still had three chapters in sociology to read, and one hundred forty pages of 1984 . . . Then suddenly it was May 22. It was THE LAST DAY. There was the last lunch at the special table in the cafeteria; the last hasty scrawling of the last words on the last paper: the last cramming for the last exam in THE LAST CLASS . . . Then they erupted out of the doors, into the parking lot. They ex¬ ploded a few firecrackers, raced a few engines, and roared off . . . only to return, just a few hours later, for the Senior Dance, to the music of the All-Star Frogs. Seniors receive copies of Senior Issue of JourNoll. Bishop Grutka leaves Holy Angels Cathedral, fol¬ lowed by Father Vrabely. The sun was shining, after days, weeks of rain, as the seniors in bright blue caps and gowns gathered on the steps before Holy Angels Cathedral. As they entered the church, the concert choir, under the direc ¬ tion of Father Winterlin, sang the Bach Chorale, “Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee.” Then the priests who had taught them in the classroom moved to the altar, to concelebrate the Mass with Bishop Grutka, as the choir sang “Prepare ye the Way of the Lord,” from Godspell , accom¬ panied by the brass sextet from the sym¬ phonic band. After the recessional, “Man and His World,” from the Canadian Expo ’67, the seniors found members of the JourNoll staff waiting to distribute copies of the Se¬ nior Issue, with the class will and proph¬ ecies, the class memories. It was BACCALAUREATE The priests who concelebrated the Baccalaureate Mass: Father Vrabely. Father Mosko. Father Mens. Father Moszur, Father Ruggaber. Father Halo. Father Manzak. Father Srode. -1974 GRADUATION-1974 “And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing.” With these words from Kahlil Gibran, Salutatorian Adrianne So- bilo welcomed parents and grandparents, faculty and friends to the Fifty-first Commencement, on May 27, and expressed the gratitude of the Class of 1974 to all those who had made the day possible. Valedictorian Mary Louise Bilek stated her belief that the gradu¬ ates were not really leaving Bishop Noll, since all were taking a part of Bishop Noll with them. Then Bishop Grutka spoke to his flock, exhorting them to continue the search to know the depths in themselves, the heights in them¬ selves, and the search to know how to change the world. Lower right: Junior Joseph Hughes, who received diploma with Class of 1974. Mr. Douglas Parker, Senior Class Spon¬ sor, read off the names, and one by one the three hundred forty-nine graduates marched to the stage to receive their diplomas. Then Father Vrabely called one more graduate to the stage: Junior Joseph Hughes, ranked Number One in the Class of 1975 throughout his three years at Bishop Noll, had accumulated enough credits to graduate with the Class of 1974. And they’re here climbing the same stairs, walking the same halls, as they help to administer the school’s eye-testing and ear-testing programs. They’re here—chaperoning all our dances, our gym nights, our movie nights; they’re here, cheering us in all our victories, consoling us in all our losses—and they’re here arranging a surprise party for the swimming team, a hot lunch for the baseball team. They’re here—selling tickets, making decorations—working on the Men’s Club Raffle, the Spaghetti Dinner, the Christmas Luncheon, the Dinner Style Show. On this page we would like to say THANK YOU. WE RE HERE! Well, this is it—the 1974 Marquette. It took a lot of hard work and frustration to get it done but we feel it was worth it. There will probably be some of you who aren’t completely satisfied with this book. Maybe next year you will be one of those who will try to improve it. This year we have tried to go behind the scenes to capture all those people who have made so many activities at Noll a success and have not been recognized in the past. In this years Marquette are pictures, memories, and emotions. We hope we have captured some that are special to you. We would like to thank Root Photographers for all the times they came out to the school to take yet another picture or to bnng us more supplies. In addition, we would like to thank Father Tomasula for doing us so many favors, our publisher. Mr. George Kingsley, and everyone who has given us help. Most of all, we would like to give special thank- yous to two very special people, Mrs. La Mere and Mrs. Crawford, for putting in so much of their own time and hard work. Without them, this yearbook could not have been what it is. This school year is history now and all of you have helped to make it. So celebrate—IT’S TODAY!
