i J,v,r J? Once upon a time, Bishop Noll seemed so big and monstrous ... —Diane Irk 73 ■ around comer north txii i cngoAue. parkii Bishop Noll is a school, and only that. It will open and close its doors the same way long after I’m gone. It’s not the lockers, or the desks, or the sounds; it’s the people here that I love. —Nancy Backus ' 72 Happy, involving, business balanced by smiles, laughing, walking through quiet or crowded halls— a fun sort of place. —Mary Frances Gilbert ’73 Extra-curricular activities help to develop the whole person—the chance to associate with others outside the classroom complements the academic experience. —Maureen Mulholland ' 73 I_———1—— 1 H 1 _ | ■ I . For seniors, it was the last time for everything. We don’t realize it now, but most of us will miss Noll and the people we knew. —Terri Szczepanski ' 71 Spring Musical “Nothing’s quite the same as the Pajama Game.” Directed and produced by Charles Breckle and choreographed by Mrs. Phyllis Peyrot, the 1970 spring musical, “The Pajama Game,” was an outstanding example of student co-operation as well as organization and capability of student and faculty directors. The majority of the action takes place at the Sleep-Tite Pa¬ jama Factory, owned by Myron Hassler, where the employ¬ ees, headed by Prez, were in the midst of organizing a strike for a “vital” seven and a half cent raise. Other scenes con¬ cerned the personal affairs of the employees: Kate Williams and Sid Sorokin, and Gladys Hodgkins and Vernon Hines. Adding humor to the story were the characters, Mabel and Mae, who delighted the audience. The Union hall comes to life with the Sleep-Tite employees’ rendition of “Steam Heat.” Later Ralph Fornari accuses an innocent Nora Ginther; Margaret Lukaszewski dreams of the day when she’ll never be jealous again. — Prom The theme of the 1970 Junior-Senior Prom, “All This is But a Dream,” expressed the dream-like atmosphere created on prom night. Held amidst the elegance of the Chateau Royale in Chicago, music for the evening was provided by Ronnie Rodgers and his band. A tribute to the class of 1970, presented by George Germick, and the crowning of the Prom King and Queen highlighted the memorable activities orga¬ nized by Prom Chairman Debbie Moldrawski and the mem¬ bers of the Junior Class. As couples danced to the post- Prom music furnished by “The Enchanters,” others climbed spiral staircases and enjoyed the beauty of the surroundings. As the busses began their long trip home, couples came to the reluctant realization that this dream had come to an end. Prom King and Queen, Ben Garner and Pat Santare, reign over the activities as Annette Mysliwiec and her escort dance to the music of “The Enchanters.” J Graduation For five hundred eighty-one students of Bishop Noll In¬ stitute a four year educational “cycle” terminated on Gradu¬ ation Day 1970. On May 28, the Baccalaureate Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Grutka and faculty priests. Afterwards, one hundred twenty-one scholarships and awards from colleges through¬ out the country were conferred. On Sunday, May 31, commencement exercises were held in the fieldhouse. Prior to the distribution of diplomas by Bishop Grutka, Valedictorian Gail Schweitzer reminisced over her past four years at Noll and then remarked that there were yet “things to accomplish, doors to open.” Salutatorian James Rybarczyk said that his career at Noll was “the worst of times, the best of times” and that he and his fellow graduates will start new and different lives after graduation. Jerry Egan receives his awards with a smile; Tom Miller, Florian Mikolajczky, Kathleen Mihalik and Dave Mick march to their seats for commencement exercises; Sister Agnes Clare congratulates Salutatorian Jim Rybarczyk. Faculty priests assist Bishop Grutka during the Offertory of the Baccalaureate Mass. Although Valedictorian Gail Schweitzer had received her award, other graduates patiently waited to rec eive their diplomas; Mike Calderone and Cathie Chrustowski rejoice after the ceremonies. The Jets stand ready for action as Maria (Pam Kelly) and Tony (Jim Grasha) secretly meet. The Shark’s girls: Sue McCormick, Gayle Wojciechowski, Suzanne Peyrot and Christy Thamm. Summer Theatre “West Side Story,” a modern musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, was presented in Bishop Noll’s fifth year of stag¬ ing summer theatre. The production was completely restaged for BNI ' S theatre-in-the-round. The action of the story takes place on the west side of Manhattan where the Sharks, a newly formed gang of Puerto Rican youths, are threatening the Jets, a well established American gang. Tony, a member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the rival gang leader, but tragedy results. The cast and band, which includ¬ ed adults and veteran actors, represented nine different schools and colleges. With the help of Mr. Charles Breckle, the director, Mrs. Phyllis Peyrot, the choreographer, and Mr. Roger Emig, the orchestra director, the Thespians performed to a standing-room-only audience. Knives flash and the rumble between the Jets and Sharks becomes a tragedy. Bernardo (Ray Laska) and Anita (Christy Thamm) discuss life in America as the Sharks stay on the watch. Maria tries to comfort Tony in the final scene. Orientation Another year of books, tests, lectures and activities began for students on Orientation Day. After seeing a movie and hearing a welcome back speech by the new principal, Father McGrogan, students made their way from the auditorium to one of the audio-visual rooms. Here they received class schedules and then moved on to find their homerooms, where locker combinations were distributed and course fees paid. As usual, upperclassmen peddled used books to their younger colleagues. Students that did not buy used books got the chance to purchase new ones in the cafeteria book¬ store. Orientation Day to the class of ' 74 was the start of a new life while to the rest of the classes it was simply the start of another school year. Freshman Kevin Arbuckle checks his booklist; new principal Father McGrogan directs freshmen; juniors Bob Wilson and Kevin McCarthy check the price of new books. Confident seniors Noreen Rosellini and Trudy Falcone attend their last orientation; a bewildered freshman receives assistance from Mr. Mutzbauer; mathematician Dennis Gerdes sports the “new look” as he doles out book fees. Homecoming The 1970 Homecoming will be remembered as one of Noll’s greatest due to the efforts of Chairman Luci Ardelean and the various committees. Activities commenced on Thursday, October 8, with a colorful parade through East Chicago. In keeping with the theme, “Those Were the Days,” the candidates for queen rode in antique cars. Paraders car¬ ried homecoming balloons and wore booster badges to ex¬ hibit their loyalty. A pep rally and senior skit concluded Thursday night’s activities. Friday was designated as dress up day, and students showed the spirit of winners. Halftime ceremonies centered on the coronation of the queen, Denise Ondrejka and a special theme program co-ordinated by the band and pom-pon girls. The next evening, couples danced to the music of “Courage” as John Clarke was crowned Mr. Touchdown. Class unity was shown by the award winning Senior Class float. Varsity cheerleader Diane Skurka and the School Spirit cheer at the pep rally. Juniors Lee Sredzinski, Nancy Backus and John Daly ready their vehicles for the parade. Homecoming queen Denise Ondrejka and Mr. Touchdown John Clarke reign over Homecoming activities, Mark Grafton and Meredith Simko enjoy the splendor of the dance. Chief Homa-Coma, Mark Wusik, sits before his teepee, awaiting a council of war. Fall Drama “You were in Brazil for two weeks and had them importing coffee,” remarks Leo Ambre to his bumbling son, John Daly as Dean Niedenthal takes notes. Jesse Ramos sneaks into the embassy; Jim Thorp and Chris Shatkowski reflect on days gone by. The annual fall production this year featured not only new actors but a new director. “Don’t Drink the Water,’’ a contem¬ porary comedy by Woody Allen, was directed by Mr. Joseph Malzak and produced by Mr. Charles Breckle. This production is noted for its variety of comic characters: a son, a Jewish caterer and his wife, a magician priest and a pompous sultan. The play is set in the embassy of a foreign country. The peaceful serenity of the embassy is broken by the intrusion of an American touring couple (Chris Shatkowski and Jim Thorp). To find an escape for them is the main problem of Axel Magee (John Daly). Things are complicated by a suspicious enemy agent Krojack (George Germick), and the romance of Axel and Susan Hollander (Sylvia Castro). I The Sultan of Bashir discusses marital problems with his harem comprised of Diane Brunet, Nancy Mantich, Joan Campagna and Laura Sredzinski. Jesse Ramos startles Chris Shatkowski with his magical skills. A comforting Sylvia Castro tries to cheer up John Daly. A threatening finger issued by Jim Thorp halts the angry protests of George Germick. Winter Formal The warm and festive atmosphere of the Christmas season prevailed throughout the BNI Ballroom at this year’s Winter Formal. Under the direction of Benedict Olio, Winter Formal General Chairman, the BNI Ballroom truly became as its theme indicated, a “Winter Wonderland.” Through hard work and creativity, a simple room was transformed into a scene of wintery elegance. A snow covered pathway lined with old- fashioned street lamps found its way into the gaily decorated ballroom. In the ballroom, complete with a foot bridge and an open sleigh, couples danced around a brightly lit Christmas tree to the music of “The Oasis.” The election of a Snow King and Queen became a new activity of this year’s Winter Formal with the crowning of Chuck Gora and Sharon Kish. Snow King, Chuck Gora, crowns Sharon Kish as Winter Formal Queen. Timothy Dermody and Patty Nalewski discuss the events of the evening, while earlier that evening Ann Dorin and her escort cast their vote for Snow King and Queen. Sock Hops The band blares, people dance, sing, gossip, listen, the music circulates and another sock hop has begun. An in¬ tegral part of school activities, sock hops serve as informal get togethers for all involved. Sock hops, which are club sponsored activities, bring profits and fun to such organiza¬ tions as the Medical Careers Club and Hi-Y. Annually spon¬ sored by the Human Relations Club, “La Soul Noche” pro¬ vides an evening of soul music for Bishop Noll students and their friends. The Marquette Yearbook Distribution Dance, held during the summer, proved to be a happy reuinion for everyone. This dance, under normal conditions, is usually held towards the end of the school year and is the time when students receive their long awaited year books. Another Mar¬ quette sponsored dance, “The Turkey Hop” was held during the Thanksgiving break. Sophomore Maryann Kumiega relaxes while talking to a friend at a sock hop. Jan Kowal and Ruth Tokarz display their dancing abilities. Mark Wusik and Regina Grabowski enjoy a slow dance; Pattie Matusik prefers a faster beat. Steve Homner of “The Rainbow Tree adjusts the microphone as students participate in a line dance. Seniors Georgiann Kish, Sam Dragovich, Bill Adamchik, Cynthia Slamka, Pattie Sabol, and Anita Purcell enjoy their last sock hop. Tony Rea and Gail Koharko arrive for Turnabout. Joseph Bac and Karen Zawada accept their bid from Mary Cera. Turnabout On February 20, 1971, the BNI cafeteria was transformed into a world of “Lollipops and Roses” as the annual Turn¬ about dance was sponsored by the Noll Service Club. This event gives all girls the chance to ask their favorite guy out for a romantic evening. Lollipop trees, rose trellises, cupid silhouettes, a garden path lined with flowers and lollipops and colorful table deco¬ rations all carried out this year’s theme. The band, “Clear- light,” provided the evening’s entertainment. The occasion was highlighted by the crowning of Terri Szczepanski as the 1971 “Sweetheart Queen.” The organization and planning of the dance was co-ordi¬ nated by Co-Chairmen Kathy Matono vich and Mary Cera, as¬ sisted by Service Club moderator, Mrs. Mary Michielsen. to JtsK Maria Olenik and Duane Lula stroll down a lane of “Lollipops and Roses” on their way to the dance floor, where “Clearlight” provides the music. Co¬ sponsors Father Pat Connolly and Sister Geraldine feel that if unity between students and faculty is to exist there must be an understanding between them. Various committees, in¬ cluding discipline, campus, and athletic affairs, were formed to help promote this unity. Assemblies allow all students to voice their opinions on school matters and activities. In addition to sponsoring Homecoming and Winter Formal, this year the S.C. and the Mothers’ Club worked together to host the first interarea high school fashion show. This year’s Council was run in a slightly different manner, with more of a feminine angle. President Kathy Sertich said, “It seems like the student’s idea of who should run the student government has changed. Among the many activities sponsored by the Student Council was a senior skit put on during Homecoming. S.C. Treasurer Peggy Janovsky and President Kathy Sertich. S.C. Vice-President Mary Beth Benson. Mr. Touchdown, John Clarke, escorts Homecoming Queen Denise Ondrejka in the Women’s Club—Student Council sponsored style show. S.C. Secretary Debbie Moldrawski, Arnold Grabovac and Joan Janovsky present thei r bid at Winter Formal, a dance given by Student Council. Beginning staff members examine short stories, poems, essays and art work submitted by students for publication in Noll ' s literary magazine. Roxanne Linders checks her article in a local newspaper; Sports editor Tom Ramker and News editor Jeanne LaMere check the JourNoii files. 54 Terri Szczepanski goes over her copy with JourNoll editor Tim Reuth while Emil Mosora works in the darkroom; Jim Thorp does research for his news bureau article. Publications The JourNoll, attempting to include everyone’s interests, presented a variety of articles and sketches. The columns contained not only the opinion of the editor and other report¬ ers on the staff, but also the views of the student body. Sports and feature items gave students an insight into what happened in academic and social events. Faculty carica¬ tures, photos and upcoming activity calendars made the JourNoll more appealing. The Beginning, the annual literary magazine, allowed tal¬ ented students of all grades to express themselves in poetry and artistic form. Both publications are sponsored by Mr. Jack Nelson. The News Bureau gives outsiders an inside view of what goes on at Noll. Two senior journalists are appointed to re¬ port Noll activities to The Times and other area newspapers. 55 National Business Honor Society members Kathy Kovacs, Sonia Lugo and Tim Rueth practice keypunch manuevers. National Honor Society President Dennis Pasternak and Emil Mosora run a film. N.H.S. Secretary-Treasurer Sue Mills and Vice-President Mark Simaga review a literary work. Honor Societies Many students receive deserving recognition with accept¬ ance into the National Honor Society. Candidates are eval¬ uated by their scholarship, service, leadership, and charac¬ ter. The organization is under the supervision of Sister Imelda and annually sponsors the Folk Festival and Variety Show. The National Business Honor Society, a sister organization jointly headed by Sister Rosita and Mrs. Pihulic, offers mem¬ bership to those juniors and seniors participating in the busi¬ ness program. A student must have completed at least three business courses by the end of his senior year and must maintain a B average in each subject for full membership. As an honorary journalistic organization, Quill and Scroll recognizes students who have achieved outstanding merit in the field of journalism. Eligible for acceptance are the mem¬ bers of the Marquette, JourNoll, Beginning, and News Bu¬ reau. This organization serves to enhance a student’s inter¬ ests and abilities in journalism. 56 Tom Rueth, Michael Heins, and Janice Jackovich, N.B.H.S. members, correct a treasurer ' s report. Medical Careers Club members Mary Beth Benson and Delia O’Kelly gain experience in using medical equipment; Secretary Janice Posavec uses her typing skills to record the minutes of an FSA meeting. FTA President Ruth Meeker, Vice-President Dave Radovich, and Sargeant-at-Arms John Toth exchange ideas on their college plans. Career Clubs Serving as teacher’s aids and listening to guest speakers help mem¬ bers of the Future Teachers of America realize what it means to be a teacher. Mr. Robert Czarnecki, FTA sponsor, helps the students to un¬ derstand the aims and advantages of the teaching profession. The purpose of the Future Secretaries of America is to introduce stu¬ dents to the many facets of the business world. Sponsor Sister Rosita assists club members in inviting guest speakers who broaden the stu¬ dents’ knowledge of the secretary’s duties and importance. This city¬ wide association hopes to develop in each member a professional and responsible attitude. Trying to acquaint themselves with the many branches and varieties of medical careers available is the purpose of the Medical Careers Club, moderated by Mrs. Irene Benson. Guest speakers, films, and trips to nearby clinics and hospitals help accomplish this goal. Spanish Club and Hi-Y Club Aided by club sponsor Mr. Antonio Hernandez, the officers and members of the Spanish Club strive to increase their un¬ derstanding of Spanish civilization. The annual Christmas Banquet, at a local Spanish restaurant, and Christmas carol¬ ing at the Carmelite Home for Boys, gave Christmas a Span¬ ish accent for club members. Pen-pals from Mexico help the students learn the customs and heritage of the Spanish world. The club also co-sponsored La Soul Noche, a winter sock hop, that featured the sale of Mexican foods. The Noll chapter of the Hi-Y Club was founded this year by senior Ricky McIntosh. It is a fraternity of the area YMCA on the high school level. The fourteen members meet once a week and have sponsored several BNI sock hops. The Hi-Y sock hops became successful events for both the club treasury and the students who attended; at a previous Hi-Y meeting, the selling of tickets for the dance proved to be the vital issue at hand. 60 Spanish Club President Harolyn Coleman, Secretary-Treasurer Rebecca Cuellar, and Vice-President Margaret Papierz, check on the Spanish lab. Hi-Y Club sweethearts, Nancy Guiden and Yvonne St. James along with club officers Tom Ramker, David Bryant, John Domazet, Ricky McIntosh, and Emery Biddings. Spanish Club meetings prove to be a time to learn and socialize. 61 Tom Sanders, Gerri Browning, Daria Grant and Terry Jones find relaxation by listening to the juke-box. President Joy Williams tries to prove a point with fellow members of the Human Relations Club. Sorting out and packing food donations was a major project of the Mission Club. Mission Club and Human Relations Club As an added incentive for contributing to the missions, a weekly collection of twenty-five cents was taken and then a drawing for first, second and third place was held for the contributors. Father David Hauskins, who is moderator of the club, continued the usual tradition of homerooms collecting foods of all kinds for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. The annual festivities of Mardi Gras were held in March. The Human Relations Club, directed by Father Pat Gaza, discussed the many problems existing between racial groups, especially those problems concerning students in area schools. One of the activities the club sponsored was the Student Exchange Program which allowed Noll and other high school students to share ideas by observing each other’s educational programs. Mission Club Officers Peggy Howard, Janice Bacon, President Dennis Pasternak and Debbie Imes gather information for an upcoming Mission Meeeting. 63 Service Club Treasurer Barb Skibinski and Vice-President Kathy Matonovich help clean up after a banquet. G.A.C. members Mary Owczarzak and Traci Bostonich practice their shooting before a game. 64 Service Club and G.A.C. Sponsored by Mrs. Mary Michielsen, Bishop Noll’s Service Club members devoted time and energy in serving at school activities during the year. The club was composed of junior and senior girls selected on the recommendation of their teachers. Its annual project is sponsoring the “Turnabout” dance, held in February, with this year’s theme being Lolli¬ pops and Roses.” The main purpose of the Girls’ Athletic Club is to give girls a chance to show their athletic abilities through an organized sports program. Members enjoy participating in basketball, volleyball, softball, swimming and tumbling. Sponsor Miss Sheila Kelly believes that girls are as talented as boys in sports and should have the opportunity to participate on athletic teams. G.A.C. President Denise Sobilo awaits a rebound: Miss Sheila Kelly, G.A.C. sponsor, explains game rules to a basketball team. Service Club Secretary Ruth Koval and President Lois Butte check the serving arrangements for an up¬ coming dinner. 65 Ruth Delauriea helps with the recording of the Guitar Society’s Folk Festival; Joe Egnatz introduces the next act for the Folk Festival. 66 Guitar Society and Speech and Debate At Noll, the purpose of the Guitar Society is to teach and encourage students to play folk music and to hold concerts that enable students to perform in public. The club’s moder¬ ator is Mr. Peter Andersen. Along with the National Honor Society, the Guitar Society co-sponsors the annual Folk Fes¬ tival. At weekly meetings members learn new songs. Many performances are held throughout the year, including the yearly Spring Concert. The Speech Team develops speakers and teaches stu¬ dents the value of communication. Quick thinking and re¬ search abilities are the main objectives of the Debate Team. Both teams pit top speakers of area schools against each other. Mr. James Cavallo is the moderator of the Debate Team which is ranked with the best in the state this year. Andrean’s Pat O ' Brien plays and sings as a guest at Noll’s Folk Festival; Mr. Jim Cavallo instructs freshmen Ted Bloch, Dennis Dvorshak and Gene Kubacki in the debate team rules. Rick Kerman, Mark Cohen, and Liz Beckman prepare their research for a coming speech meet. 67 Math Clubs and Amateur Radio Club A continued interest and practical application in mathemat¬ ics is the prime objective of both math clubs this year. Under the direction of moderator Mr. James Welborne, the Soph¬ omore Math Club organized the Annual Eighth-Grade Math Tournament and ordered club pins. The Junior-Senior Math Club, sponsored by Sister Imelda, acted as judges for the tournament and earned money by selling colorful folders. This year’s Amateur Radio Club brings the familiar code of the radio world to Bishop Noll. Moderated by Reverend Clare Hendricks, a major aim of the club is to make all members amateur radio operators. The club has been successful in setting up contacts with several overseas stations. One of the club’s projects is it’s annual transmission of Christmas greetings to friends and relatives stationed in Southeast Asia. Ed Liss, Tim Laud, Bill Santic, Jim Hohenberger and Kevin Arbuckle try to make contact with other radio stations throughout the world. Junior-Senior Math Club President Dennis Pasternak points out one use of the overhead projector to Vice-President Kathy Rabatin and Secretary Margie Rajnoch. N.A.R.C. The marching band performed during half time activities at football games and at various parades, among them, the Hammond Christmas Pa¬ rade and a Memorial Day Parade. The band was honored by being asked to play at Purdue’s Homecoming. The concert band performed a variety of music at several public concerts. All band members devote the last hour of each school day rehearsing their music and working on musical routines. By playing at basketball games, pep rallies and other special ac¬ tivities, a student may accumulate a total of fourteen points and earn a band letter. The band is directed by Mr. James La Mantia and is assisted by drum majorette Yvonne Webb and the band officers. Band majorettes Rosanne Janeczko, Sharon Kish, Georgene Cichocki, and Kathy Kuzydym run through a marching routine; atypical scene for the band room bulletin board. Dan Burosh practices on the drums. The Nollaires are a group of girls selected by their singing ability. Along with the Nollaires, the girls’ chorus, the boys’ glee club, and the mixed chorus performed at three concerts held during the year. The first was a tribute entitled, “An Evening with Rodgers and Hammerstein,’’ featur¬ ing many of their great selections. The annual Christmas con¬ cert consisted of traditional American carols and some Eu¬ ropean carols. Featured as part of the Spring Concert, this year, was a salute to the Music Man of 1970, Mr. Burt Bacharach. Freshmen Choral, Boys Choral, Nollaires and Advanced Choral join together under the direction of Sister Marie Andre to present a concert. Sally Burke Linda Hill and Karen Palla, together with Mary Beth Benson, rehearse for the Christmas concert. 73 The BNI Mat Maids— Row 1: Linda Zipko, Georgiann Kish, Patti Sabol, Cynthia Slamka, Anita Purcell, Cindy Krager. The Sophomore Pep Club joins the Booster Club in cheering at the Homecoming pep rally. Cheerleaders and Varsity Club An athlete who earns a letter in any one of Noll’s eight var¬ sity sports earns the right of membership in the Bishop Noll Varsity Club. The club was formed to give recognition to all boys who do exceptionally well in any sport. The most im¬ portant responsibility of the boys in blue” is to promote all athletic activities. Under the direction of Mr. Mike Merrill the members of the Varsity Club act as monitors during lunch hours and ushers at pep rallies. The N-men help solicit stu¬ dent funds for various causes and this year raised their own funds through the sale of basketball booster pens. The club also helped distribute Wheelchair Basketball tickets and booster badges. The organization is looked upon as a source and example of leadership and spirit by the entire student body. Coach Bill Archer makes use of the new video tape machine. The 1970 Warrior Track team finished an admirable season with a 9 win 5 loss record. Strong legs and mighty muscles carried the team to victory in both indoor and outdoor city meets. In addition they won the Clark relays and placed sec¬ ond in the formidable Andrean meet. The trackmen finished a close third in Sectionals missing the title by only 3 points. Noll qualified two trackmen for state competition: Jerry Skurka, for his record breaking ability in the pole vault; Chuck Smoljan for his speed in the hurdles. In all, 5 new records were set during the 1970 season. Coach Bill Archer considered this the best team since 1964 and looks forward to the 1971 season. Many promising sophomore and junior trackmen will return and many new records will be set. 85 Golf Woods and irons kept swinging as the 1970 Warrior Golf Team drove its way through a rewarding season with a 11-5 record. Most valuable player Joe O’Connor, followed by Terry Zgorka, John Morton, Bill Koliada and John Hurley stroked through the season with a mighty objective in mind—to win—and they did. Coached by Mr. Jim Tobolski, the linksmen placed second in Sectionals after a breathtaking “Sudden Death Playoff,” between Hammond Morton and Noll. At the start of the playoff it became evident that the Warriors meant business when they immediately eliminated the Governors and claimed the second place award. The two returning lettermen, Regis Blando and John Mor¬ ton, hope to lead the ’71 team to another winning example of BNI sportsmanship and spirit. John Hurley exhibits his follow through; Bill Koliada checks the fairway before his next drive; Terry Zgorka straightens his stance as he prepares to tee off. Baseball The sure-hitting 1970 Baseball team wound up a successful season with a record of 18 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie game. At the beginning of the season, the team swept through a pow¬ erful 10 game winning streak and added an exciting close to the season by grabbing the Hammond Sectional Baseball Championship. On the average, our Warrior team outscored all the opponents, especially with the help of leading hitter, senior Tom Kovach and top pitcher, Jack Sonnenberg. Sen¬ iors Joe Fabian, Rich Halton, Ed Przybyl, Mike Sember, and Phil Trembczynski contributed to the point totals with home- runs and stolen bases. The Warriors salute Coach Bob Bradtke as he leaves the baseball field for the last time. Newly appointed Head Coach Jim Anderson hopes to repeat the team’s winning way and establish a new “era” in BNI baseball. The 1970 BNI Baseball team: Front row: Mgr. Tom Cummins, Tony larocci, Randy McCambridge, Dennis Maciejewski, Tom Rouse, Mike Heins, Mgr. Mike Calderone. Back row: Coach Bob Bradtke, Joe Fabian, Eric Wilk, Rich Halton, Tom Kovach, Phil Trembczynski, Mike Sember, Jack Sonnenberg, Joe Laciak, Ed Przybyl, Mark Danko, Ass’t. Coach Jim Anderson. The 1970 BNI Cross Country team: Front row: Julian Brown, Tony Klusas, Mark Bittner, Jim Burczak, Bruce Bittner. Back row: Ray Szczepanski, Tom Nies, Mark Clawson, Tom Vahey, Terry Bonneau, Coach Bill Archer. n ! Cross Country Twenty-eight members of the Cross Country team, the larg¬ est in the history of Noll, ended a respectable season with a 5 win, 5 loss record. Co-winners of the “Most Valuable Run¬ ner” award, Bruce Bittner and Tony Klusas, led the team over hill and dale while “Most Improved Runner” Mark Claw¬ son added speed and agility. Co-captains Pete Doherty and Terry Bonneau helped push our team to their best finish in the “Patriotic” meet held in Indianapolis and finally to a 5th place finish in Sectionals; speedster Tony Klusas’s 13th place finish in Sectionals is one of the best performances turned in by a Noll runner. In Coach Archer’s words, “This season was disappointing yet interesting. Our record was not the best but each boy im¬ prove d considerably in overall performance.” Frank Podkul gets ready to throw a fake at a Lowell defender; Coach Mike Merrill diagrams a new play during halftime. Mark Grafton attempts a field goal from short range. Football The 1970 Warriors experienced every variety of game strat¬ egy while compiling a 6-3-1 record. After winning their first two home games, the Warriors dropped a heartbreaker to Hammond High 16-12. Not to be denied a winning season, Noll’s gridmen went on to take four more victories while losing two and tying Morton in what was a truly classic defensive battle. This year’s offense, under the steady hand of junior quarterback Eric Wilk and the running power of seniors Andre Hornsby and Joe Potraza, scored consistently. The defense, led by “best lineman” John Clarke, many times proved too tough to move against. Though next year’s team will be small, Coach Merrill, with the help of Assistant Coaches Anderson and McDonough, hope that through training programs during the year they can build up their young squad. Andre Hornsby evades tacklers and looks for daylight up ahead; Assistant Coach Mike McDonough explains a defensive formation to the linemen; Eric Wilk barks the signals to center Sam Dragovich. 93 A running play by Andre Hornsby fails as tacklers move in; the referee signals a Noll first down. Noll tankmen take a flying start from the blocks; Coach Herb Marquedant shows concern during the Munster meet. Swimming With a relatively young team the 1970-71 Warrior swimmers compiled a noteworthy 9-4 record. Summer practice ses¬ sions, followed by strenuous morning and afternoon work¬ outs during the school year, proved valuable in conditioning and strengthening team members. Sectionals, the most important test of the swim season, brought two new tournament records and qualified 10 Noli tankmen for state competition. Outstanding swimmers at the state finals were: Mike Reilly, third in the 400 meters free¬ style; Greg Artim, fourth in the 200 meters freestyle; Doug Kamradt, fifth in the 100 meters backstroke, and the 400 me ters relay team of Jim Etter, Reilly, Artim and Terry Austqen which placed sixth. y ’ Coach Herb Marquedant felt, “the times and improvement of the individual members indicated a great deal of talent and hard work. Next year ' s team will rely on a nucleus of twelve returning lettermen and plenty of experience.” The 1970-71 Warrior Swim Team, Row 1: Bob Wilson, Co-Captain Mark Matusik, Greg Artim, Bill Campbell, Tim Menke, Jim Berkowicz, John Burczak. Row 2: Coach Herb Marquedant, Bob Jackowski, Scott Kamradt, Keith Clinton, Mike Reilly, Co-Captain Terry Austgen, John Dodd, Mgr. Don Witt. Row 3: Tom Skiba, Doug Kamradt, Glenn Goodwine, George Fitzpatrick, Jim Etter, Tony Svitko, Jim Brown. 97 Wrestling As Wrestling Coach Jim Tobolsk! stated, “this year’s suc¬ cessful season was a great surprise. I never expected this young team to do so well, especially in Sectionals.’’ Finishing with a 10-3 dual meet record, Noll’s grapplers combined ag¬ gressiveness with good team spirit and knowledge of the fun¬ damental holds. Most Valuable Wrestler Chuck Gora led the team with an undefeated (16-0-1) record through Sectionals. Other stand¬ outs included Most Improved Wrestler Dan Richwalski with the most takedowns and John Clarke leading in pins. Both Gora and Junior Lupe Solis won their division at the Calumet Sectionals. Complementing the proficiency of Noll’s wrestlers the past few years has been the increased student interest and at¬ tendance at many meets. With nine lettermen returning to next season’s squad, Noll can look forward to a continuation of the recent winning tradition. John Clarke struggles to pull his opponent to the mat; in the same meet, Dan Richwalski tries for a pin by flipping his opponent. An Andrean wrestler strains to get away from the tenacious grip of Captain Chuck Gora; Noll ' s Lupe Solis executes an over-the-shoulder flip as the referee watches closely. Heavyweight Sam Dragovich prepares to move in on his Highland rival; Pat Halton strives to improve his position. The 1970-71 Noll Wrestlers, Front Row: Lee Sredzinski, Dan Richwalski, Bob Murphy, Jeff Svoboda. Randy McCambridge looks for an open shot. Mark Lissy waits downcourt while Frank Podkul gets set for a free throw. Basketball Trying a variety of line-ups to take advantage of the best possible combination, Coach Bob Bradtke used the 1970-71 basketball season to rebuild and stress team co-operation. The year (9-11) was marked by several exciting and also several disappointing games. The squad’s best performance was a thrilling home win over highly-touted Valparaiso after a triple overtime. Also memorable were wins over Lew Wallace and Horace Mann, and a stubbornly fought battle with top- ranked E. C. Washington. Most Valuable Player John Domazet led the team in both rebounding and scoring, reaching the Top Ten of area scorers. Coach Bradtke rotated the team roster, bringing up players from the talented B-Team to gain game experience. He stressed “the high degree of sportsmanship and determina¬ tion that characterized the 1970-71 team,” and feels “next year’s squad will have the height and speed to challenge the best of the tough Calumet Region.” Tim Kimmel takes a jump shot early in the Cla rk game; Coach Bob Bradtke reviews his game plan during a time¬ out. It glows and shines—it lights up our faces—ENTHUSIASM, the keynote that makes us sing and makes others sing with us. ENTHUSIASM—The maker of friends—the maker of smiles—the producer and result of confidence. It cries to the world, “We’ve got what it takes.” It tells all others that our job is a swell job—the goods we have are the best. ENTHUSIASM—The inspiration that makes us “Wake Up and Live.” It changes a pessimist to an optimist—a loafer to a go-getter. Upon the plains of hesitation, bleached the bones of countless millions who, on the threshold of victory, sat down to wait, and waiting they died. Well, this is it-the 1971 Marquette—a product of ENTHUSIASM. A yearbook can be alot of things: a catalogue of the year’s events, a reference to school friends, a showcase of the school, a work of art. Many of you, I’m sure, aren’t completely satisfied with this book. You probably have individual ideas and suggestions. But it is too late for this year, we can only look back to it. Those of us on the staff had our own ideas. We all worked as hard as we felt necessary to create the best book we could. It was as hard and took as much effort on our part as that of many others who devoted their time to other school activities. But the one unique thing about our work was the fact that our book is all the other activities and events of Noll. It is meant for all students to see themselves and their friends in. It took a lot of ENTHUSIASM to complete this book, just as it took ENTHUSIASM to get through each day of this year. It is Noll’s inspiration and spirit that kept this book going and made all the effort worth it. What does “Noll spirit” mean? For the underclassmen, spirit is always a hope for tomorrow and next year, a whole calendar of events and activities, a chance to express their pride and feelings through BNI. To them I wish the best of luck and all the ENTHUSIASM to carry on. For the ’71 graduates, spirit is something that brings us back to visit Noll as alumni, and something we can express in whatever we do. To us, I hope this yearbook stands as a reminder of our ENTHUSIASM—past, present and future. Memories are made of this. Editor-in-Chief
