Set against a background of gang rivalry, the musical unfolds the tragic love story of Tony (Jim Marshall) and Maria (Pam Kelly). The authenticity of sets and lighting handled by Lou Takacs, production manager, added to the drama’s total impact. The choreography by Mrs. Phyllis Peyrot enhanced the performances of Gayle Sacco, Stan Jayjack, George Courtis and the other Jets and Sharks and their girls. Directed by Mr. Michael Hennessey, the stage band complemented the singers. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Brcckle and assisted by Miss Sharlenc Kendall, West Side Story achieved a degree of professionalism uncommon in high school productions. 18 The comical rendition of “Officer Krupke contrasts sharply with the death of Tony. Bernardo’s death is a tragic result of the conflict between the Jets and the Sharks; the Sharks’ girls conclude a mambo at the gym while their boyfriends issue a challenge to the Jets. In the city fields contemplating cherry-trees . . . strangers arc like friends. King and Queen Jim Madryk and Carol Nluha majestically reigned over the '68 Prom after they were crowned by Brian Lukich. prom The Prom theme, Ecstacy of Spring, reflected the feelings of Nollitcs last May. The baroque setting of the Shcraton-Blackstonc Hotel provided an enchanting backdrop for the couples who dined sumptuously and danced to the music of “Four Days and a Night” and “The Jet Set.” During the course of the evening. Prom Chairman Gerry Knesek bid farewell to the seniors, emphasizing that 8N1 was losing a good part of itself by losing the graduating class of 1968. Overwhelmed, the seniors tearfully responded. This regal evening was climaxed by the Grand March in the Ballroom, led by Prom King and Ouecn. Jim Madryk and Carol Muha. The long trip home proved to be eventful: two of the buses were involved in a minor mishap. This obstacle overcome, a night that was a dream came to a wonderful conclusion. While couples mingle on the dance floor. Prom Chairman Gerry Knesek shares a thought with his date Liz Babinicz. graduation Graduation was the culmination of four years of ceaseless toil for hundreds of students of Bishop Noll Institute. It was the climax of a scries of events which included retreats, senior dances, and a senior skit at homecoming. The Friday night before graduation. Bishop Grutka and the faculty priests concclebrated a Baccalaureate Mass for the graduating class of ’68. During the ceremonies, 107 scholarship awards from various colleges and universities across the nation were announced. Noll was also honored to have five of its seniors named as National Merit Scholarship finalists. The graduation ceremonies were held Sunday afternoon in the ficldhouse. Valedictorian Jim Mosora and Salutatorian Brenda Murphy bid farewell to BNI, reminding those left behind that “the destination of tomorrow is a searching discovery, a constant change, the expansion of the self. 24 Thc Fantasticks: Bob McCree (Mortimer). Cast, crew, and band worked long hours to compensate for the shorter rehearsal time for a summer production. The cast included Terry Sherman as Sky Masterson, Pam Kelly as Sergeant Sarah Brown, Pete Scurtu as Nathan Detroit, and Dcnnicc Kolodziej as Nathan’s long-suffering girl friend Adelaide. The Fantasticks, Broadway’s longest running musical, was Noll’s second summer production and Noll’s first alumni show. Like Guys and Dolls it was directed by Mr. Charles Brcckle and choreographed by Mrs. Phyllis Peyrot. Except for senior Dan Toncheff and junior Pam Kelly the cast was comprised of graduated veterans of Noll’s theatre who arc presently attending universities across the country. Gamblers Joe Glucckert and Roger Dclzncr look over the Racing Form. Pete Scurtu seems somewhat disappointed by Dcnnicc Kolodzicj's present, while Pam Kelly resists smooth-talking Terry Sherman. 25 26 orientation On Orientation Day, the incoming freshman class received their first glimpse of high school life, BNI style. The new students of the class of ’72 were anxious to begin their four years at Bishop Noll Institute. Homerooms were filled with the usual amount of confusion and frustration as class schedules, locker combinations, and book lists were distributed and explained. Orientation Day brought with it renewed friendships and talk of future plans. The academic halls buzzed with moans about old teachers and speculation about new ones. The talk of the day, however, seemed focused on the new superintendent Brother Edmund Burke. Orientation Day began with students locating their homerooms on rosters outside the main entrance. I_atcr. they tried their locker combinations, hoping they would work the first time. In the cafeteria, business teachers facilitated fast, efficient book purchasing. The virtue of Patience was needed if anyone wanted a schedule change. The cafeteria, a makeshift bookstore for Orientation Day. was cluttered with boxes, books, and confused students. Seniors robbed their home linen closets of old sheets for the award-w inning senior float. homecoming Spirited student participation characterized the ’68 Homecoming week-end. Thursday evening’s parade initiated the festivities. The award-winning senior float, fifty-two decorated cars, and the Bishop Noll Marching Band were highlights of the parade. On Friday, an enthusiastic pep rally featured a fight speech by the new football coach, Mr. Mike Merrill. That evening during the dazzling half-time ceremonies, Geri Golonka was named Queen of the Homecoming. The Saturday night victory dance featured the soul music of “The Intellectuals. Mr. Touchdown, Larry Kalina, reigned with Geri during the festivities. The juniors, in charge of the Homecoming Dance, used favorite characters from Oz and other story book lands to interpret the “Fantasy Land” theme. The BN I Homecoming finalists and their escorts for 1968 included Sue Klein and Jim Tonkovich; Marilyn Murzyn and Bill Huber; Queen Geri Golonka and Mr. Touchdown Larry Kalina; Liz Babinicz and Gerry Knesek; and Sue Heins and John Sanbor. 29 30 Gayle Sacco encourages Ed Kcnar to beat Bob Kaftanich at a poker game; Ron Klaprodt carefully checks to see if Sneaky Fitch, the tough gunfighlcr. is in the vicinity. Through the direction of Mr. Charles Brccklc and the assistance of Miss Shar-lene Kendall. Noll's students were transformed into tough. Western characters. Ed Kcnar (Sneaky Fitch), Carl Gargula (Rackham), Walter Grzych (Mervyn Vale). Gayle Sacco (Maroon), and Tim Burke (the singer and narrator) played the roles of the main characters. The sets, built by Steve Niemicc, Ed Piekarczyk, Jose Martinez, and Jerry Dominik reconstructed a typical Western town. Effective mood lighting was created by Jerry Dominik. The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch was a delightful change from the tense drama presented last year. Judging from the reaction of the audience, the production will go down in Noll’s history as humorous, delightful, and a huge success. Cindy Jessup of The Incorporation soulfully sings the lyrics while Mark Melyon and Elaine Sanders shuffle their feet to the beat. sock hops Stacks of loafers, piles of coats, and the faint strains of the band’s warmup signaled the beginning of another Noll sock hop. Dozens of girls poured in wearing the latest fashions and groups of boys shuffled in to join the excitement. All eyes were on the band, whether it was “The Intellectuals. “The Incorporation, or “The Changing Times, who performed in an atmosphere of flashing, multi-colored lights and blaring sounds. Each dancer demonstrated his own unique style of rhythm and movement, then gathered with friends to catch his breath during the intermissions. The evening wore on as everyone enjoyed the informal mood provided by this important part of Noll’s extracurricular activities. Whether dancing, or simply listening, students took advantage of a much needed breather from the hectic routine of classroom life. 33 34 winter formal A record 180 couples attended this year's Winter Formal. The Student Council General Assembly, which annually sponsors the dance, selected “Can-dlcglow and Mistletoe for its theme, and elected senior Janet Nau and junior Mary Daisy to serve as co-chairmen. Senior Mary Lou Canan functioned as chairman of the Decorations Committee with special assistance from seniors Steve Jay jack and Wally Grzyeh. Couples attending the dance walked through a miniature forest of pine trees and into the BN I Ballroom which was decorated with clusters of mistletoe and furnished with small cafe tables with Christmas decorations. They danced to the music of the R B Showmen,” a popular Milwaukee band. Santa Claus, Mr. Smith in disguise, completed the winter scene by making an appearance with his helpers to hand out bids. Jan Farcus and Winter Formal Co-Chairman Mary Daisy and their escorts enjoy the Christmas atmosphere provided by “Candlcglow and Mistletoe.” mardi gras Mardi Gras was an exciting day for those who won and for those who were experiencing frequent splash downs. Brightly colored streamers flooded the ficldhousc; posters, galleries, and booths covered the walls; mobs of spectators jammed the aisles; and in the background a band played for a dance in the balcony. The Mardi Gras, Noll’s pre-Lenten tradition of fun, festivity, and amusement was a pleasurable way of raising money for the missions. Hours before the opening, enthusiastic workers planned and organized their booths supervised by Sister Catherine, Brother Mark, and members of the Mission Club. The Mardi Gras was highlighted by the crowning of the 1969 Mardi Gras King and Queen. In a close contest, finalists were Nancy Koharko and Leo Ambre in third place; Denise Ondrcjka and Ben Garner in second place; and Queen Linda Fleming and King Greg Skubisz Company.” 37 A highlight of the evening was the crowning of Rita Vargo as Miss Sweetheart by her escort Craig Lebryk. turnabout Black buildings and bright red ones, a dark sky filled with stars, tables topped by burning candles, and servants dressed in Russian clothes set the romantic scene of Turnabout's Midnight in Moscow. in the entry way a display of red hearts and cupids added a touch of Valentine elegance to a Russian gazebo. John Beckman, Student Council President, has commented: The students of Bishop Noll want more control of school affairs, and with this, more responsibility. Assisted by Vice-President Ed Kenar, Secretary Marcy Polak, Treasurer Nick Dujmovic, and co-sponsors Sister Maria and Brother Patrick, John has attempted to channel the student drive for involvement with the faculty's desire for school improvement. To this end a variety of student-teacher committees have been created. These include Curriculum, Recruiting, and Discipline Committees, which recommend changes in school policy. In order to provide a direct outlet for the student body, the Council initiated the Student Council newspaper. The School Is Burning. Its columns arc open to any student who will take the trouble to write. JJJJJJJ Nick Dujmovic, Student Council Treasurer, and Marcy Polak. Despite this lack of varsity experience, the trackmen scored several surprise wins. Fine showings at the city meet in Chicago and at several triangular meets gave the trackmen some extra impetus to go on to the state sectionals. Senior I.arry Gram bo made it to the state finals in Indianapolis, where he came in second in the 60-yard dash. Junior Cliff Pcnwcll, the Warrior polc-vaultcr, and sophomore miler Dave Tworkowski gave BNI consistent, outstanding performances. Chuck Sovich, Larry Grambo, John Hayes, and Greg Skubisz made up the mile-relay team for the Warriors. Five indoor records were broken and one outdoor record was rewritten in ’68. Coach Bill Archer is looking forward to many more broken records in ’69. 77 Junior Cliff Pcnwcll succeeds in perfecting his pole-vaulting style; sophomore Steve Furman demonstrates his ability in the high hurdles. golf The 1968 golf season was one of rebuilding for the Warriors. Guided by head coach Mr. Frank Sullivan, and assistant coach Brother Patrick Mccgan, the linksmen compiled several impressive showings, but ended with a losing record of 3-9. Early season victories in 1968 over East Gary, Lake Central, and Griffith were hopeful. The linksmen also shot well during the Lake Hills Invitational; a team total of 351 consisted of Joe O’Connor's 81. Terry Zgorka's 87, Andy Szurgot’s 88, and Rich Samck’s 85. These four lettermen plus senior Jim Byrd will comprise the 1969 squad, when Mr. Mike Merrill optimistically takes over the reins as head coach. With the five lettermen returning, the ’69 team could rise to stardom. Junior Jim Byrd concentrates on a drive to the green; sophomore I erry Zgorka carefully examines his lie in the rough. Junior Andy Szurgot follows his shot out of the rough; sophomore Joe O'Connor studies the flight of the ball. 80 football The BNI football team of 1968 displayed a great amount of resiliency. It faced a do-or-dic situation after losing the first two games of the season. Then, with the game against Clark, a 12-0 win. the Warriors began their second season.” Quarterback Dave Knish led the effective Warrior offense. He was supported by three consistent running threats, senior Bill Jurbala. junior Bill Huber, and sophomore Jim Jacobs. The tough defensive unit was captained by senior I.arry Kalina. The highlight of the year was an overwhelming homecoming victory against Morton. The final game victory over W hiting completed an outstanding record of eight straight victories. After losing the first four meets, the Warriors gained some status by winning the final two dual meets of the season. Fine showings in the Highland Invitational and the Hammond City Meet laid the foundation for the sectional. In that meet, the Warriors placed a strong fourth out of twenty-two competing schools. Juniors Dave Tworkow-ski, Jim Haney, and Kevin Strnatka, and senior Mike Nelson led the way for the Warriors. Because many of these letter-men will be returning. Averaging over 80 points a game and registering a 15-5 record. Coach John Dermody's men ranked as one of the region’s finest teams. Senior co-captains John Mravinac and Dave Knish rebounded and scored well. They were the only real veterans on the team. Senior Ed Schutz and juniors Ben Garner and Jack Sonnenberg rounded out the starting five, providing excellent shooting and rebounding. Surpassing the century mark in two games was an indication of the balanced scoring. An opening season victory over highly touted Tech gave the Warriors instant recognition. A high point of the year was winning the Hammond Holiday Tournament for the second straight year by defeating Tech again and bombing Clark. The purpose of Social Studies, in the words of the departmental head. Sister Maria, is to learn to be in another’s skin ... to free the mind of the student and help him help himself gain a clearer, wider vision of people.” Therefore, the faculty has introduced a new emphasis on outside reading and research, curricula additions, and student re-creation of historical and political events. The Religion Department, steered by Father Varga, works under the theme “information and formation.” Collecting the necessary information is not the difficult part, for as Father Sroka said, Anyone can master a book; how many can master themselves?” It is in this application of knowledge to one’s life that a good faculty is essential, for it is through their coaxing, questioning, and guidance that the student learns to be honest with himself. english and language Under the supervision of Sister Alcuin. the English Department adopted a trend toward independent study by introducing new techniques and courses. A film unit provided pupils with the opportunity to examine the art of motion pictures in depth. Applying the principles they learned, student film companies produced experimental movies. Established in conjunction with the Sophomore Advanced Placement course, a new Outside Reading Program fostered research and discussion of literary works. Revival of the Drama Festival furnished a representative history of the theater from Aristophanes to Albce, while providing practical theatre experience. The Language Department, headed by Mr. Orcncio Aguilera, imparted knowledge of a foreign tongue to students. Utilizing this skill, pupils gained an insight into the culture and history of other countries through projects and audiovisual aids. 98 Ken Sunny increases his knowledge of literature through outside reading. English classes give students an opportunity to develop their skills by group discussions. As language labs aid students of foreign languages, so records aid the students in Miss Matz’s English class. Spanish students eagerly wait to be called upon to answer a question. business education The Business Department, headed by Sister Michelle, provides effective courses for those interested in becoming part of the modern business world. Students interested in secretarial fields are offered courses such as typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, clerical practice, and business machines. For broader development, an opportunity is offered in business management. business law, retailing, consumer economics, business math, and salesmanship. This year, as part of the curriculum, various businessmen from the area met with students in order to better their understanding of business as it exists today. Business students at Noll have the opportunity to put into practice their studies by helping in the new business supplies office. Students duplicate the daily attendance bulletin, and type and ditto material for the teachers. Sharon Kroger compiles business expenses on an adding machine while Ed Zabck completes an intricate accounting assignment. Junior Jack Sonncnbcrg struggles with a typing problem, and seniors Mike Rowe and Laurie Kocur prepare a mimeograph machine for operation. Keyboard facility demands intense concentration on the part of the students. fine arts Noll’s Fine Arts Department, supervised by Mr. Michael Hennessey, affords students the opportunity to uncover and to develop artistic talents. Mr. James Sherman, the choral director, was a new addition to the staff. Under his leadership the various choral groups performed in a fall Pop Concert and at the annual Christmas and spring concerts. Noll’s marching band, directed by Mr. Hennessey and led by drum majorette Maggie Ispas, enjoyed an active season. Besides playing for all home football games, the band participated in statewide marching competition, placing in the second division, and marched in Purdue’s homecoming parade. Members of the Art Department contributed their talents to Noll’s theatrical productions by helping make programs, posters, and scenery. 103 Art student Toni Kaezorowski receives guidance from Mrs. Kovach as Linda Homco displays her talents on the violin. Bishop Noll Institute’s HpWc Af pantoent, directed by Sister prepares girls as future homemakers. The Dr' department offers a four year home arts program which includes one year each of general homemaking, family living, cooking, and sewing. Juniors and seniors may participate in a program on a more academic level that develops skill in sewing and the culinary arts. The department also helps its students learn to establish long-range goals for financial security and it provides the necessary training for achieving them. Learning through actual experience keynotes this department. Girls participating in home arts courses plan and cook meals, prepare budgets, and sew their own creations. mm Basketball players prepare to rebound a shot; calisthenics develop the student into the physical condition needed for competitive sports. education physical Physical education, under the guidance of Athletic Director Mr. George Wilson, is offered at Noll for sophomore and freshman boys and girls. Through various calisthenics and indoor sports, these students experienced vigorous activity to provide greater endurance and physical well being for each student. The indoor sports included basketball, soccer, and volleyball. When the weather was favorable. the students enjoyed softball and soccer outside. Swimming for beginners was provided by varsity swim coach Herb Marquedant. Each gym day, the students left the gym classes more alert for their remaining classes and more physically fit for the demanding future. Diving is one facet of the extensive Noll swimming program; two teams battle for possession of the ball in a demanding game of soccer; more than any other sport, volleyball requires teamwork. 107 r.r t V 0 a A tape is 64 f drafting . 0 his anl y £ yr s to the IIT computer as Craig Gcrdcs and Ralph Fornari tackle a Senior Dick Mcisterling makes use of the overhead projector to demonstrate 108 mathematics New courses and projects have been added to all phases of the Mathematics Department this year to offer students a creative approach that moves beyond theory. Sister Faith, departmental head, and other mathematics teachers who attended area conferences and lectures, realized that Noll students enthusiastically participate in many courses that nearby schools have not even attempted to offer. The sophomore, junior, and senior Math Clubs have combined to sponsor Computer Math Courses for interested students. Two teletypes, installed in the math lab, arc connected to the computer at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago; Noll students program these machines themselves. Faculty members are writing and experimenting with a new course in geometric algebra. A Math Fair, with projects from area schools, has been added in conjunction with the annual Math Tournament. Terry Van Sant explores the math shelves while Tom Rowe and Ernie Hasselbring discuss the finer points of the slide rule. science The Bishop Noll Science Department, under the sponsorship of Brother Bernard, attempts to give the science students the opportunities to reason out basic concepts and to relate them for practical use. Experimentation gave the students insights into the underlying principles of science. In biology, sophomores studied nature and related problems of today, such as air pollution. Chemistry students were able to apply their knowledge of structures of compounds through experimentation and direct use of these compounds. Physics students delved into topics which underlie all forms of scientific knowledge. Included among these topics were movement and weight. Besides giving the student well-rounded scientific background, these sciences prepare them for the evcrchanging and challenging world of science. Biology students Gene Owen and F-'ulton Purnell examine their experimental results: physics students Mark Ambrc and Mark Bclislc uncover the effects of friction on a moving object: in the chemistry lab. seniors Judy Zimmerman and Jo Ann Jancosek test for the presence of oxygen. As the year is to be looked at as progression, we have focused on people and events as stepping stones toward this progression. People and events must step out to be recognized. We have tried to make this book step out— to attain a mark of distinction. To the Christian II rot hers, who leave us at the end of the school year and who have served as outstanding examples of loyal, dedicated persons interested in the development and well-being of the students of BN I. we dedicate the 1969 MARQUETTE.
