This day was more than just the start of a new school session. For the class of '71 it marked the beginning of almost a new way of life. On Orienta- 19 lion Day. the freshmen got a glimpse of what high school life held in store for them. The expected amount of confusion and disorder resulted while they located their homerooms, bought their books, and tried to find their way around Nollâs buildings and halls. For the rest of the student body. Orientation Day meant seeing old friends, classmates, and teachers. While the day's activities were carried out. the sophomores, juniors, and seniors settled down once again to being students of BNI. Buying books was one of the class of 71's first activities. 20 TURNABOUT A Valentineâs Day setting of heart-trimmed white trees, over-sized paper flowers, suspended hearts, and a frilly keyhole through a heart doorwayâthis was the Key to Your Heart. Sponsored by the Service Club. Turnabout Night gave interested females the about-face opportunity to ask members of the opposite sex to a date affair. Romantically spaced among the valentine trees outside the doorway were love seats, forming a picturesque garden setting for the young couples. The vast ballroom floor met lively feet dancing to the music of the Premiers. Crowned as Miss Sweetheart during the Turnabout activities was Mary Jean Du-dash. The couples walked, sat. talked and danced. Then the night came to an end. Slowly, the couples walked out hoping to find another paradise like the one they found that night. Come, take the key. and enter into my heart. 4- 0 'T o -tf JL 3 o â0 âC -0 Mary Jean tiudash, escorted by Larry Crambo, reigne s Miss Sweetheart for PROM 22 If the first prom was an idea born from a dream to attend an elegant ball for Cinderellas and Prince Charmings, the dream was fulfilled in Une Charmante Soiree. For the first time, the picture of girls in long dresses and boys in tuxedos was made complete in the grandeur of the Palmer House. The night was perfect, as only Prom night can be. In the beautiful gold and white ballroom, couples danced to the music of Ronnie Rogers and his Band. There was a grand march led by Prom King and Queen. Ray Laska and Mary Golonka. Now. only a tender moment still recalled, a pressed corsage, a remembered dance, and a goodnight kiss not forgotten remain from that One Enchanted Evening. That night, expressions of happiness were as common as evening gowns and tuxedos. The sock hops give students an opportunity to sport their latest fashions. SOCK HOPS The atmosphere was truly psychedelicâswirling, colored lights made reflections on the walls, guitar distortions turned traditional tempos into resounding beats, and hip kids featured the newest styles from Carnaby Street. The fieldhouse or cafeteria became a crowded dance floor for Noll's many sock hops. Well-known disc jockeys and battle-of-the-bands between popular groups prompted immediate rhythmic movement from the students. No shoes, a comfortable skirt-sweater-knee socks outfit or levis and a shirt without the tie created a relaxed mood for students pressured by the tensions of the school year. An integral part of the Noll social program, the sock hops provide students with an informal opportunity to learn the latest dance steps and to meet new people. MUSICAL Those who came to the initial tryouts of last year's musical, My Fair Ixidy, were cautioned by Director Charles Breckle and Producer Brother John Walsh that only the utmost in theatre would be accepted. This challenge was met and surpassed by the talent and desire of the young actors. In time, awkward boys and girls were transformed into the most elite of English society, while other participants assumed the guise of ruddy Liverpool cockneys. Much more painstakingly adapted were the lead roles played by Tom Egan, Mary Lynn Kolas. Phil Ponce, and Lee Purcell. All the effort put into the memorizing of lines, the learning of dance steps, and the singing of verses was aimed at the final performance, and yet. whmv it came, no on(f really jntbd iffto finish., Pickering questions. Why canât a woman be more like a man? 27 28 SUMMER THEATRE In the second season of Noll's Summer Theatre, the drama department successfully executed two arena-set productions. Jim Marshall. Lee Purcell, Michele DuBose, and Cindy Golan starred in a sterling performance of the mild satire on the roaring 20's, Boy Friend. Through unselfish devotion of time and effort timid and awkward students were transformed into outspoken. Riviera-stepping people of the past. In a representation of the avant-garde drama. The Roar of the Greasepaintâthe Smell of the Crowd, Terry Sherman and Phil Ponce recreated the constant struggle in life between the ââhavesâ and the have-nots.â These summer stock musicals, staged under the direction of Mr. Breckle and Brother John Walsh, proved but a small milestone in the path to the summit of modern theatre. |im Marshall and Michele DuBose enact one of the more touching scenes from the summer production. Boy Friond. WINTER FORMAL This yearâs winter formal, entitled The Christmas Inn, was an enchanting highlight of the Christmas vacation. The programs, organized by general chairman Steve Gigac, and the decorations, engineered by Michele DuBose, were hailed as the best in recent years. The scene was one of a little village in the wilderness. Frosted windows, a warm Fireplace. and pine trees provided a captivating experience for all who came. Tables arranged in the fashion of a cozy living room and a pathway through snow-sprayed scotch pines gave the atmosphere a touch of the magic fascination of Christmas. While refreshments were served by students attired in the garb of eighteenth century pilgrims, couples danced to the music of the Rhythm-Aires. Refreshments, served in traditional dress, added a novel touch to the memorable evening. General Chairman Steve Gigac shows he is enjoying his visit to The Christmas Inn. FALL DRAMA Mailed with standing ovations, numerous congratulatory telegrams, and plaudits from all viewers. Bishop Noll's Thespians presented their performance of the fall dramaâInherit the Wind. Surpassing all previous standards, the play, under the direction of Mr. Charles Breckle, was based on the famous Scope's trial, which dealt with the religious dissent against the theory of evolution. The basic plot centered upon the courtroom clash between the agnostic Henry Drummond dim Marshall) and the Bible preacher. Matthew Harrison Brady (Lee Purcell). John Govert as E. K. Hornbeck. Don Camp as Cates, and Liz Ardelean as Rachel Brown were major cast members in supporting roles. The change of pace from last yearâs comedy to this year's drama was a thought-provoking, successful venture. Donald Camp, acting the role of Cates, and Liz Ardelean. playing Rachel Brown, reflect anxiety about the outcome of the trial. 33 34 Cathy Reilly, Student Council President, finds hearty congratulations are an important part of graduation. SENIOR ACTIVITIES Four years at Noll drew to a close for 35 the class of '67 at the graduation exercises, Noll's most important event. Headed by valedictorian. Dave Schweitzer, and Frances Hepner, the salutorian. the class bid their final salutes to BNI. As the tradition exists. graduation ceremonies were preceded by an in memoriam week of final senior activities. The week was highlighted by three main events, the Senior Dance which was held on Thursday night, the Baccalaureate Mass on Friday after which honors, awards and scholarship winners were announced, and the culminating point on Sunday, graduation. The dance, the seniors' last extracurricular activity. featured the class prophecy and an amusing parody on Noll's teachers. Graduation brought Senior Week to a close with hopes that well-developed Christians proceeded into the future. The last few minutes arc spent checking and rechecking tassels and hemlines of the traditional caps and gowns. HOMECOMING Innovations enhanced the excitement of Homecoming â67. The weekend festivities began on Thursday with the Homecoming Parade. For the first time, the Marching Band, in new uniforms. led fifty-five car-floats and a host of eighty Warriors in battle-dress, through downtown Hammond. Later that evening. Nollites participated in the first Homecoming Bonfire at Irving Park. A pep rally and senior skit preceded Friday night's game. During half-time ceremonies, Candy Wahl was crowned Homecoming Queen. Reigning with Candy were Dave Adamczyk as Mr. Touchdown and the ladies of the court: Carol Brown. Carol Idu, Carol Muha, and 36 Rosanne Skawinski. The victory over Horace Mann was celebrated Saturday evening at the traditional Homecoming Dance in the Japanese wonderland of Ka Nichi Wa. âShambles makes it m-mmm good!â â A c X iKff'} , r; 11V 3 V p l V °j , t A0, di â 6 (V' 7 PcrOf Q W n tf0t j )t vt FOOTBALL Kerry Kremer. envelope concentration, studies tfarc'gam and CoachiVJpbur d instructionsjduring ÂŁ Jll pracl Coach Bob Wilburâs football team, handicapped by a hard schedule and an overabundance of injuries, achieved a respectable 5-4-1 record. The predominantly underclass team was led by co-captains Dave Adamczyk. Jim Zavesky. and George Sarver. The tough schedule included the number one team in Indiana. Injuries. especially those to Jerry Ko-vaeik. Bill Jurbala, George Sarver. and Kerry Kremer, also hurt the Warriors. Despite these many setbacks, the players never gave up. They gave 100% effort in every game. Forced to rely on its defense in most games, the squad gave up only 139 points while scoring 172. Faltering after the win over Morton, the team finished strongly. Beginning with the Homecoming triumph over Horace Mann, the Warrior gridmen lost only once, to top-ranked Richmond. They ended the season by pounding Tech 34-6. In these action shots we sec Bruce Quenzler making his cut on an end sweep. Dave Adamczyk scrambling for extra yardage after a long gain, and Jim Zavcsky fighting for an Adamczyk aerial. Center Mike O'Meara shoots for two against Tollcston. and top scorer Terry Quinn leads a fast break. The Noll basketball team of 1967-68 enjoyed an outstanding season and was ranked among the top ten prep teams in Indiana. Size, experience, shooting ability, and school spirit carried the Warriors to eighteen victories in twenty games, including a winning streak of sixteen games. Led by Captain Terry Quinn, Dave Knish. Jim Madryk, Mike Magdziarz, and Mike O'Meara, the players of Coach John Dermody averaged 83 points a game and easily defeated most opponents. South Bend Washington fell to the Warriors for the first time ever, 100-73, and Gary Roosevelt fell for the first time since 1956, 84-81. Triumphs over Crown Point, Tolleston. Griffith, and Frocbel were also important. Our only two losses were to Hammond Tech in the opener, 69-68, and to Illinois power, Thornton Township, 61-59. The dream of a state championship was shattered in the sectional by Gary Tolleston, 70-62 in overtime. This loss and the 89-56 sectional win over Calumet left the Warriors with a well-deserved record of nineteen wins and three losses. Dave Knish gets set to shoot against Griffith; John Mravinac stretches to get the rebound from a Tolleston player. The Warriors monopolize all back-board activity, while Dennis Henson's quick maneuvering and Jim Madryk's speed give the Warriors a scoring advantage over the opposing team. The team was led by co-captains Mark Furman and Steve Kowal, strongest in the sprints and relays. Coach Archerâs trackmen broke five school records and tied another. Record holders Terry Glogow-ski, Chuck Sovich, and Bruce Quenz-ler return in '68 to attempt to break their records. During the indoor season, in which they had a record of 13-3-1. the Noll trackmen captured second place in the City Meet. Outdoors, despite a mediocre 5 and 5 record in dual meets, the team showed its desire by winning the twelve team Hammond Relays, placing second in the City Meet, third in the Clark Relays, and fourth in the Chesterton Relays. Lcs Wolf, a two year lettcrman, labors on form in his specialty, the low hurdles, as senior Chuck Sovich takes off on one of his patented rapid sprints. Producing an encore to last year's stunning sectional triumph was a tough task for Bishop Noll's 1967-68 matmen. However, the 4-6 record compiled by the rebuilding squad is certainly deceiving. Development of youngsters in hopes for the future was the theme which dominated the team. Losing all lettermen through graduation. Head Coach James Tobol-ski and Assistants George Wilson and John Whisler had to rely on youth. Of the eleven lettermen comprising the squad, only five graduating seniors, A1 Hill. Phil Williams, Mike Covert, Roman Barlog, and Dave Miller will be lost. Led by Captain Mike Covert, the sophomore and junior laden crew provided a creditable and promising performance. The sectional tournament proved somewhat of a disappointment since none of the Noll grapplers reached the finals. However, the encouraging team victories against Gary Tolleston, An-drean, Hammond High, and Clark, plus the outstanding potential exhibited by the inexperienced wrestlers can allow one to speculate, with some amount of assurance, for a banner Bishop Noll wrestling season in 1968-69. WRESTLING In order to obtain their essential pins. Noll wrestlers Phil Williams. Tom Krcczmer, and Mike Wahalik gather their reserve strength. SWIMMING Finishing the '67-'68 season with a record of eleven wins and three losses, the swimming Warriors set three new marks this year under Head Coach Gary Lutker. Junior Steve Drozda swam the 400 meter free style event in a record 5:03.7. Senior Paul Austgen chalked up a record time of 2:41.8 in the 200 meter individual medley. And a team composed of juniors Dennis Gainer, George Gardina, Carl Gargula. and Steve Drozda set a 4:20.2 pool and team record in the 400 meter free style relay. Under the direction of diving coach Brother Hugh Prosses, junior diving ace Tom Rice completed an undefeated season. After setting a new record in the Munster sectional, Rice went on to capture a second place crown in the state competition. 54 The team's defensive skills arc demonstrated by the infield play of Dave Knish. the outfield ability of Pat Ellis, and the hurling prowess of Gene Watroba. BASEBALL During the past spring Bishop Noll's baseball team blossomed as a strong contender for city and state laurels. Fashioning an impressive 15-8 mark. Coach Bradtke and Assistant Coach Barry are speculating on a yet better performance during this campaign. Although the team has lost such fine lettermen as co-captains Tom Czechanski and Dennis Scheidt, and also Tim Chiappini. Jeff Swedren, Tom Janowski, Gene Watroba. and Al Kozlowski, the team will be buttressed by a core of current senior and junior standouts. Heading the list are returning lettermen Jim Zavesky, Terry Quinn, John Racich. Jack Polance, Dave Haviar. Dave Knish. Pat Ellis, and Dan Quinn. Although the squad lost their second tournament game last June, it is inevitable that a better showing is in store this season. Dave Haviar is shown practicing his skills in the batting cage, and Walter Verbish displays his method of circling under pop-ups. ty Championship form and fine equipment contributed to the Warriorsâ success last spring. GOLF The '67 edition of the Bishop Noll linksmen ventured onto the fairways without a single letterman from the previous year's squad. Rookie golf coach. Mr. Frank Sullivan, overcame this handicap and fielded a team that compiled a winning record of 15-13; and this was supplemented by a fine fourth place showing in the 1HSAA Sectional at Lake Hills. Graduation has stolen Chuck Thomas. Randy Yablonowski. Bernie Madura and Bill Moylan; but returning lettermen Terry Zorka and Joe O'Conner should prove to be good cornerstones that will be able to support the rebuilding of the '68 golfing Warriors. With these two lettermen returning this year. Nollâs âmasters of the fairwaysâ 57 are almost certain to better last seasonâs record. Practice, concentration, and hard work were the essential ingredients that shaped the winning Warrior squad. CROSS COUNTRY 58 Although Bishop Noll's cross country team sported a rather poor 3-5 record in season competition, the foundation for future success was certainly laid. Led by senior co-captains. Rich Clawson and Tom Savin, the young squad did remarkably well in the three tournaments it participated in. The team ran well in both the Hobart Invitational and the Indianapolis Shortridge Invitational; however, both tourneys were simply preludes to the surprising fifth place sectional finish. From the seven man squad, five promising lettermen are returning; namely, junior, Mike Nelson, and sophomores, Dan Savin, Dave Tworkowski, Jim Haney, and Kevin Stranatka. With all this youth returning, Head Coach Archer is certainly looking forward to the starting gun signaling the beginning of the 1968 season. Warriors Jim Haney and Rich Clawson show their endurance in the grueling two mile trek. Although near exhaustion, the runners refused to give up and pushed themselves to the limit of their abilities. Members of Bishop Nollâs Service Club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Betty Langedyk, unselfishly devote their time and effort to host all school functions. The club also planned t h e annual Turnabout Dance,â its most important project this year. Connie Pikula and Pat Rajnoch discuss the format of their next math meeting. CHESS CLUB AND RADIO CLUB Typifying the broad interests of Noll students are the Chess Club and the Amateur Radio Club. The aim of the Chess Club is to promote an interest in and understanding of chess. Providing assistance in setting up schedules for the club's competitive games are the c o -s p o n s o r s , Reverend Clare Hendricks and Reverend Robert Mantel. Club members also form a squad for competition with other area schools. The annual Chess Tournament for Noll students is sponsored by the Chess Club. The goal of the Amateur Radio Club is twofold: to encourage an interest in ham radio operation, and to provide a civic service to the school. With the assistance of Mr. Jon Grasch, moderator, members transmitted messages to Viet Nam as a Christmas project. Members also do work to qualify for amateur radio licenses. Concentration is the key to success in a chess game. language clubs 80 Nollâs Spanish Club was organized to create an atmosphere that promotes better understanding of Spanish culture. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Vincenta Martinez, it also helps to maintain and increase class interest. The main objective of the French Club, sponsored by Mrs. Genevieve Hajduk. is to send a student to Laval University in Canada for summer study. It raises money for this activity by showing current films in Noll's auditorium. âSaturnalia, â a Christmas festival, is the main activity of the Latin Club. The purpose of the club, whose monitor is Mrs. Vione Kelly, is to increase the knowledge of classical culture on which Western Civilization was built. Movies and slides dealing with Roman or Greek subjects help to accomplish this goal. Dr. Martinez talks to interested Spanish Club members about the Spanish heritage. Charles Leady, Jim Mosora. Cindy Bohan, and Diane Dorcik live it up. Roman style, at the Saturnalia. French Club president. Sally Pihulic. and vice-president. Karen Homco, discuss the excitement of the French language. Mary Jane Cera and Jean Grabovac relate how many languages are derived from Latin while Larry Carlsson and Phyllis Fortuna use the modern language lab to enhance their use of the Spanish language. AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS AND ART CLUB Classes at Bishop Noll are frequently supplemented with movies, filmstrips, records, and tapes provided by the Audio-Visual Department. This department provides the projectors, tape recorders, and record players on which these A-V materials run. The Audio-Visual Department also assigns the use of the two audio-visual rooms, which together accommodate 203 students. Mr. Thomas Biel, the head of this department, teaches interested students how to operate the equipment, thus relieving teachers of some extra work. The Art Club, sponsored by Mrs. Grace Kovach, provides an opportunity for students to work on individual art projects which include sculptures and paintings. as well as various school projects. This year the members also took a trip to the Chicago Art Institute. 84 13 AN I) The 1967-68 Bands were a great morale booster for this yearâs Warriors. There was a Pep Band giving support at all the pep rallies and games. A special selection of band members played the musical score of My Fair Lady with tremendous success; and for the first time in the history of Noll the students and faculty witnessed the appearance of the BN1 Marching Band at this seasonâs football games. The result of a week of summer drilling at Camp Lawrence helped produce effective formations for the stylishly attired 121 member band. The director and head of activities for the bands is Mr. Michael Hennessy. who is aided by Band Club President Pat Kors. Diligent moments of practice produce precision maneuvers at the Hammond Holiday parade for BNI's marching band. CHORAL AND NOLL AI RES 86 One of the aims of the choral groups is to brighten the studentsâ life through music. Under the direction of Sister Julien, the various choruses presented musical programs to the student body. At Christmas the junior-senior mixed chorus, the advanced chorus, and the Nollaires sang Christmas Is . . . In May, the mixed freshman chorus, the freshman girlsâ chorus, and the two sophomore girl choruses joined these groups for the annual spring concert. The Nollaires is a special ensemble of girls selected from the advanced chorus. The Nollaires not only sing for choral programs at school, but also sing for various clubs and organizations outside school. Last year the Nollaires received a superior rating in the Northern Indiana Music Contest at Indianapolis. The junior-senior mixed chorus practices for a program. The Nollaires sing joyously for the Christmas program. BOOSTER CLUB, CHEERLEADERS, AND MONOGRAM CLUB Noll's cheerleaders set the example for school spirit, exhibiting boundless enthusiasm at all pep rallies, football, and basketball games. Leading the student body in victory cheers are varsity members: Nan Wilczynski. Carol Muha, Denise Magee, Geri Golanka, and Susi Heins. Rallying the efforts of the junior varsity team are Janie Klein, Liz Trinkle, and Marijane Fijut. A novel approach to increase enthusiasm in the male spectators was the addition of boy yell leaders. Using megaphones to lead cheers. Pete Murphy, Don Haluska, and John Durajczyk joined the cheerleaders at all varsity games. The cheering squad, sponsored by Mrs. Garnette Kockler, exhibits good sportsmanship while supporting Noll's teams. Conveying their unlimited vitality to the crowds, these girls and boys raise the teamsâ morale by inspiring the spirit of the supporters. Monogram Club officers Dan Pole. Don Sebestyen. and Mike McKern discuss their respective positions of treasurer, vice-president, and scrgcant-at-arms in the organization. A carload of Noll's enthused cheerleaders leads the Homecoming Parade. Nollâs Booster Club, one of the finest in the region, encourages school spirit and team pride for our athletic program. BOOSTER CLUB, CHEERLEADERS, AND MONOGRAM CLUB The Booster Club, sponsored by Miss Carole Hepner, is a fine example of Nollâs unparalleled school spirit. Cheering gains a new dimension as the Booster Club executes letter formations and long-practiced routines while cheering at Noll's varsity basketball games. No one wonders where the club, a constant boost to the morale of the team, gets its name. This year sophomores caught the spirit and organized themselves into a yell block to support the Junior Varsity team. The Monogram Club, moderated by Mr. Robert Wilbur, is composed of boys who wear letters to indicate achievement in varsity sports at Noll. In addition to acting as ushers at all assemblies, the Letter-men formed a boys' cheering block this year. The boys sit behind the Booster Club and both blocks cheer together with the cheerleaders to display Noll's unmatched enthusiasm. The result of such spirit won BNI the 1968 Last Chicago Sectional Sportsmanship Industrial Award. BIG AND LITTLE SISTERS, CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION, 92 AND GIRLSâ ATHLETIC CLUB The Big and Little Sister Program, the Noll Civil Rights Commission, and the Girl's Athletic Club all provide important services to the students at Noll. The Big and Little Sister Program. under the guidance of Sister Rosemary, is designed to help freshman girls become acquainted with upper classmen. Such activities as a Tea and Style Show, a Dunes Beach Party, and a Gym Night enabled these little sisters to mingle with older students and other members of the class of 71â. The Girls' Athletic Club allows girls to participate in activities not ordinarily available. Basketball, volleyball, and swimming are part of the format offered to the girls by Miss Barbara Owczarzak's organization. Noll's Civil Rights Commission was organized under the guidance of Sister Maria for the purpose of promoting cooperation and understanding among the students. Candy Wahl of the Big and Little Sister Program helps freshman Roxanne Linders become acquainted with Bishop Noll. Pam Mayes, president of the Civil Rights Commission, discusses racial problems with fellow students. The Girls Athletic Club officers. Terry Macko. Denise Koslow. President Karen . King. Millie Kennedy, and Beth Barcus await another of their spirited workouts. w PKÂŁ k inJoeo Ml V. i (M ttfUJ cK -U AU r  P b -K r j. U -C L.CW C - (Lo L RELIGION AND SOCIAL STUDIES 96 The Religion Department, headed by Father Varga, is an essential aspect of Bishop Noll, for religion teachers attempt to show the students how to relate Christianity to their lives. During class, students share ideas and discuss beliefs about such vital problems as poverty, racial prejudice, and the war in Viet Nam. These issues are recognized as the challenge of Christians today. The Social Studies Department, headed by Sister Maria, aims to motivate the student to an interest in political and social situations and make him aware of his responsibility to other people. Government and sociology courses outline the world today, while United States history. Russian history, and world history offer the student a knowledge of the past essential to an understanding of the present. Religion can be spellbinding: Father Bartnicki poses vital questions to his students. 97 The social sciences help a student to realize that current events and the medieval past arc both chapters in the continuous history of the world. 98 ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE Noll's English Department, under the direction of Sister Alcuin, attempts to enhance the students' knowledge of their language, literature, and speech. During the first semester the department sponsored a one act play called The Lottery . The department held a film festival for the junior and senior classes during the second semester, revealing the importance of film as a work of art. The aim of the Foreign Language Department, headed by Dr. Martinez, is to instill within the student a living interest in a foreign language. Besides concentration on grammar, conversation, and reading, the student is given historical background concerning the language. The teachers use modern aids, such as flash cards and overhead projectors, as well as the text. This work is supplemented by classroom tape recorders and the modern language labs. BUSINESS EDUCATION The extensive activities of the Business Education Department serve every business need of the school. In addition to their regular classroom business subjects, the students of the Business Education Department print the daily bulletins and the absentee bulletins, and mimeograph material for the faculty and administration. The world of business is revealed to students through such classes as typing, shorthand, secretarial practice, bookkeeping, recordkeeping, business machines, business law. and business mathematics. The department, headed by Sister Ivan, creates an awareness of the requirements of today's business world. Practical experience of business techniques gained in the classroom working with typewriters. ditto machines, and adding machines develop the background skills necessary to obtain and maintain successful positions in the business world. hi Operating a business machine gives Marlene Cargas insight into the modern business world. 101 102 Students make use of available materials to express their artistic inclinations. FINE ARTS Noll's Administration provides for the students' cultural interests in the Fine Arts Program. This program allows the students to further their respective interests in elective courses. Sister Julienâs choral classes give students a chance to perfect their talents in the field of singing. Mr. Michael Hennessy teaches the band groups which have provided Noll with an outstanding student orchestra. Drama classes are taught by Mr. Charles Breckle who seeks to give students an understanding of modern drama and its conventions. Mrs. Grace Kovach and Mrs. Katherine Parker, art teachers, provide students with interesting art projects in their popular classes. This year the general fine arts program was bolstered by an experimental fine arts course. This course combined the talents of Sister }ulien, Mr. Breckle. and Mrs. Kovach who provided students with interesting insights into their respective departments of music, drama, and art. Concentration and practice are the mainstays of Noll's fine student virtuosos. 103 104 HOME ARTS In order to acquaint its students with domestic skills, the Bishop Noll curriculum includes several courses in homemaking. After an introduction to homemaking in the freshman year, sophomore girls take a foods course, which focuses mainly on nutrition and balanced diets, junior and senior girls study textiles and learn the basics of sewing and knitting in a clothing course. The girls discover the fundamentals of home economics in well-equipped labs. Eight ultramodern kitchen units provide a realistic training center for beginning chefs. Amateur seamstresses are given the opportunity to develop their skills by using cutting tables, sewing machines, and ironing equipment. Assisted by Sister Marjorie, head of the Home Economics Department. and Mrs. Sally Evanoff, many students achieve nearly professional results in their various home arts projects. Bov Grcevich cuts up in sewing class. 106 Sit-ups arc one of the more painful aspects of phy ed. An important part of the Bishop Noll curriculum, especially for the underclassmen, are the gym classes which are required of all freshmen and sophomores at Noll. The physical education course is designed to help students achieve a reasonable degree of physical fitness, and this goal is usually reached whether the students like it or not. The physical education program consists of a daily routine of calisthenics mixed with baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and gymnastics. In addition to these sports, swimming classes are provided. Because of the large number of students, however, these classes consist largely of beginning swimmers. The gym classes are held in the field-house and in the girlsâ gym. but are moved outdoors when the weather is good. Mr. George Wilson is the head of the Physical Education Department. PHYSICAL EDUCATION MATH Mathematics has become increasingly important in this modern, computerized world, so Bishop Noll's Math Department aims to provide its students with a sound mathematical foundation. More areas of math are covered because the department, headed by Sister Faith, offers a variety of courses. Visual aides, such as overhead projectors and plastic models. promote better understanding. To increase their knowledge of mathematics, students are given opportunities to do so at the Mathematics Workshop. It is held during the summer and supplements what is taught during the regular school season. The department also gives upper classmen the opportunity to participate in a program at the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturdays. This course offers interested students a different and challenging approach to mathematics. Large-scale models of slide rules and quadratic planes further understanding of mathematical concepts. mi w' i 0' wA 4'i New visual-aid equipment and three dimensional figures virtually replace the blackboard as the means for class demonstration. 109 itiiP' Nltf SCIENCE The Bishop Noll Science Department, under t h e direction of Brother Bernard, aims to present a factual knowledge of science and to encourage rational thought processes in the students. Emphasis is placed on experimentation so that the students will discover for themselves the basis for the principles they learn in the classroom. In molecular biology courses, sophomores study a boundless variety of living things from white rats to cultures of bacteria. Chemistry students probe the composition of numerous compounds in their study of matter. Physics classes open doors to the challenging world of electricity, waves, and kinetric energy. This year, special programs were presented by agencies such as NASA and by visiting scientists. Well-qualified teachers and excellent laboratory facilities enable the student to comprehend the fundamental concepts of the scientific world. Accurate measurement is as fundamental to the scientist as a knowledge of addition is to the mathematician. Ill 112 A court scene from this year's fall drama shows seminarians Roger Gerdes. the mayor, consulting the judge. Jim Mosora, while Don llaluska as the court baliff watches intently. SEMINARY The Gary Diocesan Day Seminary, which has been in existence for four years, is a special division within BNI. This yearâs seniors will be Nollâs first graduating seminarian class. The seminary is under the direction of Reverend George Vrabley, the Rector, and his assistants Reverend (oseph Viater, Spiritual Director, and Reverend Robert Mantel. Student Advisor. The seminarians attend classes as a group for the majority of their subjects: however, some of them have been permitted to pursue their individual interests by participating in some of Nollâs elective classes such as modern literature, creative writing. Spanish, physics, and fine arts. The seminarians are a particularly active group of students. They can boast of having an intra-mural basketball team, five National Honor Society members, the Senior Class President, dramatic performers, and top students drawn from their ranks. Seminarians examine social problems of the United States with other social studies students in preparation for future involvement as priests. ADMINISTRATION Brother Paul, F.S.C.. Superintendent.
